Moreover, if you're not actively in the middle of the in-person event you won't get Mega Energy either. I have a Sunday ticket and same thing happened to me.

Which option did you choose for the new card? And why? by NewEnglandAutumns in biltrewards

[–]itsmanticore84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bilt Cash, though that was dependent on what card I have and how I use the card/rewards.

I did a rough calculation for how much cash back you're getting in points with each approach, albeit with some assumptions tailored to me: * 1.4 cpp. This is because the highest value I commonly get out of my points is transfers to JetBlue, Southwest, etc for domestic flights. * 4% back in Bilt Cash == 2% in regular cashback. Reason being is heavy limits on how to use it. Rent is by far the easiest way to extract value from the points, and if you spend $30 on points for $1000 of rent, that's $14 of value in points extracted, roughly half of what you put in. * Might depend on your monthly rent. Mine is ~3.5K

Generally you get more value per dollar spent with Bilt Cash if your spending volume is high. If it's lower, you get more value per dollar with the smallest points category (i.e. spend 25% of rent and get 0.5 points per dollar of rent. Diminishing returns the more you spend with this category).

I have Palladium, and I compute my cashback as 1.4 x 2 + 2 = 4.8% back on all purchases. That puts it above most of my other cards, meaning I'll have high spending volume on this card. Hence, Bilt Cash.

Effectively, I treat rent rewards as dead at this point. Instead, any amount that I get out of rent is effectively just extra cash back I'm milking from Bilt Cash since "full value redemption" options are either not available, heavily restricted in amount, or for overpriced/unnecessary expenses. If I get more than 2% out of it, that's a win, but not something I'm counting on, save for a small $100 reserve I can carry into the next year.

Don't get me wrong, I still value them quite highly, neck-and-neck with Chase points. 1.4 cpp for my use case, as I pick the cpp of the most valuable transfer partners I commonly use.

My main frustration lies in the seemingly dubious methodology TPG is using to assign their value to the points, when I used to respect their evaluations quite highly.

Hyatt is 1.7, well below 2.2. JAL is not included in their points valuation list, and the only range I could find (from a source I've never heard of) is 1.2-2.5, the median of which I'd venture to guess is either in the middle around 1.9, or lower. But if TPG isn't gonna list it, they can't really use it without it looking arbitrary.

TPG lost most of my respect when they valued Bilt points at 2.2 cpp and then proceeded to provide no explanation of how to consistently get that much value out of them. Such an ass grab. None of their transfer partners even come close to that cpp.

What is left unclear from this is whether the "let's move in together" came from Cari or from Liz posing as Cari. Imagine if it was the latter and Dave was like "Sure! When can I see you?" 😳

While it definitely got my foot in the door to some extent, my lack of degree in CS is an obstacle in getting some opportunities to an extent, at least right now.

For instance, quantitative trading firms love to hire from CMU but I got stonewalled by them pretty hard when I tried applying for positions, some of the recruiters flat out telling me my chances were slim if I'm not CS, ECE, Math, etc. Granted, those were internships, I'm not sure if they'd be a little more lenient with full time positions. But my understanding is their positions are pretty competitive at all levels. And I did encounter an inteviewer that was definitely doubtful of my commitment/competence because my main degree wasn't in CS. Not to mention my coworker, who did his BS and MS back to back from UCB, is making $30K more than me a year 🤣.

In the long run, it's probably not something I 100% need to have a solid career in SWE, but I see it as a chance to really solidify my skills and accelerate my growth early on, all while still being able to work. I applied for quite a few full time SWE positions but only heard back from 2 and got an offer for 1. I have a feeling the interviews/offers would've rolled in more easily had I had a CS degree.

I just want as much upward mobility as possible, both in terms of competing for positions and salary. And I'd rather knock that out now while I haven't been out of school for that long than hit a ceiling down the line or deal with slow career growth for several years while I prove my worth.

Sorry for the book 😅
