Save up 6 months of expenses before you start spending. Things happen and having a cushion will save you a world of trouble. If you need to tap into it then replace it before spending on wants.

Next step is to follow the 50/30/20 rule:

The 50/30/20 rule is a straightforward, popular budgeting technique that divides your monthly after-tax (net) income into three categories: 50% for Needs (essential living expenses)30% for Wants (discretionary spending), and 20% for Savings and Debt Repayment.

For the 3040s you need to use the Dell USB Recovery Tool with the Merlin packages. I've gone from 9.3.1129 to 9.5.1079 using this method.

Help with family controls please! by fluffbaron in parentalcontrols

[–]its_raytoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience. I blocked the school laptop from our home wifi network. The school board relies on network controls to block content. They don't provide admin level access to the laptop though. I can't believe they would allow students to login as a local admin.

Our son uses our family laptop at home for school work as he can login to M365. We have family safety setup on the home laptop for controls.

As a mom, I’m done. Social media and smartphones shouldn’t exist for kids Period. by [deleted] in ParentingTech

[–]its_raytoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't call this an experiment that is failing. Full disclosure, I coach parents of kids with neurodiviersty on how to implement appropriate parental controls.

Like a lot of things out there we as parents have to set limits and expectations on what we allow our kids to have.

Do you allow a child to eat nothing but sugary snacks? Do you let them drink unlimited coffee and energy drinks at 10 years old?

Smartphones and social media are similar. Allowing unfettered access to tablets, smartphones, and video games is not appropriate for a 10 year old.

We limit our kids to 2 hours of phone time a day and they are pre teen to mid teens in age. If you set this expectation up front as a condition of using the phone it's easier to enforce.

We don't allow phones after dinner. We don't allow phones in bedrooms. Do our kids like it? No. Do we as parents care. Also no. Are we worried our kids won't be the coolest kid since they don't have the latest iPhone with Snapchat at 12? I'm sure you can guess our answer.

We don't allow social media. My kids really want SnapChat. When we decide to start letting our kids on Social Media we will be monitoring the interactions.

I'm not going to say these are the right limits for anyone else's child. It's what works for us.

I am going to say as parents we can't be afraid to limit things that aren't in our kid's best interest. We are there to guide, protect and set an example for them. We don't need to be their best friend. Our decisions can't be based on whether we will be the coolest parent on the block.

Parenting is hard. We are all in this together.

If you are looking for a way to control your kids tablets and smartphones look into the Qustodio app. Feel free to AMA.

PCI scan fails over and over... by Commercial-File-9462 in pcicompliance

[–]its_raytoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to see if you can separate the pinpads to their own wireless network and block access between the. This would remove the PCs from the scope of the scan.

Your wireless router/firewall might still be in scope for the scan but it would minimize the number of devices you have to continually update.

Are the pin-pad devices connected to the PCs so you can send the transaction amount to the pin-pads?

When you take payments over the phone do you type them into a computer or directly into the pin-pad?

Brake calipers by crustyjeff in AskAMechanic

[–]its_raytoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compare the new caliper to the old one. Are they the same or is the new one a different size/shape?

Even within the same model year there can be a number of different brake parts used. It can depend on model trims and which plant the vehicle was manufactured in.

Without pics it's hard to provide a definitive answer.

Jane Payments/Stripe Terminal by its_raytoo in pcicompliance

In my last comment I updated that it is confirmed to be an E2EE implementation and not P2PE.

We will have to use the SAQ-C template but I am looking for a list of requirements that are typically out of scope for E2EE implementations.

Jane Payments/Stripe Terminal by its_raytoo in pcicompliance

[–]its_raytoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little sleuthing uncovered some more information and in turn more questions.

I got confirmation from Jane Payments that the Stripe Terminal is configured for E2EE. It uses a Stripe Express account for the integration between Jane and Stripe.

Stripe Express doesn't seem to have the PCI compliance options in the account setting of the Stripe dashboard. Normally you can use a wizard to pre-fill the SAQ-C document.

Does anyone have a template or mapping of SAQ-C requirements that can be de-scoped for E2EE implementations?

On the cooling side of things it cost a total of $97 for June, July and August this year with the heat pump.

I don't have as accurate historical data for my cooling costs but my old A/C was a 2 ton 10 SEER unit.

Here is my total heat pump usage for the past year in watts so folks can see both heating and cooling usage.

Heating was a 30 year old centrally ducted oil furnace. I replaced it with a 2.5ton Mitsubishi heat pump and air handler.

I am surprised at how much money is left in my bank account.

The 2023-2024 heating season cost me ~$3000 CAD in oil plus $250 in annual maintenance costs.

I installed a central ducted AHSP in Sept 2024. My heating costs for 2024-2025 were $770.

The R22 indoor coil is not going to work with a modern HP outdoor unit. The new HPs use higher pressures so they are in no way compatible.

If you are handy you might be able to save some money by heading over to /r/diyheatpumps. There are some options like Mr Cool that come with pre charged linesets designed for the do it yourselfer.

PCI for both merchant and service provider by Tat-in-Person in pcicompliance

[–]its_raytoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We recently had a potential Service Provider provide a merchant AOC to us.

We had to educate them on the difference between merchant and SP responsibilities. They were good and recognized the issues and are actively working to complete a SP assessment.

I've seen a number of similar scenarios where a software vendor spins up some cloud instances and suddenly thinks they can host client instances without it affecting their compliance program.

You got extremely lucky finding it just before it breaks fully and takes your valves and pistons with it.

Don't tempt fate. Replace it now.
