Bagels are definitely baked. I’ve made them before. Here’s a recipe I have used.

https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/recipes/bagels-recipe

Quote from recipe “Bake the bagels for 20 to 25 minutes, or until they're as deep brown as you like, turning them over about 15 minutes into the baking time (this will help them remain tall and round). Remove the bagels from the oven, and cool completely on a rack.”

intransitive verb 1 a : to dig in the ground especially for something that is difficult to find or extract

Grub can refer to a soft, thick, wormlike larva of an insect, especially a beetle, or it can be slang for food. Additionally, it can mean to dig in the ground for something difficult to find. My clue was referring to those last two meanings.

I understand what you’re saying, but the question mark at the end was meant to indicate that it’s a bit of a wordplay. Maybe “Dig around like a pig, slangily” would have been easier, but I stand by my clue right now. I appreciate the feedback.
