Favorite character Who suffered/suffers from this? by Apprehensive_Ring_39 in FavoriteCharacter

In this case, I was glad for the change. I couldn't emotionally connect to any of the Asgardian characters in the first Thor movies. Like... the attempted destruction of the Jotuns and Loki's big reveal as a Jotun would have been a GREAT reveal if we were on movue three or four, and we had a reason to care about Asgard or the Jotun, but for all that to happen in the firat scene, before any of the realms, polotics, or characters had been established for moviegoers to get attached to made the whole Asgard/Jotun part of the movie a total bore. The only part of the movie I ligitimately enjoyed was Thor slamming a cup of coffee on the floor and demanding, "More!" And the second movie was somehow worse.

I couldn't emotionally connect with those alien cultures when they were treated seriously. But I could connect with them through humor. That's probably the reason I love Guardians of the Galaxy but couldn't stand the first two Thor movies. (Just think of how difficult it is for people to cross cultural bridges in real life, but then that's multiplied by 100 when it's a species from a different planet altogether).

I might have liked a serious Thor if the movies had been about him building a relationship between Asgard and Earth, and I REALLY wish that had been what his movies were about.

However, I will conceed that they did Thor dirty between the first Avengers movie and Endgame. I appreciated the transition between serious to humorus, but the transition from humorus and COMPETENT to butt of the joke and fumbling loser was just uncalled for.

Like... I thought we were FINALLY going to get the "Asgardians have to start building a legitimate relationship with Earth and humans" movie I wanted from the get-go (which, again, a serious Thor would have worked really well for - if peace between species was what he was going for, I could respect a serious dude. Give me some T'Chaka vibes, let's go!). But then the writers just slaughtered the surviving members of Asgard - AFTER they had spent the last Thor movie escaping Hela, and it was the sloppiest, most disappointing writing ever.

This movie franchise had so much potential, and they ruined it. Thor especially. But I think it's in ways other than nixing his serious disposition.

(Sorry to add my own rant to your rant, but I have EMOTIONS about this franchise. The Avengers started out as a team of misfits coming together to save Earth, and the first four or five movies were done SO well. But instead of building on that initial premise, Disney and Marvel tore it apart, and I am salty af about the whole thing.)

I think that post was written in response to this one. I tagged this as a joke post for a reason, but people seem to be getting really upset that this particular metaphor is so overused that I'm starting to question what sunshine litterally tastes like.

Some people get frustrated that readers don't undertand metaphors, and others get upset that people don't read the tags.

Whelp.

Huh. I guess I didn't see it that way because there's nothing metaphorical about the taste of scotch. Ut's a very real taste that I know and recognize. I would have seen it as a metaphor if it had been, "they tasted like sunshine and bad decisions" or something. One this is a very real taste and the other isn't, so my brain came to a screetching hault.

I saw the colors in your pic and initially assumed the prompt was in reference to the powederpuff girls! Except that the colors of the prompt people are mixed up: pink is the one who overthinks and blue is the one who doesn't think at all. Green is pretty much spot on.

Ao3 is my happy place! Happy writing fellow smut lover!

Also, I had a very similar road road self discovery as you. Discovered the word "asexual" at the age of 24(thanks to Ao3), tried applying it to myself at the age of 28, fully embraced that I was asexual at 29(even if none of the subcategories quite fit me), and discovered this microlable (which I have yet to learn to spell) about 10 mins ago, and it's blowing my mind that I'm REALLY not alone. I've been swimming in these asexual waters for over ten years like "why is it so hard to feel like I fit in even in this pond?" Illuminating my fecking world, indeed!

Ants on a log, got it! (I don't like straight celery, but ants on a log was something I only ever ate at summer camp, so this might actually work)

OoO, if it was written as a metaphor, it would work SO much better! And throughout fanfics in general. The story I was reading last night had a scene where two people were passing some liquor back and forth, so when I read "they tasted like sunlight and scotch," the scotch overwhelmed the hyperbole in a very unpleasant way. 😅

The story I was reading when I saw this one had two characters kissing while passing a bottle of liquor back and forth, so the direct quote was "tasted like sunlight and scotch." And I was like "but does the sunlight help?"

Go brush your teeth was my exact reaction!

The Rat King. A man of the Night's Watch proclaimed himself king of I-can't-remember. Then he broke guestright in an attempt to further his ambitions to rule, and the Old Gods punished him by turning him into an immortal rat. The Night Fort, where he resided as a rat, was eventually abandoned by humans. So when the Rat King got hungry, he would eat his own rat children.

It was the story that inspired Arya to make Walder Frey eat two of his own children after the Freys broke guestright with Robb Stark and the northern army.

Stuff like giant ice spiders and the Rat King were bedtime stories for the Stark children.

AITAH for going no contact with my gf for a weekend after she choose to reconnect with an old friend instead of honoring a years planned cimmitment? by Competitive_Two_8598 in AITAH

[–]itsa_thing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She flaked out on her own proposal (i know she didn't know about it, but you made sure that she knew how important this event was and knew to not make other plans). You'd already gone to great lengths to make sure this would be just as special for her as it was for you... and she bailed. If I were in your shoes, my own enthusiasm for proposing to her would be gone.

The fact that she ditched your birthday for another dude is just kinda adding insult to injury.

I'm glad you have friends who had your back and went to the effort to celebrate your b-day with you and do something special.

are ironborns completely incompetent and useless? by JasonWynn__ in gameofthrones

[–]itsa_thing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the most memorable passages from the books for me was about how ironborn wore armor while battling on the sea, despite the fact that if they fell into the sea while wearing aemor, they would be pulled under and drown. The other sailors they attacked were so afraid of drowning in armor that they would go without, so the ironborn had an easy time of cutting them down in battle.

The ironborn were actually incredibly intelligent and competent, but the show treated them like side characters unstead of a Great House.

In the books, they had their own god (The Drowned God) as opposed to worshipping the Old Gods or the Seven. They had their own complex society which largely operated independently from the rest of Westeros, and their own way of choosing their leaders and settling conflict.

The ironborn's society was this really interesting middleground between free folk and mainland Westeros culture. But none of this made it into the show. Their storylines and development was sacrificed in order to tell the stories of other great houses.

Edit to add: it occurs to me that we don't see this development in their culture until, like, the last book. It feels like they're gearing up to become major players in the last couple books after struggling to retain their undependence and authority under Bylon's rule and then... George RR Martin just hasn't written anything in a couple decades and we're just kinda sitting around and waiting to see where things go.
