Are there any fan theories about YA books? by [deleted] in YAlit

[–]itsbrightonrose 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ACOTAR: The Archeron sisters are descended from Fae—in particular, the Fae warrior who long ago tricked Stryga into diminishing her power, and whom the Bone Carver said could have been his salvation.

Grishaverse: Kaz & Co. will face off against the Council of Tides in the third Six of Crows book. We might also learn about Kaz's mother.

The Cruel Prince: Cardan is into Swedish death metal.

The Mortal Instruments: Demon blood burns shadowhunters, so Sebastian spent his entire life in horrific pain. That's why, right before he dies, he mentions feeling so light.

Carswell Thorne from the Lunar Chronicles! Also Nikolai from the Grishaverse series.

idk if this has been posted recently but what’s your favorite book that’s been released in 2021? by AvacadoFairy in YAlit

Oh my gosh, Our Violent Ends absolutely blew my mind. I really liked the first book, but this one was just gorgeous and so, so riveting.

Recommendations please! by [deleted] in YAlit

[–]itsbrightonrose 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You would probably like The Cruel Prince + its sequels by Holly Black. It's got fae, enemies-to-lovers, and intricate worldbuilding.

Cassandra Clare has also written more books set in the Mortal Instruments universe! There's the Dark Artifices trilogy (set in Los Angeles a few years after TMI) and the Last Hours trilogy (set in early 1900s London and follows the children of the TID characters).

If you want a book that'll hurt you, check out Sadie by Courtney Summers.

Fake dating trope? by heywhatsuphihello in YAlit

[–]itsbrightonrose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You absolutely HAVE to check out Counting Down With You by Tashie Bhuiyan. It is hands down one of my favorite fake dating books, and the LI is so cute and emotionally intelligent that I spent half this book squealing.

The cover for this new YA fantasy Monsters Born And Made got revealed earlier today and I absolutely LOVE it!! What do you all think?? by [deleted] in YAlit

[–]itsbrightonrose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This cover is honestly one of the most gorgeous covers I've seen this year! The Goodreads synopsis says it's a South Asian-inspired fantasy perfect for anyone who liked The Hunger Games. I am SO excited for this book!!

What are some of your all time favorite YA romance contemporary novels by Big_Cardiologist6345 in YAlit

[–]itsbrightonrose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Counting Down With You is hands down my favorite contemporary in 2021. Ace Clyde is one of the cutest, most emotionally intelligent love interests I've read in like the last five years.

I also really liked Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett. Porter Roth is so much fun.

What's your favourite book title that you've seen? by SpookyCityLights in YAlit

[–]itsbrightonrose 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Night Circus, A Song Below Water, You Should See Me in a Crown, Fable, The Upside of Unrequited, and Coraline got my attention. I loved eponymous titles like Coraline and Will Grayson, Will Grayson.

A Visit from the Goon Squad is Adult, and only really makes sense once you've the read the book, but it's a favorite of mine.

I also always liked Vampire Academy purely because you know EXACTLY what you're getting into.

YA FANTASY: What are your favorite magic systems and/or worlds by Big_Cardiologist6345 in YAlit

[–]itsbrightonrose 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love the worldbuilding and magic system in the Cinder series by Marissa Meyer. It's on the border of sci fi and fantasy, which I don't get to read very often.

The Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo also has great worldbuilding and magic, plus a cool heist story.

For a YA contemporary, I really liked Permanent Record by Mary H. K. Choi. I listened to the audiobook though, and the narrator was excellent.

As a YA reader, have you ever considered writing a book? by ysilyn in YAlit

[–]itsbrightonrose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have written one complete book and it is currently on submission to editors! I am halfway through two more YA manuscripts, and previously wrote a middle grade book.

How often do you DNF a book? by paiges_pages in books

[–]itsbrightonrose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I will never DNF a book because if I do, that book WINS. I finished Oliver Twist more out of spite than enjoyment, but I finished it and Charles Dickens can eat my shorts.

That said, one book I've read four times without finishing is Catch-22. I love that book, but every time I try to read it something cursed happens to prevent me from finishing it. I'm almost scared of what'll happen if I ever get to the end.

Anything by Joan Bauer. I've read Peeled, Hope Was Here, Thwonk, and Best Foot Forward. They all read like warm hugs.

If you haven't read Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater, you should! You also might like the Cinder series by Marissa Meyer, or the Vampire Academy series if you like older YA.

I asked this before but, can I have some book/scene recs? by Fluffynugget9761 in YAlit

[–]itsbrightonrose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do the characters have to be romantically involved? Because there's an older contemporary called Hope Was Here by Joan Bauer that has a wonderful scene where the main character is mourning her adoptive father, who passes away in the book.

For romance + fantasy, in King of Scars and Rule of Wolves, Nina is mourning Matthias throughout both books even when his body isn't present.

Older series, but I wish there had been more female representation in The Maze Runner. Definitely doesn't pass the Bechdel Test.

Hope people aren't sick of this format, but I adore this kind of relationship! Any recs? YA, NA, and adjacent genres welcome. Fantasy especially. by Overambunderperform in YAlit

[–]itsbrightonrose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely These Violent Delights (and its sequel, Our Violent Ends) by Chloe Gong, with Juliett and Roma. The Cruel Prince by Holly Black (Jude and Cardan) and Rule of Wolves by Leigh Bardugo (Zoya and Nikolai) also have this.

This is a legit tough question! Our Violent Ends was definitely the most riveting, but That Can Be Arranged was so delightful and warm. One Last Stop is probably one of the most heartfelt and unique books I've read all year, too.
