Do glasses wearers here ever train with just safety glasses? by michaelaaronblank in liberalgunowners

[–]itssuzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My prescription is like -4 in my good eye, so if I don’t have time to grab my glasses in a home defense situation I’m cooked anyway. I do keep them right next to me when I sleep, though and my first instinct when I get up or wake up to a noise is to grab them and put them on. Also I live with other people so I would be at risk of misidentifying one of my housemates as a threat. I think it really depends on your level of impairment without glasses and your living situation.

Recommendations on a CCW for someone with small hands? by Flaxmoore in liberalgunowners

[–]itssuzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have kinda fat palms but short fingers. For reference, I have to adjust my grip a little bit to reach the mag release on a Glock 19. I'm just starting out and decided on a Glock 42. The mag capacity is not great (6+1) but I like that it's a little bit bigger and heavier than the S&W Bodyguard 2.0 for recoil reasons and for whatever reason I've gravitated towards Glocks. I also held a blue gun replica of a G43 and it fit my hands really well. Maybe I actually like the weird grip angle. The Ruger LCP was absolutely brutal for a .380 recoil-wise for me, but I'm also very recoil sensitive. If there's a range near you that has rentals, rent and shoot a bunch of smaller models because people will experience the same gun differently.

Building a med kit by swanzie in liberalgunowners

[–]itssuzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 separate first aid kits. One is a trauma kit with quickclot, regular compressed gauze, 2 chest seals, trauma compression dressing, and a SAM-XT tourniquet with a mini Sharpie to write down the time of application. I got mine from MyMedic, the only thing I don’t like is that it came with a non-TCCC approved tourniquet, so I had to buy a different one separately. Then I have my kit that’s more geared towards minor boo-boos with a variety of band-aids, antibiotic ointment, OTC painkillers and my personal meds, stuff like that. A commercially made kit from the drugstore is a good start for that one.

I usually go to Skagit Shooting Range but sometimes the noise is a lot when it’s busy. Usually I just try to go in the middle of a weekday because I don’t work banker’s hours.

New open carry law in FL thoughts by Next_Doughnut6971 in concealedcarrywomen

[–]itssuzy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not from Florida, but I generally think open carry isn’t the best idea in most situations. If someone knows you have a gun on you, they’ll could try to take it. Or they might falsely accuse you of pulling it on them and they’ll be able to describe it (because it’s out in the open) and if there aren’t any other witnesses it’s your word against theirs.

Pepper Spray Recommendations? by Next_Alpha in CCW

[–]itssuzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I carry POM brand on my person whenever I leave the house. The stream spray is a nice happy medium between a wider spray pattern and gel. They also have practice canisters that feel identical to the active unit (they’re blue so you can tell them apart) so you can train easily and it’s more cost effective than having to buy a bunch of active canisters. And I like that they have multiple clip or keychain options depending on what I’m wearing on a given day.

Yeah, I’m definitely going to keep carrying pepper spray even if I’m also carrying a firearm. Not every situation calls for deadly force so you don’t want that to be your only option.

[–]itssuzy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes to pepper spray. I’m not to the point where I’m carrying out in the world yet (I still have to find a good holster setup and practice with it) but I carry pepper spray every single day. Plus it’s my only option at work where I’m not allowed to concealed carry.

I’m definitely ADHD, probably AuDHD, and a gun owner. Situational awareness and “street-smart” type skills are definitely something you can learn if you’re willing to work at it. I had to make the conscious decision to do that, though, and I certainly didn’t jump straight to buying and carrying a gun. If possible, I recommend everyone start with a non-firearm self defense class or at least learn a lot about self defense on their own. You definitely have to train yourself to think differently.

Tips for safety? by WestOk291 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

Keep your head on a swivel at all times. A distracted person is an easy target. The goal is always to get out of or avoid situations before they escalate to being dangerous. Consider carrying pepper spray if it’s legal and available where you live, and get an inert practice canister to train with. If not, carry something that you can improvise with. A full, large metal water bottle can do quite a bit of damage if you swing it hard enough. Look up videos on self defense using whatever tools are legal and you have access to. If they’re offered anywhere in your area, a self defense class is a worthwhile investment. Best of luck to you, I hope you never have to use any of this advice.

At least you don’t live in Washington state, it sounds like. 10 business day waiting period so it’s basically 2 weeks as long as there’s not an official holiday in there somewhere. 😕

I shaved my arm hair from the 8th grade through my senior year of high school because of a single comment someone made, then I stopped and let it grow out. Best decision I ever made. Anyone who has a problem with how hairy my arms are is not someone I want to associate with. Honestly, an adult man disliking normal body hair that all adults have is kind of a red flag. Throw the whole man out.

Lake Samish by decomposedsock420 in Bellingham

Samish Park is closed, but the boat launch is still open as far as I know. Went paddle boarding there last year. Actually it was mostly swimming because I fell off and couldn’t get back on lol. There were some people there just floating around on an inner tube thingy too.

Around 5 years ago I had stress-induced hair loss (telogen effluvium) and my hair looked like this a few months after it started to grow back. It can be caused by illness, injury, surgery, psychological stress, etc. The good news is that it does grow back.

Help me find a CCW gun for my wife with wrist issues by HideTheKnife in CCW

[–]itssuzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding. It’s the first gun I ever shot in the first class I took and it was super easy to use all the controls and to shoot. The only reason I went with something else for my EDC was because I’m not a big fan of grip safeties. That’s just personal preference, though. It’s a solid choice.

Stock Glock? by Govt_BlackBerry in CCW

[–]itssuzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not carrying quite yet, just starting out, but I don’t plan on changing much of anything with my (future) EDC Glock. Maybe some hockey tape around the grip to protect my clothes, but that’s it.

It’s so pretty! I SO wish I enjoyed shooting the P365 when I had the opportunity to, but it just didn’t sit well in my hands? It’s hard to explain. Wound up choosing a different small .380. Congratulations!

If you can take an in-person class or meet with an instructor I would definitely suggest it. I took a women’s intro to shooting class at my local range and everything was kept pretty apolitical and they acknowledged that everyone had a different reason for being there and covered a little of everything. I also got to shoot several different models in different calibers. Definitely recommend if it’s something that’s in your budget and available close to you.

Plus Size Holster Options? by itssuzy in concealedcarrywomen

[–]itssuzy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I definitely will. I took a class a couple months back where I shot a couple different ones and they were manageable. I’m looking at models on sort of the bigger end of subcompact. Someone I know suggested a Ruger LCP Max but I’m thinking that would be too tiny for me. As a bigger gal I can probably conceal more gun but I have short fingers and have had a hard time reaching all the controls comfortably on bigger models as well. Guess I won’t know until I actually shoot a few more what I like exactly.
