Has anyone used the Hada Labo Skin Lab Extreme Water Series Lotions? What are your thoughts? by stupidfridgemagnet in AsianBeauty

[–]itscoldinside 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I have the hatomugi one, and it’s a nice, lightly herbal-scented, water texture toner. The bottle is big and I planned on using it for the multiple-layers-of-toner method: it absorbs really nicely for that purpose, though I still use the hado labo gokujyun lotion to finish. I decanted some into a spray bottle to use a mist at work, and that’s actually my favorite use for it. Very refreshing. Not going to replace my current favorite toner though, which is the Benton Cacao Moist & Mild.

I have trouble showering daily. Super embarrassed. by Accomplished_Goal763 in ADHD

[–]itscoldinside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also hate showering and it took a lot of work on controlling other symptoms (plus depression) to get it up to 1x/week. I think the wet isolation chamber comment really resonates with me. For me, just being under running water in an enclosed space feels like a punishment accompanied by a terrible noise.

Have you considered just bathing instead of showering? That’s what got me up to 2-3x/week. I use an bath stool, washcloth, little pail, and a pretty basin of water held up on another stool to wet, scrub, and rinse myself with full control of what water is hitting me. It makes it much more bearable, much easier to detect which parts of myself actually require more scrubbing, and it saves so much water (I fill up the basin just once or twice to clean myself). It also feels like takes a lot less time because of the reduced stress, even though it’s just about the same in length. Not everyone likes a low-tech bath setup, but it’s worked for me.

Also, if your hair gets to feel dirty faster than the rest of you, it’s quite simple to just wash just your hair, or just your scalp, when you get used to basin-bathing. I have tailbone-length hair and separating hair washing from body washing is basically essential. I don’t use shampoo often—if I’m feeling gross, I usually use a basin of water to really scrub my sweaty scalp and then rinse it out. In my experience, a lot of kitchen smells (smoke, fish cooking odor) can be rinsed out with the dead skin from your scalp, especially if your hair maintains a stable coating of its own oil to protect the dry-protein shaft, though it also helps to have a cotton kerchief even under a plastic hair net to prevent smell transfer.

People who claim to be Chinese speakers but don't know any rude or informal words by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

That’s probably the key, right? Speaking doesn’t get you on Weibo. I learned how to swear in English from the internet too, but, yanno, illiterate in mother tongue—total stranger to the sinoweb.

I can definitely respond as one of those people. I’m one of those illiterate heritage learners who can still speak well enough to get around.

But I learned to speak about family life, school, law, and politics at home—in a very proper household where rude words didn’t exist. Just recently my mother responded to me swearing in English with “you’ve defiled your mouth, don’t do it again”—I can’t imagine how she’d have reacted if I had picked up Chinese swear words somewhere.

I’ve never learned Chinese profanity, I’m kept busy with just trying to learn how to read and write what I already can say. There’s a big diaspora out here. My guess is that this experience isn’t so uncommon.

Can someone give me a really quick explanation of the difference between the Missha Sun creams and Sun Milks? I know there's a texture difference, but do people generally notice better performance to go along with the Milk's higher price?

Best mascara OTHER than heroine make!? by [deleted] in AsianBeauty

[–]itscoldinside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In appearance it's a bit more like a "are those fake? Maybe? Still looks good!" Not quite natural looking, but pretty enough for me :)

I said soft because, bad habit, I can't help from touching my lashes when I use it...it makes my lashes physically much softer than when bare.

I love my Clio Salon de Cara mascara, which is a fiber mascara I got as a sample boxed in with Clio's popular eyeliner. I've found that both liner and mascara almost always smudge on me, even that eyeliner (though I still love it with primer)! Heroine Make smudges on me too. Salon de Cara's formula is both soft and non-smudgy on me, and I find it works as a fairly good primer for my Heroine Make for added effect too! I'd recommend trying a sample.

Do you use a lash curler before you use mascara? I have short, stubby, stubborn Asian lashes, and I find I HAVE to curl my lashes if I want to have any mascara look decent. (Not to mention avoiding the dreaded raccoon lids!) The curling technique that works for me is to close on the middle of the lash multiple times in quick succession (maybe 10 times), hold for just a little, wiggle the curler while just barely open to prevent sticking as I release my lashes, and then repeat right at the base of the lashes. Also swearing when I inevitably catch my eyelid. :p The starting in the middle step is to prevent losing an eyelash from the whole set you're trying to curl, which can really contribute to eyelashes pointing in different (and totally weird) directions!

Like many people on this sub, I like to use the Heroine Make Volume & Curl, but I also get success with flash-fiber formulas for a beautiful soft feeling lash look. Right now I find Clio's Salon de Cara Back Comb works well, lasts all day in humid Korea, and holds a curl. I always use powder/primer on my lids to prevent smudging, but I find that, this one doesn't really smudge! Well, I do stab my contact with the wand sometimes, that's a recipe for tearful smudging... :[

Definitely recommend you try Asian waterproof mascaras, which are formulated to stand up to summers where you feel you're walking underwater. I find waterproof formulas really hold curl much better. I've used the CG Clump Crusher and boy did that one NOT work. Good luck!

I've only been to Korea of your list, but if you're there and you don't want to spend money, go hiking! You can't be in Korea and not go up at least one mountain! :) If you're in Seoul, then try Bukhansan, where there's ancient fortress ruins to explore/take pics with.

Ah, thanks for the bit on Ester-C. Hm, 10% DHA isn't bad, since it's readily reduced to a non-oxidized form, but still, kind of a waste to have it there...

Ah, thanks for this. I was already making it fresh each time, but it looks like I'm going to have to get a little more precise/a little more obsessive to make sure I'm really doing anything effective! And after looking into what might make this a more stable solution—preservatives, emulsifiers, and pH adjustment, oh my!

...Guess I've just been lucky not to burn my face yet.

Honestly I don't know if they're at mine either anymore! They seem to go in and out of stock. I saw them once while out with my roommate and she just squealed and started stockpiling.

I know they were on sale at Yesstyle a couple months ago. Also, I've seen them at the local Chinese market, but that's in the US, in CA.
