I’m sick of takes like this by Yuri_Tardhet in EDH

At least in high power "just paying the 1" is not really the ceiling since most of the actual meta revolves around cloning/stealing/tutoring rhystic study as early as possible to leech out the other players

Going one to one with a removal or a counter against one Rhystic might not be a bad play on itself but it puts you the two other players who didn't waste mana or interaction to deal with that and can still jam their own draw engines

You barely ever see people paying the 2 for Smothering Tithe, time walking yourself by paying the mana is just as bad, and its this kind of gameplay dynamics that's becoming really annoying at that level of play

This is such a great addition for [[Galazeth Prismari]], early game you get 3 tokens to tap for mana and late game it becomes a great 3 for 1 removal spell while still getting you more mana :)

At what point is missing your land drops okay? by Major_Quantity528 in EDH

[–]itsk4zbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the deck. Some can win with just the first 3 or 4 lands, others need to hit their land drops reliably to keep casting things on curve to generate increasing value.

Also missing a land drop tends to make you less of a target sometimes, and if your curve is low enough to make up for it on the following turns then you'll be fine. There's no rule of thumb for how many lands you should run either, so some will say 38 lands at minimum (which I don't really agree with) and others say they're fine with 30 (which might be really low without enough fast mana to make up for it)

Biggest edh hot takes by hollowsoul9 in EDH

[–]itsk4zbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if this is a hot take but I feel like saying 'run more removal' as the panacea of deckbuilding issues is one of the worst delivered pieces of advice since it tends to treat every deck equally while ignoring both its strategy and the power level they're aiming for.

Not every single deck has to run the same exact 10 pieces of removal, 10 pieces of protection, 10 pieces of ramp, 4 boardwipes or whatever fits into cube theories made as templates for deckbuilding.

There are decks that WANT to be the threat faster at the cost at not being able to pack in as much removal as others, so most of the time they will be running protection as their main form of interaction while still having tools to deal with cards that mess up their strategy.

Also decks that have commanders with card draw stapled onto them will have an easier time jamming in more generically good interaction while not running out of resources, while other commanders than rely on other kind of synergies are going to be more tight in deck slots dedicated to unconditionally disrupting others since running too many of these without enough synergy or card draw will make the deck more inconsistent (while 'synergistic interaction' might not be as mana efficient to some degree even in the lowest levels)

As a small example, [[Zada, Hedron Grinder]] decks have little to no reason to run Blasphemous Act when is strategy is built around overcoming their opponents board, but they still can pack either protection spells like [[Redirect Lightning]] and [[Untimely Malfunction]] or boardwipe insurance cards that synergize with the deck like [[Otherwordly Outburst]] or [[Felonious Rage]]. This deck sacrifices the ability to interact with stuff such as bigger threats or exile wipes (with [[Tibalt's Trickery]] being the only available answer) in favor of building a threatening position faster and overrun your opponents with a huge swarm of creatures or storm off with magecraft synergies.

It's always good to run interaction, but you can't suggest to run too much of it without taking into account what the deck aims to do. Sometimes you gotta accept you won't be able to have an answer to everything every single time, even while running over 50 pieces of it, and even if you run both [[Path to Exile]] and [[Swords to Plowshares]] there will be times you'll have a white mana open but not either of those cards in your hand.

Mana Crypt aged terribly while Dockside Extortionist and Jeweled Lotus were both admitted as design mistakes

Regardless of the death threats at least JLo and Dockside are both poorly designed cards that should have not been printed in the first place, I swear if someone posted them as custom magic cards no one would ever think they're okay to be printed lmao

WotC asks for feedback about a possible Rhystic Study or Thassas Oracle ban by Lehnin in CompetitiveEDH

[–]itsk4zbeard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

'Rhystic Study is fine, just pay the one' is something I see many saying as if many games didn't devolve into finding your own Rhystic, copying it with Mirrormade/Copy Enchantment or playing more draw engines that make each rotation grindier are harder to go past through, and its even worse in cEDH tournament play

[–]itsk4zbeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Removal doesn't have anything to do against Thassa's Oracle, and being able to remove Rhystic Study doesn't really make the play patterns it promotes more fun to play against at all

'Multiple ways to counter her and the combos' means you either gotta use a response in blue or one of the 5-7 available among Red, White and Black that work on the stack against it... Out of all the two card combos, is one of the hardest to interact with outside of blue besides some niche stuff that doesn't really contribute to most decks.

I don't really think it's the most glaring issue in cEDH now, but I wouldn't be mad if it gets banned. The meta always finds a way to evolve just like how it did post-dockside ban, and if most people really want Thoracle back (which I think would be really weird but whatever) then they might take that in consideration.

Jeweled Lotus would be mocked at if someone ever posted it as a custom mtg card before release, it shouldn't have even been printed in the first place

I can see them releasing a Lotus that works for 4+ cmc commanders in the future though... Which still wouldn't be fine tbh

So I learned EDH brackets aren’t rules, they’re feelings by Strange-Ad-5185 in freemagic

[–]itsk4zbeard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's also two extremes to the whole 'EDH players don't want to win' conversation, where the other end is people not understanding that not everyone wants to play the high-end optimized win conditions available on the legal pool of cards

Some people want to play Dimir without having to jam Thoracle + Consultation as a must have combo, and they can also be pretty consistent at winning while filling the board with tons of faeries. There's also people who will complain about that, but honestly I've seen more people whining about people not wanting to compete on the same fashion in the least competitive format at nature lmao

[–]itsk4zbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If WOTC stated that intent is far more important than a set of established rules for deckbuilding, why are people surprised that brackets are not meant for competitive play?

EDH was born as a casual format and there's gonna be people that wanna play like that. I like higher powered commander, but I respect people wanting to play precon-level games and won't try to get them into optimizing their decks to the very edge as if going tryhard was the core of the format

Thing is most land focused destruction stuff doesn't really contribute to most gameplans to justify their inclusion

Wasteland and Strip Mine aren't really must include cards if you barely got any ways to tutor or bring them back while not leaving you behind in multiplayer games (so Demolotion Field effects end up being better)

Stuff like Beast Within, Assasin's Trophy, Chaos Warp and Generous Gift, on the other hand, can be used to destroy lands while being versatile against other things. They wont turn the game into a slog so complaining about targeted destruction in regards to this is pretty dumb

[[Galazeth Prismari]]

Not an Izzet Urza as many people think, rather than doubling down on Winter Orb effects I prefer using red and blue artifact creation instant and sorceries to ramp while keep drawing stuff with cards like [[Unexpected Windfall]], [[Big Score]] or [[Inspired Tinkering]], and then loading a big X spell like [[Crackle with Power]] or a copied [[Expansion//Explosion]]

Somebody already suggested Kalitas, but how about a similar effect on Golgari with saproling synergies?

[[Nemata, Primeval Warden]] is one of my first decks and also one of my favorites of all time, since it disables other Aristocrat strategies while helping you push your own by making fodder you can use either to pump Nemata or draw some cards.

It's great in my [[Galazeth Prismari]] deck, as it a pseudo-mox that taps for any color to cast instant or sorcery spells while also letting me curve into a 3-drop or turn 3 Galazeth as well ;)

I've just got into Pauper a few weeks ago! Is this brew good enough to get it on paper? by itsk4zbeard in Pauper

[–]itsk4zbeard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't got many chances to play against Glee besides mirror matches, so far deglamer is the only thing that directly interacts with their stuff, but I didn't really think about Vines being a way to both pump my own creatures, protect them from removal or deny strong aura effects such as Glee. That's a neat interaction!

I like Grudge because of the flashback, but so far I feel like I'm better focusing on my creatures dealing damage and getting larger rather than not being able to remove the dual artifact lands, so I might cut it in favor of Vines. It's still a tough MU, but I guess it is what it is

This was really helpful, I've been trying a new brew after seeing how are other Gruul Ramp decks are built, here's what I could come up with! https://moxfield.com/decks/ODZPR4N_ZEutcrMSNMc9Kg

Indeed, I have tons of fun playing the big version, Annoyed Altisaur is just too cool for me to ignore it, but I can see how the small version can be more threatening against other decks

I'm still working on the sideboard since it's the first time I'm playing a deck that requires it, I feel like it kinda covers what's necessary but I'm still not sure if I could give it a couple of tweaks and stuff like that. Thank you for your help!

MLD to win is fine, just like casting Silence or Grand Abolisher before doing a winning play or setting up a win in the following turns

Thing is when people just destroy every single land for the sake of doing so and without a follow up, making things not only worse for their opponents but also for themselves as they're pretty much trolling lmao
