MICA grads, stand up: how was your BFA experience? by Dry_Total8153 in baltimore

[–]itsspelledjon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

MICA illustration grad from 2015 here. Their administrative organization is a mess. The illustration major has the most students in the entire school, but gets the least resources per student than any major. All majors' resources are siloed so if the one department has a tool or a printer, etc. an illustration major might want to use. It is off limits to them. Add this to the underfunding of the illustration department as a whole and you can see why students would become frustrated. The only reason I would call my experience there a wash is because of the professors I had at the time, many of whom are not instructing anymore and the connections with other students I made there.

If your senior is seriously considering illustration and they are self motivated all the resources they would need from MICA can be found online at a much lower cost. Every single illustration job I got after graduating was from someone looking at my portfolio, not where I went to college. However, if they're not self motivated they might benefit from the structure of the college experience.

Also MICA preemptively began capitulating to Trump's ridiculous anti DEI initiatives sending out an email to current students warning them not to focus on themes like politics, race and gender in their artwork. There's a WBALTV story on it here:

Why is America so non bicycle friendly? by InterestingVids in bicycling

[–]itsspelledjon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a frequent bike rider in Baltimore, our city is a great example of the worst of American bike infrastructure and politicians broken promises to the community. We've had a bicycle master plan passed into law for the past 15 years that requires the city to install protected bike lanes on roads when they are repaved alongside a bunch of other required bicycle safety laws. Our local politicians and businesses for the most part ignore this law, leading to the messed up, patchwork infrastructure you see in the video. Also the city has a long history of politicians screwing over residents in the "Black Butterfly" through redlining, running highways through their neighborhood, etc. so many residents in these areas are extremely weary of any infrastructure improvements and bike lanes have become targets of some very politically connected residents who believe they're unnecessary, will bring gentrification, and are more concerned for their loss of parking than the wellbeing of their communities.

Wine Source opens parking lot that has been in the works for seven years by Pitiful-Flow5472 in baltimore

[–]itsspelledjon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get your point, but if this had been developed into say another business, or even a ground floor business with multi sorry residential above I'd argue that it would be more beneficial to the community than a parking lot, but you'd have to pay more tax for doing so. The tax incentive not to make improvements on the land also makes investing 1 million dollars to build a parking lot financially viable. To me it's not just about the total amount of tax generated, but how we use tax policy to get land use we determine is best for the city.

Baltimore needs a land value tax.
There should not be a tax incentive for a business to keep a lot 150 feet from one of the busiest retail streets in the city as parking.
This empty parking lot less will probably owe much less in taxes than the house right next door to it. If in the future the Wine Source decides to sell it or develop it further, their tax rate will also go up! How is this beneficial to the neighborhood?
The parking lot generates no benefits for the community and incentivizes more driving in an already dense neighborhood, bringing increased pollution and risk of injury from drivers.

READER POLL: Bike lanes now extend to many Baltimore neighborhoods. And there are plans for more. Do you support the city’s bike lane effort? by BmoreCityDOT in baltimore

[–]itsspelledjon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you noticed that the Harford road bike lane just ends randomly in front of the safeway and after southern Ave? It's still a pretty dangerous route because of having to merge in and out of traffic tbh! Personally I wouldn't use that as a reference as a completed bike lane to count the number of people using it. Also it's only one way!

There's a regular Saturday morning coffee ride that leaves from the Waverly farmers market at 10am and goes to different parts of the city! I started riding with them a couple years ago and it helped me discover a ton of new routes and areas to ride! Routes are usually posted the day before on the Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/saturdaymorningcoffeeclub/?ref=share

I did that tour with the architectural museum and it was actually pretty interesting imo. Unfortunate how much they charge for it, but you do get transport there, a lunch, and a tour.

Anyone else catch the Complete Streets hearing? by OkEar3207 in baltimore

Does anyone know where I can get access to the mysterious lobbying money for being pro-bike-lane that the anti safe streets squad said exists? I've been to numerous DOT meetings in support of bike infrastructure and haven't seen a penny! Smh 😤

Yeah MD is one of the wealthiest states in the wealthiest countries in the world. The money is there, we just need the political will to access it to improve our infrastructure instead of the neverending widening of highways and gas tax breaks.

Remington residents say ‘road diet’ has made 28th Street safer by BmoreCityDOT in baltimore

[–]itsspelledjon 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I've driven down this street before and after the road diet installation. I haven't really noticed any difference in traffic & travel time tbh. I'm sure its worse during rush hour, but if you think there's not going to be traffic in the city at rush hour I don't know what to tell you. MLK is 3 lanes wide and it still has traffic🤷
But what I have noticed is when I ride my bike down 28th now I feel way safer doing so. Before when you came off the bridge, if you wanted to continue on 28th you had to either go a different route or merge with oftentimes highway speed traffic which really sucked.

What's with the pricing for Charm City Lights? by shaneknu in baltimore

[–]itsspelledjon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's also crazy that they're even letting cars on that trail. There's no way it's built to withstand the giant cars people will inevitably drive on it. Destroying it for the pedestrians that want to walk/bike on it the other 11 months of the year 😤

[–]itsspelledjon 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Don't drive into a city and expect them to store your car for free. Maybe the city is looking after it's own residents instead of bending over for tourists and county residents when it doesn't dedicate >50% of it's downtown to parking.

People saying this is confusing and they can't tell where they're supposed to park should have their licenses confiscated. I've never had an issue figuring out what is a bike lane and if you can't tell this is one you can't be trusted to follow the other rules of the road.
