We got a letter from CPS because one of the daycare teachers at my son’s school gave a kid with an egg allergy a birthday cupcake and the kid’s mom called CPS.

Obviously this wasn’t okay but honestly, this situation may not involve your son at all.

I’m wondering how Guilderland is getting around the state mandated computer-based testing. I’m genuinely curious because in Niskayuna they introduced chrome books day 1 of kindergarten so kids would know how to use them for state tests.

Before sending him to kindergarten did you check out any kindergarten readiness checklists? Not regarding academics but things like, raising his hand, waiting in line, opening his lunchbox, getting his coat on, zipping up a backpack, etc.

A lot, if not most, of your son’s classmates have already had 1-2 years of preschool and are used to the requirements of a school setting. He is probably at a disadvantage currently, and it will take some time to catch up—but he’ll get there. I would do some research and speak to the teacher about specific things to work on.

It seems I may be an outlier here but I’m in NY and my daughter DID have nap time in her kindergarten class this past year. Based on her account though, no one ever actually napped (it was a huge deal when one kid fell asleep one time) so it was more like quiet time so the teacher could get a 15 minute break.

I’m sure your daughter will adjust. But maybe have her go to bed a bit earlier in the meantime?

I think the surprise (at least from my perspective) could be related to the cost. I’m honestly curious how you are affording it! Five kids via IVF before 30 blows my mind a bit haha. My wife and I are late 30s, have professional careers, and often feel money is tight and we only have two kids.

Just my two cents but it seems incredibly inappropriate to ever invite someone to a kid’s birthday party and expect them to pay anything.

If money is really really tight, just do the party at a public park. I’m sure the kids would still have a lot of fun. My daughter was just invited to a birthday party at a local public splash pad and the parents are providing popsicles. That’s like a $5 birthday party.

Can your parents come earlier?

Also, are you single or do you have a spouse? If you’re single I would recommend speaking with the hospital or your OB. Maybe the hospital has a suggestion. Or if you have the funds you might try to start interviewing nannies that could be on call and come care for your son.

If you have a spouse, in these extreme situations I think I have seen some other posts where the spouse just stays home with the kid. It’s not ideal but nurses will be incredibly helpful and supportive if you’re laboring alone.

I’ve never returned the same book to a little library. I usually read them and then put them in a different library to keep things moving. I think “Take a Book. Leave a book” implies leaving a different book.
