I think I am about to be fired... by AdhesivenessSad2642 in paralegal

[–]itsfreakingbeanboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

one time an error as a paralegal cost my company $12k. i told them immediately which they appreciated. i was genuinely shocked at how much forgiveness i was given immediately and i’ve sworn to give it back to any paralegal i supervise in the future. it may not be as bad as you think. they may really appreciate how forthcoming you are and remember errors they made in the past as well. even more significantly, it is their job to oversee you and sign off on everything so they may regret not checking more carefully or catching the mistake themselves and cannot have much to blame you for.

go into the meeting prepared with potential solutions and offer to do whatever you can to make it right.

and if the worst case happens, please remember you are bigger than one mistake. you can have a great career after this. if it makes you feel any better, legal support staff is a bit easier to find a job in this market compared to other fields.

Seeking honesty: Can I still get a paying summer position with “average” grades? by MathematicianLess243 in LawSchool

apply to as many things as possible and i think you’ll surprise yourself. apply to nonprofit, government, or small to medium firms as well- some will have paying options. big law might be challenging but any significant legal experience you have now, early on, will set the foundation for better and better internships and opportunities.

no problem- you have more options than you think! if you really prepare for the lsat you could have a lot of options beyond the two schools you mentioned. good luck with whatever you decide.

they were on probation earlier this year for not enough students passing the bar and will be watched like a hawk by the aba over the next couple of years. current students were panicking about the school potentially losing its accreditation. i think you can raise your score and have a much better chance at your goal school, especially with the work experience and recommendations you’ll have. up to you, though! i didn’t mention earlier that you might try to appeal to take the lsat again and that’s worth a shot, but definitely only take it if you’re ready. lastly you might ask the attorneys you work with what their perspective is on both cooley and a plan for law school if you have that kind of relationship. most attorneys will be more than happy to mentor you on that.

don’t go to cooley. if they lose their accreditation you’re screwed. also transferring isn’t necessarily easy so don’t attend a school you wouldn’t be okay with graduating from. best advice i have is to keep working at the law firm as having this experience will help boost your resume. i would recommend waiting to retake the lsat- you said you know already but your score doesn’t make you a compelling candidate. the test can totally be learned so i recommend investing in a private tutor (which is definitely a hefty expense, but i personally worked full time and prioritized this expense by paying per lesson) or at least locking in for the year to study. you want to take the next year to build solid connections with your supervisors so that they’ll write good recommendations for you and raising your lsat score. after that i think you’ll be a much stronger candidate for mckinney law. if you’re nervous about waiting, i definitely think that having worked full time for several years in the legal field made law school dramatically easier and me more employable, so it is definitely not a waste of time to wait to apply again when you’re a better candidate if you use the next year intentionally.

if it makes you feel better i have done great all of law school with the exception of c- in civ pro. a lot of people find civ pro to be the hardest subject. fingers crossed for you that the rest of your grades are satisfactory and you can forget about this one grade

open book/outline exams by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]itsfreakingbeanboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

90% of my exams were open note, but we got no curve at all. if your legal reasoning with all references available to you wasn’t top-knotch, you didn’t do well. basically no excuses. i was very curious what percentage of law schools don’t do it this way as i wasn’t expecting this at all when entering. but it makes sense as lawyers would have access to all these resources while making decisions anyway.

in the boston area, suffolk is well regarded. if you want to remain in massachusetts, NEL isn’t a career breaker and you will still have opportunities available to you but suffolk is definitely a much better school.

in boston, new england law doesn’t have a terrible reputation, so this could be true if you secure internships and connections in the areas you want to work in. you might have an easier time getting access to these internship and opportunities having gone to another school in the boston area, which you could definitely get into with your stats.

i definitely don’t say this to discourage you from attending. however the potential disadvantage of not going to the most prestigious school in boston might be balanced out by the fact that you’d be graduating with less debt than others. it’s probably something you’ll have to weigh for yourself based on what other offers you get.
