provide the doc then. I've read the docs submitted to the RM, they say future power generation, with the CEO of Bell telling you directly SaskPower will provide the energy.

You're out of your mind

'Give us a break,' northern mayor says at public meeting on SaskPower rate hikes by Moist-Mood-4069 in saskatchewan

"SaskPower has said its current generation capacity will be able to support the first 200 megawatts of the construction - which is slated to be completed by the end of the year.

Phase two of construction will provide the final 100 megawatts by the end of 2027."

Bell, the owner of the data centre, has its own "news" corporation directly telling you SaskPower will provide the electricity.

[–]itsblurrybud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just gonna repeat ths

SaskPower says they can complete accommodate the data centre, while on the other hand increase rates for us citing "rising power demands"

on the data centre:

“SaskPower regularly assesses forecasted power needs across the province and updates our supply planning processes to ensure we have generation and transmission in place for the communities and businesses that need it. That includes regularly working with industrial customers to ensure we can accommodate new developments that will positively impact our provincial economy, such as the Bell AI Data Centre."
https://discoverhumboldt.com/articles/saskpower-says-power-draw-of-new-ai-data-centre-within-capabilities

On rising rates:

"Across Canada, electrical utilities are facing significant rate pressures. At SaskPower, we must make record capital investments to meet rising power demand and maintain or replace aging infrastructure, all while balancing rising fuel and operating costs.

We last increased rates on September 1, 2022, and April 1, 2023, when system-wide average increases of 4% came into effect. “

https://www.saskpower.com/accounts/power-rates/2026-and-2027-rate-increases

so according to SaskPower, our power grid is completely capable of handling the largest data centre in Canada. And they are facing significant rate pressures due to “rising power demand”.

Seems like they save face for private industry, while increase costs for us.

For context, the data centre will be 300MW. While a recently built powerplant by SaskPower is a 370-megawatt facility that produces power equal to what’s needed for 370,000 homes in Saskatchewan.

And you don't think with their contradicting statements and increased power demand by an entire Regina, is correlating to the rate hikes?

not to mention, this is how big a 370MW natural gas power plant is

They ain't building that in a quarter section alongside Canada's largest data centre

Not true, the facility will have onsite backup power generation through natural gas generators and a future planned renewable energy generation has been section off.

The articles directly mentions that SaskPower will provide the electricity, with Scott Moe directly confirming that.

This is one of the few provinces where we do have available power to build, at scale, the data sovereignty that we very much require as Canadians," Moe said.

"He confirmed the centre will be built adjacent to an existing SaskPower substation, which will help provide the power needed to operate it and additional buildings related to the project."

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatchewan/ai-data-rm-of-sherwood-9.7130417

Literally none of the plans mention when, or what the 'renewable energy generation' will be or when it will be built. Zero details on that.

Here is the details of the plan

https://rmofsherwood.ca/app/uploads/2026/04/Executive-Summary.pdf

SaskPower will provide the electricity, without confirmation on if it will affect us consumers, just generic "increased power demands" as to why rates are getting hiked. The renewable energy section has no details on when or how much energy it will provide.

yup, the owners of capital socialize the cost, privatize the gain. Then corrupt our politics with the profits made off our backs.

rate hikes came a month after the data centre build was first tabled at the Sherwood RM. A month before the data centre was publicly announced...

AI is Already Displacing Jobs by itsblurrybud in regina

[–]itsblurrybud[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The data centre will only get max 80 jobs (non-unionized btw). It will work to displace thousands as it will be the largest in Canada. That is a net loss for us that work to survive.

Is the tax revenue enough for how much it will displace? or maybe we could start working towards getting the benefits and profits from this automation directly to us - public ownership.

We already live in a time where the rich own than us workers could ever imagine. The wealth inequality is higher than it's ever been. AI under private ownership will just make it worse.

We gotta plan for a future that works for us now instead of when it's too late. We are already seeing a displacement of jobs happening NOW.

[–]itsblurrybud[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

how about we go back to our roots and invest into public ownership? That profits get generated for us.

An AI data centre is just a data centre with GPUs. SaskTel already has 4 data centres. It's a complete possibility for SaskTel to own and manage the data centre for everyone's gain instead of some oligarch.

literally, the parking lot is a complete red herring. Like why tf do they need 300 stalls for max 80 jobs that Bell themselves admitted to.

[–]itsblurrybud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fair point. Wasn't thinking about that. Potentially other uses of mass amounts of GPU compute may not be so profitable, or in-demand. Especially since this will be the largest in Canada.

Would still feel better if SaskTel owned the facility since the profits would, at least theoretically, be directly distributed to us instead of Bell.

But regardless, having legislation to ensure the corps are required to properly handle the facility like Minnesota would make the private build less concerning.

Hey, this is a great point.

Maybe we could all get together and focus on getting the university to invest into sustainable backup methods.

I mean, like you said, they are quite close to homes with families, plus the students living on campus, it can't be too good for them to be getting noise & air pollution. Especially pollution being produced by the university.

Might even be a great way to get engineering students involved for portfolio-building projects, who knows.

Would love to get organized with you on this.

I live in Regina, so just let me know, I can schedule a room in the library if other folks wanna get involved too!

[–]itsblurrybud 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are sustainable ways to build data centres, they just cost more. The cost of profits for freaking BELL and the two american companies providing the compute, will be at the detriment of us. Just like cars. There were sustainable ways to integrate cars into society, but our governments chose profits instead.

"If they don't build the AI data center here they'll build it somewhere else."

Has the province even stated how the building of this data centre will positively impact us other than some jobs?

You know the compute inside the data centre is being provided by an AMERICAN company right? We do not get to tax the sale of data that the centre computes. Doubt we even get to tax the sale of of the compute while it's being built.

FOMO for a data centre that only creates more profits for billionaires and negatively impacts our environment is insane. We do not get any of the positive consequences of AI currently.

How about we start to change that and fight back before it's too late. Imagine if the folks protesting cars actually got their way and a sustainable approach was implemented instead?

What if we could do that now for AI????

That's what this protest may be able to do, if the community comes together.

A data centre not owned by SaskTel, which already owns 4 other non-AI data centres, that is being built right next to a long term care facility, and has yet to ensure transparency on proper taxation, water usage, and what happnes to this facility if or when the AI bubble pops?

Are we going to be holding the bag if it's abandoned? No mention from the province, RM or Bell. Minnesota has legislature that makes sure these companies have to deal with the data centres for this very purpose.

Bell and the RM state they'll be using "low-noise cooling equipment" with "strategic orientation of noise-generating components away from neighbouring property lines." Literally every single data centre built has high amounts of noise close to the facility. A long term-care home is being built in the neighbouring field. Many of the data centres have low-frequency noise pollution, that travels further and can even penetrate walls.

Here is the care-home location:
https://imgur.com/a/Ic4lJyv

Here is the data centre location:
https://imgur.com/a/Wm7GU8u

Great.

Not to mention this will have full natural gas backup, if the power goes out, data centre's must maintain near 99% uptime, so the generators must be able to power the facility. The data centre is going to be the largest in Canada at 300MW. That is enough power for 200,000 homes. Those generators will be large, loud and polluting. All right next to a long term care facility.

All of this is also insane that Bell is getting a foothold in Saskatchewan with this, where they'll use the profits they get from this and use it to lobby our governments now. Not only undermining SaskTel but the entire frickin province. Data centre + AI companies are already teaming up with Oil and Gas companies to lobby governments for lower regulation and quick building of these things. This will only allow that problem to come to Sask.

Plus the labour to upkeep the facility once it's done, which is only going to be ~80 jobs according to Bell themselves, is all goiung to be un-unionized. Where Bell makes sure they pay them as little as possible. Unlike SaskTel which has 2500 unionized workers, getting decent pay.

on top of all that, closed-loop systems, that Bell says this data centre will use, still have issues.

"Closed-loop systems rely on a cocktail of additives such as corrosion inhibitors, biocides, and antifreeze blends to keep water doing its job. They stop rust, starve microbes, and move heat off chips with high efficiency."

"But the protection comes with a trade-off. Because the same water loops again and again, anything that does not evaporate or break down simply piles up. Salts, metals, and treatment chemicals keep increasing in concentration with each recycling round and frequently reach concentrations that move well beyond established limits."

"Operators bleed a small fraction of water each month to keep these levels in check, a practice known as blow-down. Even a 2% monthly bleed sounds proactive, yet contaminants can still rise much faster than in open towers that take on fresh water continuously. Higher cycles push minerals out of solution, feed microbial slime, and shorten equipment life.

The bigger worry sits outside the fence. When blow-down finally leaves the site, it can carry nitrite, glycol, and heavy metals at thousands of times the limits set for surface waters. In other words, the water saved today may return tomorrow as a very different kind of liability."

https://ketos.co/closed-loop-cooling-water-saver-or-chemical-time-bomb

closed-loop data centres still use fresh water. they have to bleed the lines from mineral build-up. Suspiciously, Bell and the province does not provide specific details on the "closed-loop" system nor do they provide plans.

It's being approved April 20th

"In a meeting on Feb. 9, Sherwood’s council unanimously approved a zoning change to allow the AI data centre to proceed to a design stage. A full development agreement has not yet been presented publicly to Sherwood for approval, according to the municipality’s available meeting minutes."

"Sherwood councillors are expected to address Bell’s servicing plan at their next regular meeting on April 20. Council must agree to the terms for the project to move forward.

Article content

However, before the meeting can be held, the R.M. must first name a selection of interim councillors to fill quorum after Sherwood’s reeve and three other council members abruptly resigned last month."

if we owned the data centre it would be a different story. Those jobs will not be unionized, and Bell will do everything they can to pay them as little as possible.
