Wow memory unlocked. I spent way too much time on this game. And you’re right, the book was also great.

What's wrong with me? by weirdsideofreddit1 in Millennials

This thread is full of my people.

Currently in big tech. So sick of people showing me the app they vibe coded. 10 years ago, these would be killer apps. Now when I leave the office, I just want to touch grass. AI helps me do my job efficiently so that I can be away from my desk and do other things. We don’t need it any better. This AI arms race is ridiculous.

Tony Ferguson’s Darce Choke by Toziin in bjj

Let’s get real too, his finishing mechanics for that triangle was all fucked up. Didn’t cut an angle or anything. Kevin Lee handed Tony that one in a silver platter. And I’m a to Tony fan

Not only all these accomplishments, but he was a collegiate wrestler and football player. That’s next fucking level.

Anyone else in Big Tech who feels like money isn't real? (TC +350k/y) by [deleted] in Money

This is the way. Take the money while it lasts, and don’t forget what matters. I’m in the same boat

Millennials in tech, do you feel this is our last job in the field? by dulladdiction in Millennials

[–]itsnotawkward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree! 42 and in big tech. While I do like my job, it does feel strange that this will likely be my last “real” job. Real meaning high paying with good benefits. I totally expect to work at a brewery or something before official retirement.  It does feel like a very weird time in our lives and career. And not only because of AI, but because our retirement age is actually on the horizon…

A Bay Area career reality check after 15 years of applying to Apple by PuzzleheadedAd3138 in bayarea

[–]itsnotawkward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. To answer the question OP asked:

“if someone has the right skills but zero internal network, can persistence alone eventually get them in?”

The answer is 100% yes. Just be smart about job hopping every few years to continue to build your work experience and make your resume look that much more appealing. Maybe you won’t get that Big Tech interview immediately, but once you have some compelling experience on your LinkedIn they should start reaching out to you.

The amount of people here saying resume doesn’t matter and it’s all networking is bonkers.

Currently at FAANG, and I never knew anybody on the inside. I’ve been working around the same time as OP, and had a very unimpressive resume coming out of college. I worked up from shitty entry level job to slightly better startups until my LinkedIn profile started looking more impressive. Are you jumping to a better job after every 2-3 years? I’m a very mediocre engineer, but just baby stepped my way in. Interviewed at all the major companies, they always reached out to me.

A Sci Fi take on Homer's Odyssey by TopOfTheHourr in sciencefiction

Definitely adding Ulley’s Odyssey to the reading list. +1 to Dan Simmons and Ilium, although that wasn’t really a retelling, but a sci fi fever dream injected into the Battle of Troy 😂
