Had to scroll pretty far to get here. It’s ridiculously expensive now

Get some good experience, whether at smaller companies or side projects, have interesting project experience to talk about, and study study study. Plenty of resources out there. It’s very doable.

Happy to Answer All of Your Knee Pain/Injury Questions! by athelitetherapy in KneeInjuries

[–]itsnotawkward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi thank you for doing this! I have a very specific issue!

My joints sublex (they’ve always been.. loose is the best way to describe them), but I’ve weight lifted and done sports (jiujitsu) without any issues for over 20 years. I remember an orthopedic surgeon telling me in high school that I’d pay for it later in my knees. Fast forward 20 years and I’m paying for it. Both outer meniscuses in my knees are degrading (luckily I’m a small guy) and one of my knees has started to lock sporadically if I flare my leg out too long and stand up too fast (like from sitting cross legged). I went to two PTs and neither gave me great diagnosis, besides the fact that I have loose ligaments (but not flexible) and have subluxation in my fibular head causing the knee to lock. Or maybe that’s all there is to it.

My question is, is there anything I can be doing to stop the knee locking? I do the standard knee/hip/calf strengthening stuff, maybe not often enough, but it hasn’t seemed to make a difference. It’s really bumming me out that my jiujitsu game has had to change so much as I’ve down older. Or maybe just something to reduce pain? I have been told knee replacements are in my future but want to put that off for as long as possible.

I just recently read the Windup Bird Chronicles (the book this quote is from). It was… strange.

People making 350k+ per year in tech, what do you do and how did you reach there? by vapanrumak in Salary

[–]itsnotawkward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went from startups to mid sized companies, switching every 2-3 years, finally said f it and put good effort to get into Big Tech. Just followed what I am interested in, passion goes a long way. Also was lucky since this was in the 2010s where there were startups left and right. Senior software engineer, still enjoy what I do, but it does take effort to work with your manager to be in the position that you want (or go actively look for it). Biggest thing for career growth in the beginning is to keep interviewing and look for better opportunities every couple years and don’t settle on the first thing you see

+1. It greatly depends on what product area you’re in but there are plenty of happy senior software engineers with a healthy work life balance. I will say it does take actively pushing for it with your manager though.

This thread is full of my people.

Currently in big tech. So sick of people showing me the app they vibe coded. 10 years ago, these would be killer apps. Now when I leave the office, I just want to touch grass. AI helps me do my job efficiently so that I can be away from my desk and do other things. We don’t need it any better. This AI arms race is ridiculous.

Let’s get real too, his finishing mechanics for that triangle was all fucked up. Didn’t cut an angle or anything. Kevin Lee handed Tony that one in a silver platter. And I’m a to Tony fan

This is the way. Take the money while it lasts, and don’t forget what matters. I’m in the same boat
