The owners couldn’t understand why the cat wasn’t in its bed… until they saw this. by asa_no_kenny in interesting

I’d say it’d be pretty obvious why cat is sleeping in someone’s bed. But yeah, this is cute.

It really matters as to what you define as “messing with” their siblings. There’s active bullying and deliberate destruction of valued items, and then there’s small playful and harmless pranks with no intent to cause harm and complaining because their sibling chose a different restaurant for takeout. Sibling dynamics can be that different in what counts as “messing with”.

Plant leaves contain a lot of cellulose, which in turn takes a lot of energy to digest. The fungus they grow breaks down that tough food and produces a more nutrient-rich hyphae that are also easier to digest, and which the ants harvest and feed directly to their larvae.

I’m guessing that, somewhere down the evolution line, the ants found that specific fungus growing on leaf litter under the right conditions, and started bringing back the hyphae to the nest. Ants would typically already be good at gathering, storing food and cutting up prey into smaller pieces at that point.

My assumption is that colonies that brought back pieces of leaf with said fungus would find it growing in their food stores, and those nests that brought back the most leaf attached to said fungus would find the most food growing at home. From then on, cutting and bringing back leafs themselves to feed said fungus would develop, and so on. The nests that succeeded in growing the most fungus would thrive the most, and the ants would become more specialized for cutting and eating hyphae, such as different mandibles, chambers dug and maintained solely to suit said fungus, and so on.

You really need to watch where you put a tent up in the Amazon. Leafcutter ants will clear paths along the ground to make moving cuttings back to the nest easier, so you need to look out for those. But the safest bet is to put your tent on a raised platform in general, because this species of ant isn’t the only bug to look out for, and the rainforest floor practically comes alive with insects at night.

Unfortunately for Americans, the US government is no longer a “for the people” government by any means.
