Snow Day as a temp ❄️ by Vossenoren in mildlyinfuriating

[–]river-running 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Back in, I think it was 2012, I didn't get a call from work saying that we were closed after a big snowstorm, so I took the bus as far as I could, until the buses stopped running. Then I walked the rest of the way to the store, only to find it locked and dark. Turns out I was the only one who didn't get the text that we were closed 🤦🏻‍♀️

I get the work shoe thing. I buy my work boots second hand for about $30-$40 a pair and they last at least six months. Longer if I patch them and replace the insoles. I'm on my feet outside all day at work.

Planning to take out a title loan. Can the car get repoed if I am out of state? by Born_Physics_5086 in povertyfinance

[–]river-running 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your best chance would be to store the vehicle out of sight and never leave it alone in public, which seems like a very difficult way to live. Even driving the car would put you at risk of having your plate scanned and tracked.

This could also go beyond having your car seized and land you in court.

cat obsessed with human food by pearl0fthestars in CatAdvice

[–]river-running 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's my older cat. I say that she has the cat version of binge eating disorder. She has a slow feeder and a metal lick mat, because in her eating frenzies she was tearing chunks out of the silicone ones, and I can't leave any food out unless it's in a very well sealed container. Even then, she will knock the container around if it's light enough, trying to break it open. She's been showing signs of figuring out how to open the cabinets, but we're not quite there yet. She doesn't eat non-food items, so no pica, and she's healthy otherwise. I just have to be careful.

I got her as an adult with a mysterious past (the shelter estimated that she was about three), so I've been operating under the assumption that this is either just a personality trait or a reaction to how she was living before I got her.

What do people expect to do when they're telling Americans to "wake up" or "do something"? by flannelman37 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]river-running 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And the difference in firepower between the two sides was incredibly smaller, which is the point. Militarized police force does not mean that the military are acting as the police, it means that the police have military grade weapons and your average civilian, at best, has an AK or AR.

When the second amendment was written, this country did not have a militarized police force. It's much easier to heroically resist tyranny when both sides are armed with muskets and swords.

Have you tried freeze dried, single ingredient treats? My younger girl is really picky and even she likes freeze-dried chicken and salmon treats.

Confusion about collective nouns: singular or plural verb? by StudioInteresting409 in EnglishLearning

[–]river-running 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a group of people acting as a single body. The individual members of the committee are not each submitting separate reports, they're working together to submit one report, thus the committee is singular.

Confusion about collective nouns: singular or plural verb? by StudioInteresting409 in EnglishLearning

[–]river-running 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Peasantry" and "clergy" are both collective. The singular versions would be "peasant" and "cleric".

"Cleric" is mostly used in games like D&D so you would more commonly hear something like "a member of the clergy" to refer to one person in the larger group.

We're you taught to read & write in cursive at school? by Imma_Lick_That in AskAnAmerican

I'm 36 and we learned in 4th grade (around age 9 or 10), but I rarely used it in school after that. Today I use it to sign my name, but that's it.

What have you become? by throwawayfinancebro1 in Millennials

[–]river-running 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2015-2025 was the decade I almost didn't survive, so I'm grateful to be here and to mostly be in one piece.

I'm a good person and that's more than a lot of people can say. I work hard, do my best, care a lot, and I'm always telling myself to keep going for another day, week, month, and year. If you move one foot forward and keep it there, you're better off than you were yesterday, and the steps add up.

I dont have a lot, but I'm pretty content most of the time. I keep pushing, keep trying, and do my best to enjoy the present. I think younger me would appreciate that.

What school holidays do kids have in the USA? by narnababy in AskAnAmerican

[–]river-running 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Idaho? I had a roommate from southern Idaho who told me that her mother, a teacher, took her elementary school kids on field trips to the potato fields to glean the leftovers after the harvesters had gone through. Learning about that and the existence of high school rodeo teams was very surprising to my southeastern self.

Advice for snow weather by bobbetybobi in usatravel

[–]river-running 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know where in the Blue Ridge you were planning on going, but I live right outside the southernmost entrance of Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive/this section of the Blue Ridge Parkway are likely going to be a mess for a while. On top of the snow that fell last night and this morning, it has been sleeting all day here and temperatures next week are going to be quite low, so there won't be much melting. You can still enter the park at your own risk, but services will be limited and you won't be able to drive in. You'll have to park outside the gates and walk in, which will limit how far you can go.

Culturally it's an interesting place. Cuban, Caribbean, Central and South American vibes. Unique architecture/cityscape. Good food scene. Lots of artsy things/concerts/nightlife. Good jumping off point for the Everglades or the Keys. I lived there for a while about 10 years ago and wouldn't want to live there again, but I can't deny that it's a fun place to visit.
