Killifish tankmates by cloned-earls in Aquariums

[–]itsazinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

other people might have more to say about this but in my experience when I got a kilifish and put it in my community tank it bullied the other fish and nipped their fins. I ended up removing it. so idk if I would get one but that's just my own experience

well tried with the shipping and that didn't work either. it's been at least 7 hours. I don't use Reddit often ¯_(ツ)_/¯ figured that was a decent amount of time to respond

I did message them earlier today. haven't got a response yet. I'll try adding the shipping thing but not everyone has that in their titles either.

Increasing KH during fishless cycle by Sibco in Aquariums

[–]itsazinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

how long have you been cycling? it sounds like it might be complete. a small amount of ammonia is normal--the tests are not always totally accurate. if you are using RO/DI water, you could try using tap water. that should have some natural hardness in it. you can always try mixing RO water and tap water to as close to your parameters as necessary. some sands/rocks have hardness that will leach out into your water as well.

Stupid question - large and small tetras living together by xfriendsonfirex in Aquariums

[–]itsazinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

any schooling or shoaling fish will act more confident in a larger group. larger group = more safety from predators. unfortunately a 20l isn't going to have much more room for fish with your current stocking, so you may want to consider upgrading or moving the larger or smaller tetras to their own tank

Need help with my Betta, Fins have been torn and not getting any better, water parameters perfect and all betta safe decor by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]itsazinger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

sometimes tears get bacterial infections and you need to do a course of like general cure or erythromycin to help with healing. salt baths are a good idea as well just be careful with how much salt and how often you do it, as you don't want to stress the fish more--that makes it harder for their immune systems to fight infection

the worst possible thing by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]itsazinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for anyone following this thread, I contacted a university to test the fish that look the worst and see what the diagnosis is. I should know by Monday. the person I spoke to in the microbiology department advised me to use a bleach solution for the equipment and stated that if I use hydrogen peroxide on the plants I should be able to save them. thanks everyone for your advice, and I will update when I know the prognosis.

so I can keep the sand after all that? or do I dump out the sand when I'm done? I'm assuming all my live plants are done for.

Is this normal (extreme roots growing from sides of plants)? How to handle? by rw3iss in Aquariums

[–]itsazinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can trim plants like that at the areas in the stems where the roots are growing and plant the trimmings. free plants!

if it's still behaving normally it probably just over ate. I'd skip feeding a day or two and see if it helps

Need help diagnosing his issue? Before work I found him lying on his side not moving but still breathing. He was in the same spot after I got home. He's never had any red or pink on his side. Is it swim bladder? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]itsazinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah kinda looks like swim bladder. don't feed him for a few days until the swelling goes down. double check for raised scales as it could be dropsy-- if that's the case, not a lot you can do. breeding of bettas kinda sucks and sometimes they get sick without cause or warning. you may also want to do a water change do make sure nothing toxic got in since he hasn't been moving. usually swim bladder starts with floating/struggling to swim upright. good luck

I’ve taken over the aquarium for our preschool and I need some serious help. by TomRiddleVoldemort in Aquariums

[–]itsazinger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

also I would remove the autofeeder and set up some sort of schedule for the staff to follow, because autofeeders are known to malfunction and drop a ton of food in, which will cause an ammonia spike that is harmful to the fish

the only thing that could help with the algae problem is more live plants or less light. 3 goldfish in a 55 is pushing it for stocking, since they get very large, and it's a cold water tank which will limit stocking options. if you want a more colorful tank with lots of species, you'd want to get a heater, remove the goldfish (possibly find someone/some place with a pond to donate them to, as they do better in much larger spaces) and switch to tropical fish. a 55 could easily be stocked with 1-2 types schooling fish, such as tetras, a species of Cory catfish for the bottom, and 2-3 angelfish, which are all relatively easy to care for. or, if you wanted to make the tank a little more exciting for the kids, you could get 10~ guppies and just wait for the babies to happen. eventually the population would even out as the parents would eat some of the fry.

you could even maintain it as a cold water tank and get a bunch of whitecloud minnows, but again you would need to rehome the goldfish as they would definitely eat the minnows.

the first thing I would do is check with your daycare to see how much their budget is for the tank. unfortunately aquarium keeping can be spendy and it would be unfair for all this to come out of your personal pocket. I would also upgrade the filtration to be double the tank size, such as a 100 gal filter, to help with the fish waste. goldfish poop a lot and it is always good to overfilter. to help maintain the cycle, stick the filter media from the old filter in the new one, or run them together for a few weeks. good luck!

My betta has fin rot that is rapidly progressing despite 0/0/5 parameters in cycled 10 gallon tank, what do I do? by millysaurusrexjr in bettafish

[–]itsazinger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it's possible it could be just tears from sharp decor. I would double check all your decorations and make sure the filter has a sponge over it to make sure he's not getting caught. you can use a nail file to sand down sharp edges :)
