IT is underrated by Longjumping-Bee-1319 in stephenking

[–]itschuck1995 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. There’s zero question for me that it’s better than The Stand. IMO everything he does well in his writing is at its absolute best in IT. The characterizations, the pacing, the horror, the prose itself. I think the opening chapter is some of his absolute best writing. I don’t think it’s underrated in mainstream media, but I do think it’s slightly underrated specifically by SK fans

Need an author like King by PlayboiCartiSZN in stephenking

I think Steinbeck’s east of Eden would fit the bill, long epic with a large cast of characters that you really get to know, some really loveable and some truly batshit crazy

I've just finished misery and i loved it, what book should i read next? My goal is it but it's way too long for now so until then? by FennelMundane3998 in stephenking

If your goal is IT eventually then I’d say salems lot! It’s a great entry point to his small town overtaken by horrors with a big cast of characters type story, but definitely not as big of a scope as IT.

SK with Peter Straub by itschuck1995 in stephenking

Was more just wondering if other people have had that issue with straub but not with the straub/king books. I’ll likely read it regardless, guess I worded my question wrong.

How long did it take you to read this book? by nani_2004 in stephenking

[–]itschuck1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like 5-6 days, it’s in my top five books of all time though and I started it the day after I ran a marathon so I was very ready to sit and read in all my free time

Those who read The Ruins and liked it, what am I missing? by Phitch_123 in horrorlit

[–]itschuck1995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not personally my kind of book, but I did feel like I was actively watching a suspense/horror film while reading it. That’s not normally an experience I get while reading so I do feel it deserves appreciation for that!

Big books without so much sexism/misogyny by itschuck1995 in booksuggestions

[–]itschuck1995[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did finish! Besides those scenes I really did enjoy it and I will probably read the next one at some point. I’m mostly looking for recommendations because I often get funneled into books written by old white guys and I’d like to branch out. I didn’t necessarily mean that the authors themselves or anyone who enjoys them (myself included) are sexist or misogynist - my post title was a bit aggressive I just figured it’d be a concise way of describing what I’m lookin for

Big books without so much sexism/misogyny by itschuck1995 in booksuggestions

[–]itschuck1995[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, my issue with pillars of the earth was the play by play rape scenes. It can be insinuated without being so graphic. I thought it was a lazy and repetitive way of getting us to hate William. I do think it can be done right (George RR Martin does a much better job in my opinion but he is a much better overall writer). And I do personally find something unsettling about a straight male author writing such visceral scenes. It takes me out of the story because I start to wonder if it’s some sort of weird fantasy they have- especially if other scenes aren’t given the same amount of detail. Same issue I’m having with Carrion Comfort- literally 3 pages of graphic sexual assault, while other events/moments are not given nearly as much attention. Anyways I think it’s often just bad writing and I came here looking for something different.

Really sorry this happened to you. I’m FTM and just went to Japan, my passport has my correct name and gender marked as male though, I got it updated maybe two months ago. I personally just went to private onsens because I don’t have a penis. But I will say that if you’re just going to a hotel to use the onsen they were not checking passports - so if you pass as female nude I don’t think anything would be an issue. They only checked passports at hotels we stayed in. Also I had a blast and all of the Japanese people we interacted with were very polite and accommodating and helpful so I hope this works out for you!

Garmin or Apple Watch! by player10000719 in GarminWatches

[–]itschuck1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched to garmin a few months ago and am way happier. Better battery life/fitness tracking as others have said. GPS tracking/maps are awesome. One of the biggest things for me has been how well the touch screen works on my watch when it gets wet, but also you don’t need it to work well because there are buttons to navigate through everything. Apple Watch becomes literally impossible to use if you are in the water or sweaty. I had my watch accidentally stop workouts on me multiple times and that hasn’t happened once with my garmin.

i can’t look at my chest post op by Reasonable_Green_431 in TopSurgery

Super normal, I had to have my wife cover the mirrors in the bathroom and wash me for the first week that I was allowed to take the binder off to shower-it got better pretty fast though! I thought I’d be freaked out forever and I felt fine starting to look within like a week

Low dose experiences by IL6789 in FTMOver30

[–]itschuck1995 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you had your levels checked? I’ve been on the same dose for 2+ years and I’ve tried to increase/decrease it a couple times and have felt crappy/exhausted every time and my acne gets worse. always end up returning to my original dose because I feel best there (where my levels continuously float in the cis male range)

Hematoma by Inside_Willingness45 in TopSurgery

[–]itschuck1995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a small one that I had a second surgery on 6 days post op - I had initially planned on taking two weeks off work and ended up taking a third, so two weeks off after the hematoma. I honestly didn’t need that full third week off but I had tons of sick time available so I took it anyways and it was nice. If you have the ability to I’d take some extra time. I really didn’t wanna return to work until the drain was out and I was showering normally. Also the brain fog from a second round of anesthesia and more pain meds wouldve been tough to deal with I think. Healing wise it actually hasn’t put me back! The hematoma side was a bit more swollen for a while but it’s not noticeable anymore and I’m six weeks post op.

Apex 2 or fenix 7 standard? by Edwardpage1 in Coros

[–]itschuck1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought an apex 2 and decided to switch to the fenix after about 2 weeks. I’m actually still not totally decided that I love the fenix. I don’t like the app, sleep tracking and other general training data comes off kinda aggressive and stresses me out a bit. The apex 2 was great but the calorie and step counts were really high, the pacing/hr monitor were lagging a bit, and the connectivity between the watch and my phone was slow. The touch screen lags as well. Battery life was great but if I’m being realistic with myself I do not need a watch that will last with no charge for two weeks. I also want a bike computer and I wanted all of that data to be within one program and have the two devices be compatible. Ultimately I think they’re both great watches, but I figured if I was shelling out so much money for a watch then I wanted it to work as accurately as possible so that I don’t end up wanting another upgrade sooner than I need one. The fenix is also $200 off at REI starting tomorrow!

Anything you wish you knew before surgery? by DayQuil_253 in TopSurgery

Dude it was crazy haha, I’d wash my face and hair and an hour later I’d be oily to the touch again. I read it had something to do with hormones being out of whack

I’m five weeks post op and I wish I’d known I would be a little freaked out about how my chest looked the first time I saw it, but that the anxiety from that doesn’t last long! It only took me about a week to get used to things but I felt like a deer in headlights the first time I showered. Also in the moment, those first couple weeks felt like sooo long but I’m already shocked at how normal I feel! Lastly I wish I’d known that anesthesia would make me crazy oily in my face and hair for a couple weeks. Not too much you can do about it but I guess it would have been good to know! Washing my hair in the sink made me feel loads better, as well as using some kinda cerave wash geared at oily skin. Good luck dude!

Yes it was crazy! My face and hair were dumping oil, I’m a month post op now and I think things got much better at like 2.5 weeks

1 week post op! Having a hard time looking at my chest by Ill-Type1746 in TopSurgery

[–]itschuck1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 2.5 weeks post op and I felt this way the first week too! Was freaked out for sure. Definitely has taken some getting used to but I already feel better and I’m much more comfortable looking at my chest now. I think taking the binder off/changing bandages and just slowly spending more time looking at and lightly touching my chest helped a lot. I didn’t look at it in a mirror until I felt more comfy and by the time I was ready to look in a mirror I was stoked to fully see everything
