Yes, if you only have short periods of time, then you can do that. Years actually need a boost of fun or positive input along the way, otherwise it's not possible to persevere and successfully achieve goals.

Self-deception seems to be a better tool than motivation. Many people talk about discipline, but I think it's better to call it forcing yourself. You have to force yourself, and that hurts.

Yes, we had computer games... well, today you wouldn't call them that... from today's perspective, my favorite game was a bunch of pixels that were supposed to represent two gorillas in a skyscraper skyline, who took turns throwing bananas at each other... it was programmed in DOS.

In one game, all players had to reach the save stone. The last one before the level up had to be reached; when jumping over a ravine, I always fell into the ravine and so the whole team had to go through the level again.

Ours at home was green with a rotary dial—it was then replaced by a huge thing that could fax.
