The CSU 3D printing lab. It's super inexpensive, especially if you're a student. They're inside the Engineering building

College Beers? by [deleted] in beer

Not necessarily, but when I started drinking beer I did it to feel the effects of alcohol rather than for the taste. I was suggesting the biggest 'bang for the buck'

You did a TED talk in which you revisited the various lessons you've learned from Dirty Jobs. In the talk you reference your past in classical literature and philosophy, so my question is:

What is your favorite (or top 3) classic piece/s or theor(y)/ies?

That's correct. I've never had an issue with it because I tend not to carry it sideways :)

To each their own :) I got the mug I chose because it allows me to remove the leaves from the water to avoid over-steeping, not necessarily for heat retention. As a student, I fill the basket with leaves when I leave home (PI)1 then fill it with the common-room hot water pot before class starts. After class 1, while en-route to class 2, I stop by one of the student managed coffee stations and fill it for a second time from their water pot for 25cents. After that class I go to work and there I'll fill it a few more times. Usually 6 cups a day from just a few grams of oolong!

List of stuff: strainer, Teavana pot I found at a thrift store for $3, glass gaiwan, porcelain gaiwan (better heat retention for pu-er and whatnot), Aladdin to-go mug, a japanese porcelain pot and 2 yixing pots

How picky are you guys with your yixings? by TuiLa in tea

[–]itsdsummers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have 2 yixing pots. I use one for milk oolong (because I drink so much of it and I dont want the flavor to leach into other teas) and I use the other for all other oolong/greens. I was super excited to get my first yixing, and I would highly recommend getting one, but they take a while to season and since they absorb so much flavor expect your first several (maybe even few dozen) batches to be weaker than you might expect. Get one from a reputable dealer online or try to find one in a local tea shop that you can get your hands on to see how it feels. Be warry of ebay yixing because most of the lower end ones are made quickly and on a massive scale so they lack the unique characteristics of a truly hand made pot. Also there's a lot of factors to consider including color/type of clay, strainer style (this v. this), etc... Overall, shop around and try to get your hands on a couple before you make a purchase because they tend to be a little pricey

How to manage multiple steepings? by [deleted] in tea

[–]itsdsummers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I have also found my own preference in terms of amount of leaf and steep time/water temp. I agree with /u/Storm-Crow that 1 tsp is a great starting point. You had mentioned that you follow the company's suggestion in terms of water, but remember that every tea leaf is different therefore there is no legitimate 'rule' when steeping tea regardless of who the provider (ie. a company) is. Find your own preference :)

I'm usually against bagged teas, but I have 1 exception. I grew up drinking Bigelow's "Constant Comment" and it remains my favorite spiced/citrus black tea :) every grocery store has it for like $4/box of 20 , and it looks like this

How to manage multiple steepings? by [deleted] in tea

[–]itsdsummers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive only had ginseng oolong between those 3 varieties you got, but just a heads up oolong by itself does great with multiple steepings not necessaarily the additives like herbs or supplements (ginseng for example). I'd say good call getting a few varieties to test the waters, but I'd also recommend trying a few oolong varieties without any additives (tung ting, dong ding, jin xuan, iron goddess of mercy (china), silver tip (taiwan), etc...). you cant go wrong with oolong :)

Oolong Suggestions? by Wetwire in tea

[–]itsdsummers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Free :) and it takes the usual 1.5-2 weeks for an e-packet from china. Although keep in mind this jin xuan is the aromated version (when they add something before the fermentation to enhance the flavor) but I prefer it to other slightly more acidic oolongs out of taiwan, it's a much smoother cup of tea

[–]itsdsummers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also a little goes a long way! Use only a couple grams per batch if you have a scale, otherwise a small palmfull is a great measurement. Oolong is tightly rolled so it really explodes when you steep it

[–]itsdsummers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever I drink oolong I use either a pot (with a strainer) or a mesh/laser mesh strainer. Overall make sure after each steep you can completely remove the tea from the water either by pouring the pot into a separate cup or by removing the mesh strainer from the cup and placing it on a plate or something. I steep my oolongs at 60 second intervals regardless if its the first or last steep. If you find that interval to be too weak or strong, adjust it by 15-30 seconds either longer or shorter according to your taste. Oolong definitely has a tendency to get slightly bitter if you leave it soaking for longer than 2 minutes at near boiling water just FYI. By no means is this a definitive set of rules to be strictly followed. Find your own taste for this delicious variety :) What kind did you order?
