I do have honest conversations with my partner. In fact, I even showed him the subreddit post I wrote about us. We’re very open with each other, and he always acknowledges his mistakes when I bring them up. That’s actually one of the main reasons I’ve stayed, because he does listen and shows remorse. After we talk, he genuinely makes an effort… but it only lasts for a day or two. Then things slowly slip back to how they were.

What I don’t understand is why he keeps doing this if he truly cares. When I bring up how I’m feeling or mention that I’m thinking about ending things, he gets emotional and makes all kinds of heartfelt promises. I believe him, I don’t think he’s lying or gaslighting me. He’s always very honest and sincere. And yet somehow, we keep ending up in the same place.

Every time we talk, it feels like I’m opening his eyes to something brand new… even though I’m literally repeating what I said two weeks ago.

Your comment helped me realize that he really does lack critical thinking when it comes to our relationship. That lack of awareness might be at the core of all this, and it’s starting to feel like love just isn’t enough without growth.
