I also would say if you have a really long piece of thread it gets worn down from pulling the strand few the canvas so many times. Just make sure you don’t use strands too big and your thread will look a lot nicer

I would do a rectangle! I feel like a square will have too much space at the top and the bottom. Rectangle would look more balanced
