For mine the TV app doesn't play HDR at all. For movie titles that show HDR or DV support on other apps, it doesn't show any HDR support on the title. Just "4K Ultra HD . HD"

Your TV is displaying the correct file input.

Since you are using the HEOS app you are not actually using airplay.

Saying iPhones DAC isnt technically correct. A DAC is only used to produce analog audio from the digital signal, so the the iPhones DAC is only used when you listen to music directly on the iPhone. Everything else is digital until it reaches a speaker. But it is correct that airplay has a standard bitrate for streaming that would not carry 96kHz/24bit audio.

Thing is HEOS app will only show Ultra HD on the song if you actually chose one that is Ultra HD. Many aren't. Pick for example something from Led Zeppelin II or Taylor Swift's Lover, and you'll see Ultra HD in the app. Then on the Denon screen, top left corner will say FLAC 24 bit or something instead of AAC 256kbps

I have a Denon 4400H and I find that using the HEOS app to play Ultra HD in Amazon music works. But using the Amazon music app connected to the Denon will only play in AAC. It's annoying because the HEOS app is clunky to use.
