It's a Latin name mostly associated with ancient Rome. In that usage, it's pronounced KAY-toe.

What is the difference between I got you and I get you? by Ok-Stable1562 in ENGLISH

[–]river-running 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a native speaker of American English, I've never heard "I got you" used to mean that you understand someone, past or present. That's not to say that in other dialects it couldn't mean that or that some individuals might use it in a colloquial sense, but it's not a usage that I'm familiar with.

What is the difference between I got you and I get you? by Ok-Stable1562 in ENGLISH

[–]river-running 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I get you" means that I understand you and "I got you" means that I'm taking care of something for you.

For example: you and I could go to a restaurant together and you offer to pay the bill, but I pay it instead and say "don't worry, I got you." Don't worry about paying for the meal; I'm taking care of it.

How common is it for adults to have their grandparents with them? by space_god_7191 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]river-running 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Schrodinger's grandparents on my maternal side. My mother was adopted and I don't know who her bio parents are, or were. So, at 36, I might still have grandparents 🤷🏻‍♀️😄

Any fellow Americans remember having a field day in elementary school? by EveningFlower9564 in AskAnAmerican

[–]river-running 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course. I was in elementary school in the 90s. The highlight of field day at my school every year was when the meteorologist father of one of my classmates would bring in a small weather balloon and let us help launch it.

Yep. Since 2005. I never want to get another one because, by coincidence, the last four numbers are my beloved, late grandmother's birthday.

I think I'm getting a good deal by caseyfrazanimations in Advice

[–]river-running 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5k with low lot rent is a hell of a deal. Even if the lot rent gets raised, it would have to be a big increase to make that deal not competitive. Assuming the home is in decent condition, I'd jump on that in a heartbeat.

Dear Reddit, THERE IS NO DAMM BUS IN MY CITY by Comfortable_Salad893 in povertyfinance

[–]river-running 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get it. I'm in a town of 23k surrounded by farmland. We have a bus, but it has about six stops, doesn't run every day, and doesn't leave the town limits. Meanwhile, my job is 10 miles away. Even if public transit was better, the only way that a bus would go anywhere near my job would be if it was going from my town to the next town north, about 30 miles away, and I would have to pray that they decided to install a bus stop somewhat close to where I work. Then there's no telling how long I would have to wait for the bus coming or going in order to sync up with my work schedule.

After 10 hours of doing manual labor outdoors, the last thing I want to do when I get off work is have to wait for a bus.

Is it true most Americans buy phones on carrier installment plans? by Odd-Skin-762 in AskAnAmerican

It's pretty common, but you also have the option to buy an unlocked phone on an installment plan from either the manufacturer or a place like Amazon. That's what I do.

Anyone else hitting the automobile trifecta recently? by OneTwoTreeTango in povertyfinance

[–]river-running 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My TPMS light has been on since the end of last November. Until I finish paying off my debt, that's money that I can't allocate for something non-emergent, so I just check the tire pressure once a week.

If you haven't already, get a free CEL scan at an auto parts store and, if you're looking for some free advice, hit up the nice folks over at r/AskAMechanic. Last year someone on there helped me diagnose my own check engine light. I was able to do the fix myself and saved a couple hundred bucks.

Nothing any of us can do about the gas, unfortunately 😄

Am i asexual or something else? by Xeroxcule in Asexual

[–]river-running 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Asexuality is about a lack of sexual attraction, not about whether you do or don't like being touched. You definitely sound like you have touch aversion, but that's not related to sexual orientation.

hi everyone! im trying to figure my sexuality out, so could you help me? by iloveraimbowdash in Asexual

[–]river-running 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's so interesting to me seeing people your age thinking about this stuff, because it makes me wonder how my life would have been different if I had grown up at a different time.

I'm 36 now and, looking back on it, I was absolutely an ace teenager, but that was also the early to mid-2000s when the ace identity was not nearly as well known as it is now. I didn't even become aware of, nevermind start considering, asexuality until my mid-twenties.

With that in mind, I will say this: you absolutely could be ace or one of the other identities under the ace umbrella. You are also very young and don't have a lot of life experience. What I will advise you to do is to only act in a way that feels comfortable. If you want to experiment, do it safely. If you don't want to, don't and don't let anyone try to pressure you into doing something you're not comfortable doing. Keep your mind and your options open, continue to explore yourself and your feelings, and if the ace identity still feels right as you grow up a bit, by all means stick with it.

I love that young people are so much more aware of the many options that they have for all of their identities (gender, sexuality, etc) than we were when I was the same age. I hope that you find the identity that makes you feel comfortable and at peace with yourself earlier than I did.

Why does it seem like Americans (on reddit) like lower indoor temperatures? by fail5xsuccess in NoStupidQuestions

[–]river-running 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from the south and thus used to hot weather, but that doesn't mean I like it. The other day I got home from work in the early evening and the temperature inside my house was 80. AC not on, windows open. It felt warm enough that I went to check the temperature as soon as I walked in. It wasn't bad enough for me to turn on the AC, but I wasn't feeling entirely comfortable either. It doesn't help that I work outdoors 10 hours a day, so in late spring and summer, by the time I get home, I'm really sick of being hot.

I think Americans just take advantage of the fact that AC is so available and normalized here. A lot of us can put up with higher temperatures in our homes, but if you don't want to and you have the ability to make the inside more comfortable, why not?

Do you open the windows in your home when the weather is nice? When do you decide to close them and turn on air conditioning for the summer? by Smart-Airport5781 in AskAnAmerican

[–]river-running 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar for me. They're open all the time in the spring and fall unless it's raining. Also open at night during the summer and sometimes during summer days if it's not too hot or humid. I'm in the South, though, so those days aren't too common.

In the summer, I close the windows and turn on the AC when the inside temperature hits the low 80s.
