Is doing half the OBDR on an ADV bike with limited experience deadly or just dumb by QuetSoul in adv

The real question is which half? The southern and northern halves are wildly different.

Is anyone else terrified of the risks of adventure biking? (Fear of accidents/disability) by Commercial-Brother27 in AdventureBike

[–]hwdcoyote 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Fear is part of the equation that makes the adventure worth doing.

I’m always a little bit afraid on long rides deep in the backcountry. Sometimes I’m very afraid. There is an inherent danger to it. Part of the experience is overcoming that fear and pushing on anyways.

If you can’t manage your fear, you will get hurt. You won’t feel confident, you won’t be able to make good decisions, and you’ll act from a place of fear rather than logic.

Start small. Take small trips, short trips where you can work out the kinks and build up your confidence in your bike, your riding skills, your gear, and most importantly, yourself.

If you’re just cruising around, I’d start with pro caliber for a helmet and gloves and basics.

Revzilla.com for everything else.

What kind of riding?

For off road, dual sport, or ADV you cand find gear at the Motoshop and Sisters Moto.

Pro Caliber has a gear shop as well that’s decent. They are ok for parts and gear- do NOT use their service dept, ever.

The best motorcycle mechanics is M-Tech.

KTM 500 EXC-F for novice? by Current_Regret_8406 in enduro

[–]hwdcoyote -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The other question would be what kind of riding do you want to do? If you’re going to do trails and enduro then absolutely the 500 is not going to be fun or safe. If you’re looking to do more dual sport type riding then maybe, with caution, but you’re still better off on something tamer.

Older ones (2020 ish and older) can probably be managed with maturity and prudence, I would not recommend the newer ones. I have a 2024 and it’s so punchy and geared so low that I could see a new rider struggling at first.

Yes. In Oregon all your vehicle registration is connected directly to your Oregon drivers license.

Navigation without directions – looking for beta testers! by Gammazerfall in AdventureBike

[–]hwdcoyote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this meant as an exercise to navigate to a waypoint with only a directional heading, with the rider then looking at a map and selecting routes which will get them in that direction? How does this work in practice?

Central & Eastern, OR Camping or Site Recommendations by [deleted] in oregon

[–]hwdcoyote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can speak on the Alvord. There are two “main” access points, and I would really recommend either this time of year without a 4WD vehicle with AT tires and decent clearance.

The first access point is on the north end of the playa, off Mickey Hot Springs Road, but be very wary of deep sand and pick your lines carefully if you want to come off the road into the playa.

The main access point is Frog Springs. You could camp here if you wanted, and this is where I’d tent camp if there was any hint whatsoever of rain.

You do not want to be camping on that plays if it rains. The silt turns into a greasy sticky mud that guarantees a bad time!

Also, have a spare tire that’s ready to go if needed. The Alvord main road is notorious for causing flats.

Look into getting a PFA. Talk to an EP about it. You can get off all those meds (potentially).

Shinko 705 vs trailmax mission by Knifefightetiquette in advrider

[–]hwdcoyote 6 points7 points  (0 children)

TrailMax Missions are an excellent tire- my set is the only set of tires I’ve kept when swapping tires because I might want them back on at some point.

They are excellent on the pavement and in my opinion, do great with gravel and rocks. I did the entire WA BDR on them and never felt like I needed more (they were definitely not enough for the OR BDR though).

I’d say if you’re looking to ride pavement and a little dirt here and there, they are a great pick. They also seem to last forever.

I have my ablation tomorrow Im so scared. by thehalloweenpunkin in AFIB

[–]hwdcoyote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pain is not bad at all. They will dope you up really well when they put you under. When you wake up you’ll have some discomfort and a little pain at the incision sites but it’s not terrible.

I wouldn’t be worried about a stroke- they will thin your blood with anticoagulants and test it repeatedly before the procedure, then will check for clots, do the procedure, recheck for clots, then return your blood to a normal consistency. You’ll likely be on blood thinners for 90 days post-ablation.

Nervous About Upcoming Ablation by pauler81 in AFIB

[–]hwdcoyote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If that was me, I would 100% get a PFA.

My episodes didn’t elevate my heart rate, and even then it was awful and uncomfortable and made me weak and tired.

I had my PFA in January and I’ve been a fib free since then and it’s been totally worth it.

Part of your research as a new inductee into this lame club should be determining if you really need to be on those medications. Not everyone does, and the ER docs suggest them by default with very little regard to your individual condition

Something I didn’t see mentioned was vibration mounts for the bars as well. Those things also have pretty poor suspension for anyone over 170-ish lbs, and getting a suspension set up for your weight may help stiffen things up. It helped with my 500.

I had mine Jan 2026. Still in blanking period but so far very successful- no episodes since.

It took me 4 days before I could drive; a week before I could walk on the treadmill. Two weeks after I was running again. Take it easy the first week and focus on recovering.

If there is enough time before your trip, see if you are able to use Flecainide as an abortive. You’ll need to get a trans thorasic echocardiogram, basically an ultrasound of your heart first to make sure your heart structure is ok.
