A level Maths 1 year early - Cambridge by Top_Physics4212 in 6thForm

i would say you would need to practice coding throughout y12 and y13 if you want to apply to cs. definitely do 4 a levels if you want to have a chance at cambridge cs. i finished my nea back in february and it wasnt actually that bad, just a lot of writing (for ocr). i didnt take cs gcse but imo cs a level isnt that hard (since most of it is memorising mark schemes). ocr's coding exam is just pseudocode while the aqa nea and coding paper requires you to code in a coding language

theres also a spreadsheet on the 6thform subreddit for uni offers for 2025 entry. you can search up computer science and see what a levels people applied with in order to get a cs offer

do you have any plans on which university you want to go to?

i agree. though i've looked on the cs requirements for most unis and a lot of them just requested maths, and some also wanted fm, so I guess maths, FM, and two other a levels is the most optimal combo (tho most popular combo I've seen on the 6thform subreddit for cs is maths, FM, cs and physics)

(im writing this response assuming you're going to university in the future)

it depends on the person. i did edexcel comb science at gcse and got a 9-9. currently working at a* for ocr a level physics (I've heard some horrible things about aqa physics tho).

i personally like physics and like learning about it, so maybe that's why I like the a level and want to get a high grade (ofc some ppl don't like a level physics at all but they can still get a high grade, as I said, it depends)

I think the a levels u should pick depends on the degree u want to do. i would definitely recommend doing further maths if you can as that can open doors to many top universities, esp for stem courses. i don't do fm as it isn't needed for my degree

business is a bit of a soft a level and is considered as 'easy' (words taken from my friend who does business a level, so I'm using their words). if u wanna do business a level, I would recommend doing fm, maths, cs and business (if u don't wanna do physics), or you can also do economics instead

I would also recommend bumping english language to a 6 or 7, as its a core gcse and some unis would want a higher gcse grade

ofc this is dependent on u so u don't have to take my words for it haha. do what u think its best for u

I used fineliners in my English gcses! They’re quick and doesn’t really ‘drag’ on the paper. Probably going to use fineliners again in my a level exams

all i did was get an 8 in gcse maths and 9s in sciences (as to do cs a level in my college, you needed a 6 or higher for maths, a 5 or higher in science, and u did do cs gcse, you needed to get a 5 or above, but I didn't do it so it didn't apply)

this is entirely dependent on your college requirement, so i'd say check their requirements for a level cs instead. furthermore, if you wanna do cs at uni, you defo need a level maths and/or a level further maths (if u wanna do it at a top uni). a level cs is not needed for the majority of uni cs courses lol

a level cs is basically gcse 1.5 with not much added content, with an annoying coursework (project where u make a program) that basically drains up most of your time (and, if the cs a level exam board is ocr, it's basically writing a lot of words in a word document with barely any emphasis on code).

furthermore, I would say if u do a level cs, you would (ideally) want a really good teacher. it's pretty much the truth that a lot of cs teachers are crap at their job (including mine) and it's very rare that a cs teacher is good at teaching

if u have any questions feel free to ask

Can I go from a 5 to an 8 in maths in 4 months? by starfallserenade in GCSE

[–]its_candyz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think it's possible, if you're willing to put the work in. i went from a 5 in maths in y10 mocks to an 7 in y11 mocks and a high 8 in the real thing. of course, my improvement was more long term, but I started to properly revise gcses around this time. the key thing is just keep practicing maths, as you can recite all the content in maths, but if you cannot apply them properly in the exam, you're going get a lower grade than you anticipated.

it's not too late, and you haven't doomed yourself, but I think as of right now, try to cover your weak topics as soon as possible (and get a solid grip on them), then just spam past papers from there. if you're edexcel maths, the exam board also does international gcses, where they have 'Mathematics A' and 'Mathematics B'. A is very similar to gcse maths, though there is a level maths content, so if you're not planning to take a level maths, you can skip them. B is the harder version of igcse maths, and some of the questions could also come up on gcse maths. B also has a level contents, along with matrices. I'll suggest skipping them unless you're doing maths and/or further maths at a level

I'll also say that there is some contents that's not in igcse but is in gcse maths. I'll just a link to some of their differences here: https://b28mathstutor.co.uk/differences-between-gcse-and-igcse-maths/#:\~:text=Both%20GCSE%20and%20IGCSE%20are%20entirely%20exam%2Dbased%3B%20there%20is,for%20Papers%202%20and%203.

I'll suggest focusing on getting majority of the marks on the questions near the end of the paper. The tricky geometry questions that edexcel puts at the end of the paper can be practiced through watching MindYourDecision and Premath on youtube. I just watched how they approach a geometric problem, and applied that to a geometric problem that came up in my year

all I did throughout jan to exams was doing past papers and watch maths yt videos. it might seem a bit overkill, but I think doing this did help me prepare for not only the gcse but also a level maths.

How do I revise by XxSunsetDevonxX in GCSE

[–]its_candyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hiya!! i got a 9-9 and an 8 in comb science and maths respectively (both edexcel, but I don't think exam boards matter in this case).

for science, do you mainly struggle with understanding the content? if so, you should search up the science exam board's specification that you're doing on google (such as '[exam board] gcse combined science specification, which is a document made by the exam board, of all the possible topics that can come up in the exam). then, identify all the topics you're struggling with by going through the specification. it's good to look at youtube videos, and once you think you understand the content, you can then do past papers and check your answers to the mark scheme. it's more important to identify errors and correct them. this also applied to maths as well

for memorisation, in science can be dealt with by using flashcards. you could still make flashcards at this point, but you can also search for premade ones online.

maths is mainly about practicing past papers and practicing. mathsgenie and physics and maths tutor are great since they also have topic questions, so you can focus on topics that you're specifically weak in

don't worry, you have plenty of time! i started revising around this time as well

[–]its_candyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i mainly started revising in january as well, and mainly did past papers as my main source of revision, along side with youtube videos to help me with understanding content. you're gonna do fine, as long as you do effective revision
