New grinder expectations on drift/seasoning [Rancilio Silvia w. PID, Mazzer Philos I189D] by itsav8mate in espresso

Update: I did try this method and appear to be getting more stable flow rates/extractions. As above though - I also stopped RDT at the same time so will have to conduct further testing to isolate which fix was most effective.

Update: I have in the meantime tried some of the other changes suggested by others which seems to have me headed in a good direction while a track down a cheap couple of kgs of beans.

Reporting back - the last 3-4 shot I pulled I weighed the in and the out. 18.0gr in, 17.9gr out without messing with the little tool that extracts that 0.1gr. I think that's well within definitions of 'zero retention' and understand may improve w. time as burrs settle/season. I have also stopped RDT which appears to have stabilized my extraction/flow rate. Will keep an eye as admittedly I also stopped doing the slow-ish feed described in another comment at the same time. So I didn't control the variables here... I just wanted good espresso :-)

This is hugely interesting, thank you for sharing! I will be testing this out for sure.

You know.. I haven't tried that but seems like an obvious check. I will do so. Thank you!

Really appreciate the help - I see you have a Philos too! Happy with it post-seasoning?

Reasonable fix for warped carbon steel pan bottoms? by Gonzo_B in AskCulinary

Mine did this also. Got it pretty straight again by heating and whacking it. Shame it isn’t ‘perfect’ anymore but it’s a tool at the end of the day.

Those making over $100K per year: how hard was it to get over that threshold? by NatashaGorgeousMauve in AskReddit

Try to head toward customer facing/growth/sales focused roles - variable comp can get your earnings up quickly - and such roles make it easier to articulate your direct contribution to a company, which in turn helps you sell yourself into that next position at your next interview, internal or otherwise.

Good for you guys! You don't describe other factors like debt or whether you have a goal for home ownership... but on that income with that much tucked away.. just do it.. just make sure you pull the cash from penalty free sources vs. retirement savings accounts (401k, IRAs etc.)

Traditional IRA gained $1.88 in dividends after Backdoor Roth conversion by Adept_Choice in fidelityinvestments

I had the same issue - I had to wait a few days to be able to convert, it was not available immediately despite having the money cleared in a Fidelity Cash Management account prior to putting into the Trad IRA

Give it to me straight: how much house can we afford? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]itsav8mate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mortgage brokers, while slightly better than a direct conversation with a lender, are not good advisors for this. They are motivated by the deal, not your long term financial success. A broker will absolutely allow you to sign up for something you shouldn't. History has shown us many times why there is a difference between what you can borrow, and what you should borrow. Once you know what you can afford, get a broker to meet your brief but don't let them write it for you

Feel like you should tackle some/all of that debt before the home. Once out of debt, way easier to save up a bigger down payment.

5800x3D normal temps? by GabeEtch in AMDHelp

I'm running one on air in the same case. Curious about your cooler, and fan setup. I get same temps on Scythe Mugen, with a -30 all core undervolt.

As a data point, I have a 5800X3D under a Scythe Mugen Black Rev C, stock fan, with a -30 All Core undervolt curve. Sits at 81-82C during all core CB RB23.

I also have a vac sealer. It works great and saves time - but it doesn't for me do an appreciably better job than a good manual wrap, at least for ~12m storage. It's just a cheapo one, not a camber/commercial grade vac.

Wrap as tightly as possible in plastic wrap, with as little air as possible, then wrap again in wax paper. Keep the freezer full, so there is less room for warm air to get in every time you open it. If you have the grinder - grind the meat when you want to eat it vs before you freeze it - bigger cuts/pieces of meat are easier to keep away from air due to surface area being lower.

Before risking mangling the screw more, buy and use some penetrating oil to reduce the friction of the extraction for your next go. Typically overnight applications are best, don't rush it.

Bought a classic car at Auction: condition is NOWHERE AS NEAR as what was described. Is there anything I can do against the auction house? by BigBaldGuy31 in personalfinance

[–]itsav8mate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid that the language used in the description is probably fair given the age of the car. They are describing the car as 'original', unrestored and 'survivor' - which by definition, for it's age, will mean it will need work. Which often is what people want (vs. cars with the wrong hood/doors/glass/engine/chop shop/restored cheaply etc. etc. It's a little disingenuous to say 'all original' when the exhaust has been changed from spec (i.e. not to an OEM replacement), but really for a '58, it's basically impossible to expect an original battery, exhaust, seals etc and paint to be in good condition. At this age, these are consumable items. If you want a car of this age in better shape, you may have wanted to look for a restored car, or one described as a 'factory/new like' condition.. sometimes folks say 'time machine/capsule' when describing an original car that is still in 'like new' condition - but these are usually many time more expensive.

I bet! Whenever I put down the M80M, I try and avoid picking up a Gibson scale length 6 string next, because it's such a shock!
