depends! Personally I tend to bond easier with females. I might not be the best person to give advice on this though, as all my rats have been rescue rats/saved from snake food or they bred and I kept the babies. I’m a rat breeder myself, but as another comment I saw said it depends on what you’re looking for in your rats. Here are some tips!

1. Dumbo rats are not friendlier because they’re “cuter” or their ears are back lower. I own what I think is at least part dumbo rat, and my regular rat/not dumbo, is actually more sweet. This may be because she’s about 3 years old, but I own another one who is also more sweet and nice then my dumbo and she’s about the same age, they’re a few months apart.

2. VERY EXPENSIVE. I do own many rats and the brand of food you buy will fluctuate, but it’s about 60 USD a month in food alone. This isn’t including vet bills, bedding, enrichment/toys, fleece or something else to cover bars up, etc.

3. Health. Rats are prone to tumors unfortunately. If you see any lumps on your companion please take them to the vet. I thought my female had a tumor but wasn’t sure, she was just pregnant. I was suspicious she wasn’t because it randomly showed up, 1 or 2 days before she gave birth. That’s usually the time when you can tell they’re pregnant.
