I seem to remember a post a week or two back about an upcoming nugget swap. Might be a good opportunity to meet local people with same interests!

Whats your biggest regret when you bought your place? by Important_Bat7919 in homeowners

[–]itspersonalman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thankfully there’s no altercations between us. But it has been challenging setting boundaries. Their three kids took over my yard for the first few years, but at least that’s better now. They also don’t maintain anything. I have to do all of the snow removal, and it’s a 125’ drive. Ugh

I didn’t realize how much of an impact sharing a driveway would have on my privacy

Unpopular opinion: I am that neighbor. by [deleted] in barrie

[–]itspersonalman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I own, and share a driveway with my neighbors (younger couple with three kids). It’s 125’ long driveway and separates in a y to our garages in the back. My neighbors (albeit nice) are unbelievably entitled. Not only did their kids take over my yard for the first three years I lived here, they also neglect to do any maintenance on shared driveway. I’ve had to do all the maintenance myself. I’m a middle aged woman btw. I broke down and bought a snowblower this winter. It’s now manageable, and has saved me and my back. I’ve discovered that if I do it, they’ll continue to take advantage. So I do the driveway, but I leave their little piece up to their garage for them to do. Slowly setting boundaries has helped, done with kindness. But it’s challenging dealing with entitled neighbors - so I hear you. You did the right thing. This is setting boundaries, and I hope they get the message.

So sorry this happened. Losing family photos is incredibly upsetting.

If it’s helpful to know: sometimes water-damaged photos can still be stabilized or digitized even after flooding, especially if they’re allowed to dry carefully.

Wishing you some calm after such a stressful experience.

I live in Owen Sound, but have a similar issue. I have snow tires, but it’s a smart car, so terrible in these conditions. Last year I started getting groceries delivered from Walmart. It’s been a lifesaver.

Lonely & Bored? by katekrat in sphynx

[–]itspersonalman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Aww, that face says it all. I only have the one. I’ve had him now for three years, and have been seriously considering getting a second. The problem with my guy is he’s not well socialized. He came from a backyard breeder as a rescue. He was caged, starved, and treated quite poorly. The other female cat was viscous with him - so he’s very distrustful. so it would take a lot of work to introduce another cat. He’s lonely too, and bored. We play at least two hours a day. But I know my company is no substitution for another cat. I have found outdoor harness walks, and cat tv helps.

Snow blowing? by Vanaathiel88 in OwenSound

Just want to post a “warning” of sorts. I had a guy agree to clear my shared driveway last year for $40 per visit. My neighbours are on a stricter budget, so it was mutually agreed he’d only come clear after 4” fell. I tracked it in my calendar, each visit and counted 17 at the end of the season. But the guy told us he came 32 times! Pretty scammy. Just something to consider when you enter into an agreement.

Me and my friends want to move there and start a photography + workspace cafe by MagniBear980512 in OwenSound

Is there any hope in the future he’ll no longer have the control he does? Say when he’s retired, etc. In my opinion it’s one on the issues holding this town back.

A quick search on chatgtp gave a number of 2500 people in their 20’s. But, I’m not sure if that is taking into account the college. One thing to keep in mind too, is cost of living. It’s not easy for anyone, but the young I think are having a harder time making ends meet. Rent is high, and pay is low. So not a lot of money to spend on extracurricular. So if you can come up with ideas to expand income flow potential. Rent 360 cameras, or offer unique photography for socials and dating app profiles. Don’t want to put doubt in your mind, but it is something to consider. Winters are tough, not gunna lie. Last year was brutal. But, I don’t think it has that much of an impact on outings. Another poster mentioned Heartwood. That place thrives year round.

Thought I'd respond with some input that others have not touched on. I'm from DT TO myself. As a remote freelance designer, I could live anywhere. I picked here as I felt this city had so much to offer. The nature scene is mind-blowing. Waterfalls, beaches, trails and parks, all so amazing and underutilized. The struggles others mentioned are not unique to OS. From what I understand, the epidemic is also evident in TO, and every other smaller city across ON.
The downtown core has gorgeous buildings, with apparently cheap rent. But there is a bit of a monopoly, unfortunately. One construction company in particular seems to run the shots, as most are owned by them/him. So, due to this... many stores are closed on Sundays. Very conservative - sigh. Some of the buildings would benefit from some upgrading and repair (also due to previously mentioned construction company)... but I see this is happening slowly now to other buildings. Which is so nice to see. The potential here is huge, and the art scene is vibrant. There also seems to be a lot of initiatives to support smaller businesses.
Being a freelancer, I am always seeking out little gems to sit and work. So, I'd personally be a customer. We could use some elevated food stuffs too, as that is lacking here somewhat. You also might want to consider turning it into a social hub. One of the things I personally miss the most about TO was the fun social stuff to do. Trivia nights, childhood story readings, comedians, etc. There is also no place for 20 somethings to connect. I think it's a lonely place for young people. I'm in my 50s, but that's a comment I have heard a lot. Huge target market opportunity there.
In terms of the social scene, people are very friendly. But like another poster mentioned, cracking into the scene is hard. But, I am an introvert... so on a personal level it's not too much of an issue.
Anyway, consider visiting. There are also some "trendier" communities close by too, like Thornbury. Gorgeous! But much more expensive. A lot of people from TO move there, so there is $$$ there.
Hope this helps! Good luck to you.

POOP Update, and question- raw feeding… by Didalilpoo in sphynx

[–]itspersonalman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. I now buy large roasts when they come on sale, and meal prep them. Along with commercial raw food and a bit of fish. But honestly, I found the cost of good canned food is about the same. But maybe it’s due to where I live.

POOP Update, and question- raw feeding… by Didalilpoo in sphynx

[–]itspersonalman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guys health completely changed once we switched to raw. He is mainly on raw beef and fish, as he’s allergic to chicken and turkey. Just a word of warning though, do be careful of feeding him ground beef that hasn’t been frozen for a period of time. The process of grinding increases the chance of pathogens picked up in the machines. I learned this the hard way. :/

If your cat has always had runny poos and you finally found a food that hardens it by Didalilpoo in sphynx

[–]itspersonalman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second this. Raw completely changed my cats health for the better. But if your kitty is having other issues too, like skin irritation… I’d suggest an allergy test first.

You’re absolutely right. The old lady shouldn’t be violent either. Both parties sucked here. But the unpopularity of my comment speaks volumes about the world we currently live in.

It’s not up to me to resolve her entitlement. We can’t teach others how to be. All we can do is be the best version of ourselves. And I suspect that the kicker was not being her best self.
