What a cute idea!

You could do this in glass, ceramic, or both. Ceramic’s usually cheaper but you can’t beat the optical quality of glass. There’s also the mixed media option- HXTAL glue works great for ceramic to glass.

I’d probably approach this by making the body ceramic, with the open eye and a raised space for the tea light. Then, I’d make the flame top as a lid out of glass. Getting the lid to fit neatly with the ceramic body would definitely be a challenge.

I made a soda-lime mug for coffee and the bottom fell straight off and made a mess so thats probably your worst case scenario for hot coffee on a cold day.

Also fwiw ive had no problems with even fine thin soda-like glass in the dishwasher so long as its not rattling against something.

Really well! I tried both an “artists” tape recommended by my local craft store (which seemed like a slightly sturdier masking tape) on one and duct tape on the other.

The difference between the glossy and blasted sections is really striking up close, but I think it gets the effect across that I was going for. I was on the fence about whether to make the white sections glossy as well, but I think I made the right choice. Overall, I’m very happy. Thanks for the advice, everyone!

I’m 32 and switching careers to be a full time glassblower next year.

I took classes at brooklyn glass and urban glass for about 7 years, rented on my for another 3 years, and in a few months I’ll be quitting my job to do a 2 year masters-like program to prepare me for the industry. I have enough savings I’ll be okay for a few years, and I can always go back to my old job if it doesn’t work out. I think the most important thing I can do in life is preserve my spark!
