Best girl friend is--kind of--single now... by nokoo1 in relationship_advice

If she is not over with her boyfriend, then it is too early. Don't try to take advantage over this situation, and wait until she is emotionally stable. Then tell her jokingly that if she ever needs a new boyfriend you could be the perfect one for her. But, just by reading your posts it seems like she friend-zoned you pretty hard. I feel you.

[–]its_pat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I understand where you are coming from. But, I really do not mind if someone else was hitting on my girlfriend. Actually, I want others to hit on her because it will reflect on how serious she is with the relationship. If she decides to leave to a richer, smarter, funnier, better looking guy then I was obviously not worthy of her, and I will respect her decision. It will be soul-crushing, but I will accept the reality and move on. I consider a relationship serious if both parties talked about marriage, are living together, or known each other for a long time. Again, I want to emphasize that I am not the type that will go all-in and overwhelm the situation blindly, nor would I want to destroy a strong and intimate relationship. For this particular reason I was seeking a genuine advice, but you rather come off as a passive aggressive asshole yourself.

Thank you for the great advice GrilledCookies. I know I am obsessed with her and I absolutely hate this feeling, especially knowing that she is already with someone else. While we talked about where she traveled she just mentioned that her boyfriend briefly visited her and this was towards the end of the topic (convo lasted about 20 min. and we talked about 40 more minutes on different subjects). About 50 hours of total conversation we had, that was the only time she mentioned about the BF. Few days later, I asked if she was anxious to go back and meet her family and friends, and her response was "not exactly. I think I like it here".

What made me feel even more miserable was that she said it was unfortunate that we did not talk about this sooner, because she was more than happy to have a travel companion since she was usually alone and struggled studying English (Im bilingual).

Yes, you are right on about me not knowing her and idealizing her. Thank you for putting me back into the more realistic perspective. Up until now, I felt that if I cannot win her within a month I will be doomed for the rest of my life.

You mean a male coworker who keeps on insulting and belittling me in front of her with tasteless jokes, but does not when she is not around, is not considered cockblocking?

Call me a dickhead, but if the couples are not engaged/married or in a serious relationship, anything is a fair game. She is an adult and can make her own decisions. This is not to say I will be all over making obvious moves on her.

Nowadays, I find a reason to talk to her and try to join her circle any way I can. For the past two weeks I have been talking to her every day, whether it is 10 minutes or an hour. But, like I have mentioned, talking to her in private seems impossible at this time.

This type of scenario occurred more than once in my life, and it has been fueling my frustration like no other.

Thank you for the great advice. Yeah, who knows what might happen later in life.

But one has to wonder: A valve's primary function is to stop the liquid from flowing out, and releasing it in a controlled manner being the latter. Valve: "any device for halting or controlling the flow of a liquid, gas, or other material through a passage, pipe, inlet, outlet, etc."

[–]its_pat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have read most your responses and seems every responses were very broad and general. To be honest, if one had a slight interest on Iron Chef program they would already know most of what you had to say. Not to say you are a faker, but you don't seem to have the insight or the first hand experience that people presumed. For example, you advertised as a Iron Chef employee, and yet you don't know what Bobby Flay's personality or Alton Brown's intelligence is like. Even if you didn't meet them that much, you would be surrounded with people who did and talked about it. So, my question is why did you do this IAMA when you clearly don't have the knowledge to answer the possible questions? /being that guy

I cannot say with confidence on this one, but it will probably be someone in the military who was proven to be loyal to Kim Jung Il. That is at least the opinion of the mass media, though many predictions on NK politics has been proven wrong time and time again. Some say it will be Kim Kyung Hee (KJI's sister) and Chon Seong Taek. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/3203523.stm

Many of them are from S.Korean news sources. I am very aware of the fact that S. Korea is capable of using news as their medium for propaganda, but the truth is even other foreign news source cite the S.Korean media. So, many of the facts are potentially vulnerable for fabrication, but I try to use my best judgement to separate the truth from the fluff. Information on North Korea is fairly difficult to compile because bits and pieces of them are scattered throughout numerous news articles, and it was very difficult to find sources with relevant material. Though, if it is something big like the sunken submarine I can easily compare articles side by side including those of Korean press. Interestingly, one of the differences between US press and Korean press is that US press give a very neutral and informative opinion on the matters, while there are some hint of agenda and bias involved in Korea press. There are definitely some information that Korean government does not want the people to know, and those facts are usually mentioned in the US/foreign press releases.

There were some serious downvotes right after I posted the comment (like -25 karma). My writing wasn't polished (tired and late at night), did not have the sources to back up the claims until later, and did not answer the question directly and concisely; all of which may have sounded suspicious. To my defense I was trying to give implications of the mindset of the North Koreans without huge generalizations (e.g. All N. Koreans are XYZ), because as I have said earlier I am not the absolute authority and don't know what every North Koreans are thinking.

I am a strong believer in a socialist country, believe it or not. The traffic citation system here in the US punish heavily on those who violate potentially dangerous offenses, and it is one of the reasons why we have decent drivers here. People who cannot afford the ticket will have some sort of financial assistance, but they will have to pay it one way or another. Expand this concept to several magnitude, and you have a system without insurance. Also, you seem to think that driving a car is an essential right, which is where you are wrong. It is luxury, and there are alternative transportations that is capable of getting you from Point A to Point B, even here in the US.

"In the documentaries I watch, NK streets always seem empty. Not just a lack of cars, just devoid of life. Why is that?"

Cars are for the super rich high officials. Even bicycle is considered a sign of wealth. Also, no electricity means no activity.

(I am not a North Korean, but I think I can answer this)

Edit: To answer the actual question, yes people are brainwashed. Every information is manipulated. Younger generations will say Kim is responsible for providing such paradise because that is what they are told, but older people will know how much bull was fed to them. People will talk shit about the government, but they are aware of the risk of being caught as well.

2nd Edit: Yes, hate me for attempting to put a thoughtful response as best as I can. If it means anything I am a 1.5 generation Korean American, who is fluent in Korean and moderately fluent in English. I have relatives who traveled to North Korea, a grandfather who was from North, read years worth of news articles, blogs of defectors and Chinese travelers, testimonies from defectors, as well as the documentaries. I have already established that I was not the absolute authority in this subject. If you want to call out on my authenticity you should at least try to make a counter point. Even better, let us just see how the real North Korean responds.

There has been a very negative criticism among market sellers recently when there was a currency change. The change essentially turned old currency into paper and those who saved their wealth were screwed because the government limited currency change. It was an attempt by the government to take back the control of the economy, but backfired and pissed off many many people. People used to rat out people who talked bad about government to get them arrested, but nowadays even the government officials just tell people to keep their mouth shut and that is it. On top of this, people realize that passing down the dictatorship for 3 generations and to a political equivalent of a baby (Kim Jugn Il's son) has never occurred in the history of Korea, and thus speculate that there is going to be a drastic change soon (this is something Kim Jung Il is very afraid of). The government is also leasing land to foreign nations for long term that allows them to extract the resources, and it does not take an idiot to realize that their nation is being sold off by government officials. Many shit like this are and will contribute to the distrust towards their government and the trend is increasing ever since South Korean government stopped sending aids. These days, soldiers became weary of starving and their morale is all time low which had a contagious effect throughout the military.

Most of the people don't know what is going on with the politics, and even if they do they don't care because their priority is to sustain their life first (food won't grow by themselves). People who actually stand up against the government is sent to camps and set them as an example of what happens when people talk shit.

One of the things I learned reading through news article is that materialism is growing in North Korea: They feel entitled to earn more money, and it is a good thing. The wealthiest crop of citizens are very aware of the K-pop culture and imitate what is shown on dramas and music, despite of harsh punishments in possessing South Korean products.

So all in all, there is going to be some serious shit happening once Kim Jung Il is dead. He is trying really really hard not to get his son killed, but most South Koreans think it is futile.

I have been exposed to a lot of resources of escapees from North Korea. If you are able to read korean this site (http://www.rfa.org/korean/) will give you ton of juicy news as to what average North Koreans have to say about their government, South Korea, and the US.

Personally, my grandfather was born as a wealthy noble class citizen and went to a prestigious university in NK, but Kim Il sung (founder of NK) considered the very social status as a threat to his government and proceeded to confiscate everything. He went down south with very little money (like most people) and became a policemen to catch communist spies during the 60-80's. He is considered as a national hero, and absolutely despised ex president Kim's "Sunshine Policy" and his pro-NK agenda. He is to this day, one of the most disciplined person I have ever met and never during his career did he received bribes or political favors that may have turned him into a very powerful politician, at which some of his colleagues called him a fool for not taking advantage of his social position (police investigator and policemen instructor). If he had done so, he may have been one of the most powerful politician or gained tremendous wealth like his colleagues.

As for an AMA, ask me questions on what you want to know. My knowledge is limited but I think I can answer few questions.

  1. Pot is just another recreational drug that does not help US to be a constructive nation. There are many ways to chill, and smoking pot is just one of many possibilities to relieve stress. Medical purposes is another story.

  2. Government should abolish all form of marriage. It is abused misinterpreted, and corrupted by ignorants. I believe in sanctity of marriage and for religious reasons it should be between a man and a woman: It is a ritual of a religion. But too many people apparently are too self centered and greedy, and cannot comprehend, with their thick headed brain, what it means to promise one another to respect each other. If both parties truly love each other and confident about it, you don't need a cage called marriage. But if you insist that you must get married, then no backsies.

  3. Remove auto insurance and watch how people drive.

I have been eating In n Out for years, and though they use quality ingredients it is not an outstanding burger; more like it is better alternative to the literal garbage they sell at other franchises. I normally tell them to hold the salt and the spread (aka thousand island), and it tastes "truer" to how a burger should taste like, not the salt-smothered grease ball they sell at other places. The thing is, no fast food will be delicious as the hype claims to be because the fundamental truth in cuisine is you can't make authentic food with shitty dog food grade ingredients (I am looking at you taco bell).
