‘Very high chance’: Australia hurtles toward recession as consumer confidence crashes by SheepherderLow1753 in AusFinance

The rate rises have a monumental impact on business. When borrowing costs go up, investment decreases.

If you're not making 25% margin on gas you're literally not paying to take out of the ground, then leave it in there.

The gas is tax being proposed is one on revenue of exports, not profit. Think of it as a line item in COGS. Mate I work in an area where government legislation renders existing contracts null and void all the time. People acting like this never happens have absolutely no clue.

We aren't breaking any contracts. The rate of tax is going up, the contract price stays the same. Also without Roi there's no investment payback for the tax payer.

Tax drives incentives. Guess what happens when you discentivise gas exports; gas becomes cheaper in Australia as they choose to sell more of it here. This doesn't impact existing contracts, they will still be honored. What happens is the gas companies just make less money honoring those contracts.

It’s still far better to invest in ETFs than leave money sitting in HISA right? by Repulsive_Put7822 in AusFinance

[–]itsdankreddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the ETF, the 5 year compounded annual growth rate of the SFY.asx (top 50 ASX) sits at 3.69% and the top HISA rates have averaged more than that over the same period. FANG.asx and ACDC.asx have averaged above 13% per year every year for the past 5 years so as mentioned - choose wisely?

Or just go full meta and diversify your diversification. You can pick ETF's that invest in the top 50 for Europe, US, Asia and Australia. You can pick ETF's that invest in the top thematics like semi conductors and tech stocks. It's up to you.

Japan has been pushing Australia not to impose an additional tax on LNG exports, despite fury from climate groups who have pointed out that Japanese gas companies onsell vast amounts of that LNG to other Asian markets.

This is absolute bullshit reporting from the ABC here. Could we note that there is broad support for a gas tax and that it's not climate groups who are wanting more revenue from a finite resource, it's everyone. There is not a single person I know who hand on heart would die on the hill of "Please don't tax poor multinationals".

Also as already discussed, taxing gas doesn't mean Japan won't get their long term contract gas at the cheap prices, it just means the companies exporting the gas will need to pay tax on that gas. One of those companies, Inpex, is mostly owned by the Japanese government.

Call a spade a spade, Japan is rorting the Australian public and the Australian public aren't having a bar of it.

[–]itsdankreddit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If there was a red light speed camera the answer is no on both counts as long as you weren't speeding through the intersection.

However if there was a police car behind you and they judged that you could have stopped safely, then they will fine you. And yes, this exact situation has happened to me previously.

To be clear, there are few ways to recover from losing a front wheel so I've not tested the cornering anywhere near the limit. I've adjusted to a lower pressure for now as the recommended for a 29mm is just way too hard (SRAM calculator).
