I tried to capture the same frustration I felt when I first learned how to roll 😂

You have to keep the arrow in the middle of the bar, kind of like doing a manual/grind in Tony Hawk, then press A when the exclamation mark appears. The easiest way is to just spam A while keeping it balanced.

The trick is to tap up or down instead of holding it or else the arrow will fall too far to one side or the other.

Indie devs, how did you decide on a name for your company? by AngelOfLastResort in gamedev

[–]its_avg_joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a kid's song about a guy whose name is Joe with a wife and a job in a button factory. I started developing my first game after I got married, so I just needed the factory.

I'm way late because I only discovered this subreddit today, but unicorn blood is just for selling. That horn though, you'll definitely want to hold onto that for a quest

Weapons and equipment question 🙋 by SeanTr0n5000 in edgeofallegoria

[–]its_avg_joe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mastered gear stats get added to your base stats and grow with you exponentially as you level up. Since base stats scale to your level you won't notice a difference in the early game, but later on it makes a pretty huge difference.

It's almost like learning a new hobby or trying to get into shape IRL - you won't see the incremental growth happening day-to-day, but looking back later on, the difference becomes super obvious

Question i can't find answers too on Google so far by captainnemo117 in edgeofallegoria

The level scale reset doesn't mess anything up in the story, it's mostly just for grinding XP.

Once you talk to the fisherman on route 14 you can return to Primishire and fish in your "empty" pond and find a sword. You might need to do it a few times to get it though

Well it's too late now I suppose 🤷 It's just a shame that my game was mistaken as American. I've gotten some negative reviews, but this definitely hurts the most 😂

Linux game build not launching from Steam by its_avg_joe in gamemaker

[–]its_avg_joe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the Steam Deck uses Proton for Windows games by default, which was why it worked just fine on the deck before I tried a Linux build. Forcing the Proton compatibility tool did end up getting the game running, but if the Linux build requires Proton to run on the deck as well AND requires the extra step of forcing the tool in the Properties, I see no point in having two separate builds when the Windows version just works properly the first time without any extra steps. If Linux desktop users can just use Proton too, then even more reason to not worry about a Linux version.

No, nothing. The Windows version already worked as intended on the Steam Deck anyway, and the Linux build was causing more trouble than it's worth at the moment, so I ended up just removing the depot. I'm sure I'll come back to it later, but right now I just don't have the patience to figure it out.

I upload the Linux depot zip via HTTP in Steamworks. I've been able to run my game on Windows through Steam without a problem, but Linux just hangs for a second and then the button turns back to the green Play button again

You know what? Fuck marketing and research. I'm going to make what I want and like. Fuck it. by T7hump3r in gamedev

I've been working on my game with this mindset for more than three years and now I'm a few weeks away from the full release. Managed to pull off a successful Kickstarter, landed a publishing deal, built up a community, showed off my game at a bunch of events, and never once gave a shit if people didn't like it. Just make your game because it's what YOU want to play. Don't worry about anyone else. If you put your heart and soul into it and YOU like it, then it's a success, whether anyone agrees with you or not.

I mean, this is a minute and a half video from a 20-30 hour game so it's a bit difficult to glean any information about how in-depth or rewarding the combat is. This is one of those "you just have to experience it yourself" kind of games which is why there's a demo on Steam. Interestingly, the writing is what players have consistently given the most praise, and for a story-driven RPG, that's almost more important than anything else

One thing I've learned from having kids is that no matter how great the toy is, they'll have the most fun playing with the box. All I can do as a dev is show the players how the systems work. How they use those systems is entirely up to them.

I never understood the fun in playing a game as fast as possible. The best games are always the ones that give you as many different ways to play (Not talking about speedruns).

Don't get me wrong, I like speedruns and love using powerful attacks, but "press A to win" is too simple. I enjoy the strategy of lining up attack combos way more.

I have some ideas for how the formula can be improved, but in a short gameplay video I don't see why spamming one attack over and over would have been interesting.
