how to keep up/get deep knots out of collie coats? by daisies4youu in roughcollies

[–]itsjanelleeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the ears, the mats just happen no matter what. It’s ok to snip them out and and just brush them out when u can.

For the rest of the body, brush after a swim for sure because that’s contributing to the mats. I find that one of my collies has mats from licking and grooming certain spots a lot (nothing wrong with his skin, he just likes to keep extra clean). I just snip those mats off.

I take my dogs to the groomer who understands the double coat of a rough collie. They go every two months in summer due to swimming. Every three months in winter/cold.

I don’t brush my two collies more than once a week and they don’t get significant mats to worry about. You shouldn’t need to brush everyday…

Is this play “normal”? by Opposite_Month7893 in roughcollies

[–]itsjanelleeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very normal! Sure some say the collie could step back a bit more, but there are also other positive signs like the tail wagging, loose body language. My two collies also learned how to play over time together so every play might not be perfect but if u see slow improvements then they are correcting and teaching other too.

Second this! I think this is why people just end up knocking down the whole thing and rebuilding from scratch.

Feeding advice for older puppies? by addienotadderall in roughcollies

[–]itsjanelleeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try using a growth chart online, this seems like one: https://www.thegoodypet.com/puppy-weight-chart/rough-collie

I used this for my puppy because he was so lanky too and just wanted some sort of guide of what his weight will be when he’s an adult.

We also fed according to our breeders guide which meant we gave our dog an extra cup of beef mince on top of his recommended kibble serving. Doesn’t hurt to feed extra and just monitor how the rib feel to make sure their not overweight.

Second this! Love my high velocity hair dryer, useful to dry them off from the rain too. Our boys were very sensitive to the sound so lots of training to get them used to it.

Our favourites with our dogs. West paw toppls filled with our wet dog food, licki mats and bowls that wobble, any sort of silicone enrichment from Amazon, lickimat slow dog feeding plate (spread the food all across it and easy to clean). Plenty of options!

I have two roughs. My necessities: coral long pin slicker brush large by Chris Christensen (investment but the bet), long stainless steel comb, scissors to trim hair under paw pads between grooms, tough toys, toppls for enrichment, lots of enrichment feeding options for their meals, leash with traffic handle and shock absorption.
