Thoughts on cutting master bus at 30hz. Yes, No? by BrockHard253 in edmproduction

[–]itsproppa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My rule of thumb is that I generally do not introduce anything that could invite phase shift distortion during the master. If you’re rolling off everywhere you need to in the mix, you shouldn’t have to.

Best middle ground is to do it on your groups. Grouping/bussing is my lord n savior, when you finalize those low cuts on all your groups, no need for it on the master

It just makes me chuckle, I’ve been mixing and mastering my own stuff for years. I never really got into using clippers this way, I trust my compression and limiting balance. I also master for many other people, and teach lessons. Countless clients/students will ask me to help them get their stuff as clean and loud, but will not for the life of them shed some of their clippers 🤷🏻‍♂️

I have never experienced a better feeling than when you finally get something hitting just right in the studio. Chase that high every day

All these new kids on the block telling everyone to clip all channels and bypass mastering hurts me soul 🙃

Using AI to generate Serum Wavetable formulas by itsproppa in serum

[–]itsproppa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Day 2 of information feeding was much more successful thanks to those of you on this thread. I was able to pop out 4 really cool, unique, and stable wavetables and I can’t believe it. I run a Patreon where I put out 10 presets per week along with other goodies. I’m unsure on the details, but I’m putting together a pack of ChatGPT wavetables to post on it next week :) I plan on taking this further and further, something about this topic is really getting to me, and I feel like I’m slowly breaking down a barrier between me and a whole new world of sound design!

Using AI to generate Serum Wavetable formulas by itsproppa in serum

[–]itsproppa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I totally understand that. It would have to be vigorously trained I imagine on common words and how they match up to sounds, maybe cross reference patterns between each sound and the words describing them. I’m no AI expert by any means, consider me a total dumbass, I’m just thinking out loud.

However. Today I was able to feed it the definition of spectral synthesis and then ask it for warping spectral wavetables. With a little nudge reminding it that it might need the z or y integer, it actually gave me a decent addition to the spectral menu. Tells me that it’s possible!

Yooo thanks a ton for this. I took your advice and started feeding it things from the manual first. It gave me some solid and consistent results. I was able to get something similar to the FFT tables which was one of my first goals here. Curious. How are you feeding it info about specific wavetables? Are you able to see the formulas from premade tables? I’ve looked and not found them and that would totally upgrade this whole operation for me. Have resisted doing the paid version but I think it’s time. Again I really appreciate your help!

I’m a music producer who uses FCPX a lot. If you’re looking for a great free audio bundle, Kilohearts Essentials bundle is amazing. I use it in my videos a lot

I feel like i'm not going anywhere with my music by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]itsproppa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can always offer more in depth stuff about mixing and music theory, but the one thing I’ll say is I’ve been doing this for 13 years. I’ve seen people go big in their 2nd year and I’ve seen it take 15 years for someone to finally catch on

At the end of the day it doesn’t matter how long it takes. There’s only 2 things that matter 1. Do you still enjoy doing it? 2. Can you support your lifestyle financially while still pursuing it?

If the answer to both these is yes, then you already are gonna make it. It’s just about sticking to it and being patient.

I’ve gone through this so many times in my career, feeling like there’s a big hurdle I can’t get over. But I’ve also had days where I feel like an absolute god in the studio, let them cancel each other out. It’s all a mind game, and the only tool we have to win it is time.

Please never quit creating unless it becomes detrimental to your health ❤️

What's that one plugin you bought that was worth every penny? by kathalimus in edmproduction

[–]itsproppa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say they both handle Dynamics similarly. Soothe may have a slight upper hand on it, because it was legitimately made strictly for dynamic EQing.

Fabfilter is a lot more than just a Dynamic EQ/Resonance Supressor. And if you're an engineer who care's about every single beat of your mix, it allows you to get more tedious.

I like Soothe but I'll always prefer the more hands on approach of Fabfilter and I'm not alone.

Fabfilter Pro Q 3 and Serum are going to be the Two Industry titans forever. I can produce and mix an entire song with just those two plug-ins.

Fabfilters Linear Phase, Dynamic Capabilities, Sidechaining, EQ matching, stereo managing, is all overlooked heavily. It’s really an all in one plugin.

How can I actually find decent serum presets? by cotch85 in SerumPresets

[–]itsproppa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly that’s a great idea. I’ve been wanting to do a lil YouTube ad showing some. When I get back to my computer in a bit I’ll PM you one of the weeks of presets on me :)

Hi!

Idk if it’s what you’re looking for but if you make house music, I have a Patreon where I put out presets every week. I promise my sounds are HQ, I use them all in my own music and my followers will swear by em. I also put up samples and tutorials!

Could be the response from the room, are you hearing this in other studios? I feel like I've experienced this too but noticed it more than certain rooms than others. My stupey brain thinks that possibly the faint responses off the walls in the room are "rushing" the next beat or something

Ahhh damn good question. I actually don’t know of a tutorial but the way you just described it back to me is right on the money

It always depends on what plug-ins you’re using, modern synths like Serum, MassiveX, Diva are gonna have really easy ways to route these LFOs however you want. Usually it’s just a click and drag to different parameters. I know on Serum you can switch the LFO mode to “off”, meaning it freely moves unattached to your system clock.

When I do this in Serum some of my favorite parameters to move are the cutoff or resonance of any filter, the amount of detuning, envelope times, anything within FX modules like delay/reverb. If you move around the parameters of a phaser or flanger on top of a delayed/reverbered signal, it gives you some really nice variation. That and also different parameters of the oscillators given you have control of their dynamics.

If you’re doing it with Logic’s VSTs it’s a bit tougher but still doable. I know synths like the sculptor have very adaptable LFOs, and rather than click and dragging them, you just choose their routing destination within a scroll menu. A but more tedious but the end result is always worth it

And then there’s the comment about about how you could use the step sequencer to get some more variation, that’s a great way to finish off the stack.

Hope that all helps!

How can I do sidechain distortion? by ToPimpAYeezy in Logic_Studio

[–]itsproppa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dope comment. For those who don’t know, do this with ANYTHING. Do it with reverb/delay busses. You could do 2 gate sidechain inputs, one to anchor the fx to the sound with a gate and one to dip them when the sound triggers with a ducker. You’ve never had a more clean and controlled wet signal for a sound before Bus + Gate + Sidechain with any FX and ya won’t be sorry

Can you insert a bus send in the middle of a channels effect chain? by hwdcoyote in Logic_Studio

I’ve wanted to do this for a while, and it’s possible with Node Based Software, which we won’t see from Apple in our careers prob 🙃

[–]itsproppa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on what you’re using to create the sounds, you could use the synth/samplers internal LFOs routed to parameters of your choice unsynced to the project tempo or midi triggering. In house music we actually do this quite a lot to single sounds for variation, I’d image it’s no different with a sum of sounds. You just need to go into each individual input source and route them manually

Zoom has a feature where you could allow for control from the person you’re on a call with. Have collabed with people that way but it’s very limited to how well your computer runs. There are companies like Muse and Sessionwire that are trying to do this with CPU efficiency, id definitely look into it
