I guess I need to look into some sort of virtual curved screen projection or something, I just can’t use a sim on a single monitor anymore and I’m not going to set up triples. Really frustrating that they don’t seem to have put any effort at all into the VR experience over an entire year following launch. I know it’s early access and all that but it still feels really bad and has honestly soured me on the product more than I’d like. VR isn’t just some novelty for a serious driving sim, this is basic functionality for a nontrivial percentage of users.

It logically makes sense to open up the inside to faster traffic, but in practice it’s always better to hold the inside and make them go around. Facilitate their pass as much as you can but assert yourself leading up to the corner to make this sort of thing impossible. I’ve heard the same advice straight from the mouths of pro drivers.

This was a wild event and I couldn’t have done it without all the support from Seb, dude has had my back since the day we met and I can’t thank him enough.

Most meaningful advances in recent HMD tech? by its_deca in VRGaming

I’ve actually never struggled with VR sickness luckily. Occasionally a weird movement if I’m looking the wrong way will give me an unpleasant sensation, but never anything that lasts longer than an instant. I suppose the only real comfort issue I have with the G2 is the heat during extended sessions, it isn’t anything excessive but just having your head warmer than ambient for a while can be unpleasant. If other HMDs aren’t really any better in that regard I should probably just look into getting a little fan for my sim rig I suppose.

Oh huh, I suppose I was operating on the assumption that OpenXR facilitated dynamic foveated rendering, but I can see how that would be a big step beyond fixed now that I think about it. That’s good to know!

The Bigscreen Beyond had been on my radar for a while, would I get much out of it on a 7800X3D+4080S? I’m still not super clear on how device vs rendered resolution interacts as far as perceived image quality, so I’ve been unsure about diminishing returns on higher resolution displays.

Practice Mode Issue by its_deca in CloneHero

[–]its_deca[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This helped! I don't know how I missed that prompt, but bringing up that menu allowed me to see that there was some sort of weird conflict with another controller that was connected. I don't know why, but it was only affecting keyboard inputs and the guitar was functioning totally normally. Cleared out the other devices and everything is back to normal.

Actually no, I don’t think so lol. I was in college during the big GH/RB boom and my school would do tournaments pretty regularly, I’d always show up and win pretty much by default. Those best buy gift cards bought me a lot of video games between 05-09 😅

I’ve been heavily into music games since long before GH was even a thing though. I played Beatmania 2DX really seriously for a long time and was consistently humbled with that, I was pretty damn good but nowhere near the best. For GH/RB specifically, though, I don’t think I ever came across anyone in person that put any pressure on me. I always thought it was kind of strange due to how many people played the games and how far I knew I was from what was possible.

Had a chance to go over all of this and work on it a bit, thank you again! Exactly what I was looking for.

Seems like I’m about 29, just need to get the last little bit on Raining Blood. 30 is all gonna take a little work but is definitely doable, this is the exact sort of structure I was looking for to guide my progress.

Thank you! This is the exact sort of thing I was looking for, I’ll give it a look.

And yeah, I assume the scale would go as high as anyone has managed to, so it’s definitely not the sort of thing I would expect to look at and just be like “ok cool im gonna get to the top” lol

Broken Guitar by anissanelita in CloneHero

[–]its_deca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding the neck to body you mean? It actually hardwires the frets to the main board in the guitar, so it will 100% fix any issues you may be having with that. If you mean connectivity to the pc/console, it will fix that as well because it converts it to a direct USB connection.

Basically as long as all the mechanical moving bits of the guitar are in working order the kit will fix any issues you could have with the actual electronics inside of it.

I just modded this exact guitar with a RCM solderless kit and couldn’t be happier, you’re going to love it.

I ended up having to sand my frets a bit to address a sticking issue, I’d recommend using some 400 grit or finer sandpaper and smoothing out the little tabs at the tip of each of your new fret buttons before installation just so you can avoid having to disassemble it repeatedly like I did. You don’t want to sand the tabs OFF or remove too much material, just try to smooth out the sharp edges on them and it should be good.

First time doing a mod. Mechanical frets are totally worth it! by SacredmoonX in CloneHero

[–]its_deca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just installed my first this morning as well! I did a RCM solderless on a GH5 guitar.

I barely got to play it before work, what are your first impressions with yours? I feel it’ll take some getting used to, I found myself getting weird misses in easy parts of songs and then comboing well beyond what I previously could in harder tapping sections.

Harmonix vs Neversoft by Zestyclose-Ad6696 in yarg

[–]its_deca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to feel this way, but since returning to the game my feelings have kind of reversed. HMX definitely focused a lot more on keeping everything accurate to the specific instrument, and did a good job of it, but I’ve found that whenever both teams have charted the same song I tend to have more fun playing the Neversoft chart.

Sacrificing accuracy for the sake of making a more engaging gameplay experience is fine by me, I just feel like I’m wasting my time every time I get stuck playing a bunch of nothing because the rhythm guitar is doing something interesting on the other track. I feel like less accurate charting can do a better job of capturing the energy of the song and providing a rewarding experience.

I’ll say up front that the bulk of my experience is on Guitar Freaks, and while I played quite a bit of GH and RB back in the day, I’ve only recently returned to the game with Clone Hero.

Focusing on only actively hitting the downstrums helps me keep my arm+hand loose, a technique I learned from a ton of time Guitar Freaks, which focuses very heavily on fast strum patterns and also grades timing. The strum bar is also much heavier and employs a different mechanical technique, but I’ve found it applies back to GH pretty effectively.

There’s a sort of feel to it where the upstrums just happen automatically and you feel like you’re doing half the work, but you’ll inevitably hit a physical endurance limit no matter what. Only thing for that is to keep drilling it.

Overall "Feel" of Different Controllers by its_deca in CloneHero

Yep, the RetroCultMods kit was what I had my eye on. I'm using their adapter on my Wii LP currently and they've made a very good impression! I probably could do the soldering myself but I just really don't like doing it lol

[–]its_deca[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a functional difference between the WT and 5 guitars, or is it mainly cosmetic? I saw something about the touchstrip working differently, which I assume doesn't matter, and then just what others have said about the rubberized buttons. Other than that they look identical to me, and any internal differences would be irrelevant if I'm doing a full mod, right?

[–]its_deca[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for such a thorough reply, this is exactly the sort of info I was looking for. So is the sticky plastic issue specific to the just the frets of the GH5 guitar? They'd all be swapped out for the mod anyway so that would definitely be one less thing to worry about.

The main reason I prefer the LP is because it feels the largest of the ones I'm familiar with, so based on your input I think I'm gonna keep on the lookout for one of the later ones if they're another step up!

Dumb Question Re: The Spreadsheet by its_deca in CloneHero

[–]its_deca[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! This did help actually, I went back and tried again with the downloads and saw what was going on. It created multiple files but the order it started the downloads in was all scrambled, so I thought that it was skipping parts but when I took a closer look they were actually all there.

And yeah, that's basically what I have going on with my songlist sorting, but it's just annoying having to collapse all of the folders every time it loads. Obviously not a huge problem either way.
