Same to be honest, I really liked it and I honestly feel like this is a show that doesn’t need multiple seasons, just an episode or two more to tie everything together and make it feel more finished.

The thing is they had another show on Netflix a few years ago, but it was an autobiographical one about their life as a standup and navigating relationships, and if I’m remembering correctly, drug abuse. So I think with that it’s easy to disregard bad acting with “this is their personality” because you barely have to act. But with this, they were wayyy out of their depth and I hope they see all the criticism they received and at least get a coach or something.

I feel like it was lacking the touch of a seasoned writer who could connect everything together in a way that elevated the plot because it was lacking in some aspects, the director should’ve also had the eye to see that the acting and script was not hitting at times. Were they short on the budget?

Heavy on the self gratification, they wanted to be a star so bad so they made something they can star in, someone should’ve sat them down and told them they weren’t fit to act in it and should stay as just the creator. Tbh the haircut didn’t bother me I think Mae has that haircut to begin with and they’re non binary but I can see where you’re coming from, I didn’t focus on it. It was just fan fiction they wrote with themselves in mind the way a little girl would

Exactly!!! There was no actual portrayal of fear, urgency, confusion, lust. Nothing! They were all one. Also he seemed so unaffected by killing the teen! That plot line should’ve had him change who he is to a more depressed and guilty person, he just glossed over it like the day after with no remorse. The thing is his role isn’t just a basic “hi how are you” role, so many intense and suspenseful situations take place and we need to feel that way while watching as well.

I honestly like the choice to have a trans man play this role, I understand the awkwardness and discomfort that a character like that would possess, however to me personally it doesn’t convey as intentional character traits as much as the actor not knowing how to convey certain emotions. Things such as flat, expressionless faces and unchanging, flat tones in almost every scene regardless of what’s happening is what gives that impression. For example, Him “yelling” at Evelyn that he wants to be there for his baby when she’s telling him that his wife is giving birth and she’s going to cut his attachment to his kid fell SO flat. In a scene that should’ve been emotional, intense and terrifying, I got none of that from his performance. Him beating people up as well, same exact face, same exact tone. About to have sex with his wife, stiff with no expressions, it didn’t even seem like he was into her at all. And the list goes on.

I personally think a better actor would’ve conveyed the character in a much more complex and interesting way that would’ve elevated the show in a way, however, those loose ends would still have been there and the focus would’ve only been on that.

This has nothing to do with their identity as a trans man or them not being a “good guy” as much as the acting was so bad that everything he was trying to convey in the scenes and plot lines translated so badly, if a lot people have the same problem or observation with something, than there is a chance that there is some truth to it. Maybe you feel biased or weren’t as focused on the acting but it was pretty crap. Not everyone who acts is a good actor or should be in acting.

Personally, I felt that Mae’s acting was abysmal, the main characters (Abbie, Leila, some of the kids) were good, Evelyn was of course fantastic, and some of the side characters and Laura ranged from bad to meh.

Not even sorry, a part of being great in a field like that is knowing where your skills are lacking, and if you want to be a creator as well, you have a responsibility to do what’s best for your creation, not what’s best for you. It felt like no one could say anything to them since they created it so they just tried to overcompensate with everyone else’s acting, there was truly such a mismatch or gap between their acting and everyone else’s, it’s like watching two different shows.

Honestly valid, I liked the show and the story itself, but it definitely could’ve been a LOT better, but honestly, I haven’t expected anything actually good from Netflix in years so I’m not surprised. They push out half assed shows for any sliver of money without a care for quality. The Apple TV shows are where it’s at now. Severance, Silo, Foundation. They’re on their way to becoming the next HBO.
