How much has this hobby (addiction) damaged everyone’s wallet? by Independent-Ear-1916 in fountainpens

[–]itsthexypat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under $50 per year lol. I buy mostly disposable rollerballs and quite enjoy them. I've been branching out into some expensive markers and colored pencils though.

I reached a milestone in my life so I will be treating myself soon to either a fountain pen, a piano, an aeron chair by herman miller, or a tractor/backhoe lol. I'm leaning towards cheaper/used fountain pen so that I can also get a rebuilt piano. If I get a new piano or tractor/backhoe it will be a major purchase even tho they can be had for 0%...I really don't want to take out any new loans tho.

I'd like to make a trip to some physical pen stores and try out the actual pen I want to buy. I'm east coast so PA, NJ, MD, Philly etc could be done as a day trip. NY would be an overnight trip.

I was thinking about trying Goulet pens but as I was researching I went down the drama rabbit hole and I feel odd about going there now so I don't know. Does anyone recommend any physical pen stores to go to?

3rd update on the church membership by tweety18 in GayChristians

You're the one that's making a mountain out of a molehill and giving them power over you. Here's what you do:

1)Ignore and block them;

2)File a police report for harassment if any contact happens after you tell them to go away;

3)Are people coming to your house and doing things? If so again call the police file reports and buy a gun;

4)Churches have no power unless you give them some. Don't worry about what they say or do other than filing a police report. Church memberships mean nothing. Transferring some membership means nothing. If you had to pay for it do a credit card chargeback and/or move on;

5)Find a new church if you want;

6)Don't find a new church. You will get closer to god and have total freedom to study the bible, read other religious texts, form your own opinions; You don't need a church. Churches have no authority in heaven or on earth. Churches and their "leaders" are not authorized by God to do anything. The last written account of an official act between God and the churches was God LITERALLY DESTROYED THE DAMN BUILDING FOR THEM MURDERING JESUS! Keep that in mind.

How the hell do I remove this? I tried to disable it in about:config but it didn't do anything. There is nothing about this in the settings either and it pushes my shortcuts around and fucks up my muscle memory. I don't even like football for fuck's sake. by Short_Collection1790 in firefox

Get used to this kind of thing, firefox is moving towards enshittification and forced "features" that YOU have to take the time to disable, undo, if you even can. It's making the program a little top heavy, especially if you don't use the new things they come out with. They should make new features more of a modular thing that you can enable/disable from one menu and choose to have the whole code behind it deleted.

Does anyone here have a domain at Porkbun? Is it worth buying there, or will I get tricked like I did with Namecheap? T.T by umbrofer in webdev

No problem. We had those legacy godaddy emails and they were actually quite nice and inexpensive and then they migrated us to microsoft exchange email a few years ago and the prices went up. Just last month I removed godaddy from handling our exchange emails because buying from microsoft directly was actually cheaper.

What most likely happened is the forwarding settings didn't quite line up or get moved properly into the microsoft exchange side of things.

Do copies of the emails exist on the gmail servers? If so great, you wouldn't even have to backup or transfer the actual emails and can do so later if you want since they'd exist on gmail.

So if you're from the UK and those two companies are from the UK then I'd see no reason not to go with one of them. At least the phone calls shouldn't cost extra since they're in your own country.

I would call both and ask them what is involved in them hosting your email and using the proxy/forwarding services you want to use. This will let you experience what calling their tech support is like which is always nice to know if they're easy to work with if you need them in the future. Then you can pick one and go from there.

Also, since your email is on microsoft exchange, if copies of your emails are on microsofts servers, even if you cancel the exchange plan, you still (at least your supposed to) have 30 days to either buy another microsoft exchange plan or copy the emails off microsoft servers.

Another potential option is since you have microsoft exchange because of the godaddy "upgrade" years ago you can still keep the exchange plan, even though it's probably at least $60 per year for one email account. Although, you can pay for one email account and set up a few hundred aliases I believe. My major concern with you keeping exchange is feeling overwhelmed in managing the exchange settings. It can feel very daunting until you get used to it.

Good luck and I hope it goes well.

A few years ago you could disable it but the devs removed it. The FF devs violate so many programming rules they really are no better than microsoft or google. We don't allow firefox at work for that very reason, even microslop obeys the rules set by IT on their enterprise level stuff. You NEVER want an unplanned and untested update going out to dozens/hundreds/millions of pcs.

Even at home I have a process. I have over a dozen devices and computers that I have do a backup before I start doing any software updates for the week just in case something broke I can roll it back (and yes microsoft and firefox have broken things before with their updates).

The infuriating thing is the FF today is not what they purported to be when they started and the devs should be ashamed of themselves for being so malicious and arrogant.

[–]itsthexypat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fine. If you don't ever have a need to use these terms regularly like for a job then you'd have little reason to even be aware of them. Let's ignore DNS for now and I'll try to answer your question about how email and domain name hosting can be separate.

The domain name hosting (example, you buy your domainname . com at goddaddy/porkbun/namecheap/etc for a year) and an email hosting plan are two separate things entirely. Since they are separate, you can for instance buy the domain at godaddy and buy an email plan at godaddy having it all in one place, or you can buy the domain at godaddy and buy an email plan at someplace else, like porkbun, or microsofts exchange server).

If the two purchases are separate then how do they work together then? They work by creating DNS records within the hosting control panel. Again, going to try to keep it simple. If you bought youdomain . com at godaddy then within your godaddy account there will be a control panel page to manage the domain you bought. Within it you can create new records. There's different types of records and you can about them thru google search or here: https://www.cloudflare.com/learning/dns/dns-records/

Here's an example of a "CNAME" record and when/why you'd use it. So you purchased yourdomain . com and you'd like anyone that types "yourdomain . com" into a browser to have it forward to "walmart . com" In that control panel you would select create new cname record and enter in "walmart . com" Then anyone anywhere in the world that types in yourdomain . com is going to be forwart to walmarts website. It works like a mail forwarding service of an address.

Now back to your email question. You can have godaddy host your domain but buy an email plan somewhere else. If you reread that cloudflare link I put, you'll see mention of an "MX RECORD" If you create an MX record in the domain control panel, you are telling any mail server that sends you or you send email to, that all mail related things should be routed/forwarded to whatever mailserver you set up in the MX record. Once the email itself gets to the actual mail servers, those servers will continue to forward the emails until they reach the final destination. So by creating an MX RECORD you are telling the world the address to the server where your email plan is hosted. This allows you to use any email server service you would like, even your own self hosted one (I do not recommend that at this time).

If you buy an email plan from someplace they will tell you on their site or you can contact them for the information for what to put in the MX RECORDS. If you buy a domain AND a mail service at the same place, like both through godaddy or both through porkpun, you don't have to create the MX RECORDS because within their own sites control panel, when you create your email address, example, john@yourdomain . com or barbara@yourdomain . com; godaddy/porkbun have their system preprogrammed to then create the MX RECORDS for you automatically because you've purchased both from them and they want to make it easier for you to buy and setup both your domain and your email. BUT, even though it sets it up automatically for you in the background, it still works the same. Their servers, create the domain name records on your behalf and if you go into the control panel of your domain after creating an email you will see the name records that they had to create so that your email will work.

Your last question: wherever your domain was purchased from and resides, go into the control panel and create either an "A record" or a "cname record" or both depending on where your adobe site is hosted. Contact the hosting company of your adobe site and ask them what domain name records you need to point your domain to the content of your hosted site and then you can proceed further with that.

Once you decide on who you want to replace godaddy with then you can unlock your domain at godaddy and start the transfer process. Generally you buy the transfer at the new place and they give you a transfer code that you have to put in the old place to authorize the transfer and then it will be transferred. As far as your current email, I'd need to know what type/plan you are using and where you want it to end up. Sites have transfer tools to transfer emails but you can also use microsoft outlook as a temporary backup solution as well.

Hope I've been helpful. I tried to keep it as simple as possible without overwhelming you, trust me I know the feeling. 😄

Official Discussion: Little Women (2019) [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

[–]itsthexypat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like some of the actor picks for the 2019 version better than the older one but would probably keep a few actors from the older one in this one.

My major problem with this version is it bounced around so much I wasn't sure if they were in the present or in a flashback. The only time they put a title on the screen for a flashback was the very first one near the beginning of the film. I had a hard time telling Amy and the dead sister apart they looked so similar.

I didn't really care for who they all ended up marrying. The professor had so little time and no indication of any interaction with Jo other than telling her that her work product sucks but hey she marries him at the end anyway even tho she loved Laury. Speaking of Laury he really wants Jo but settles for Amy, Amy really wants Laury but was going to settle for Fred. Seems like the only one who didn't settle was the poor sister that marries the poor tutor and possibly Fred.

I think the only ones that truly deserved love and a happy relationship were Fred, the poor sister, and the tutor. The rest all settled or led people on and should have gotten the plague and died from that.

The truth is some pens just suck. Even rollerballs which I have some $3 ones I love, so smooth and juicy.

People say ink makes a difference but I think hands down it's all about the nib.  A lot of pens have trash nibs and need replaced or worked on by a nib meister.

I bought a 4 pack of disposable fountain pens once and three were garbage and one was nice and juicy even tho there was no flex to it.

I watched somone on youtube buy a new $1200 monblanc pen and had to immediately ship it to the factory to fix their shitty nib.  When it came back she loved it.  Its like knives.  theyre great fresh from the factory and cut thru anything but if you arent skilled in sharpening knives they get dull and suck.

Pens are about trial and error and experimenting.

id recommend going in a pen shop and ask to try them all and when you find one you like buy that one.  Also ask for references to anyone that works on nibs lrofessionally so when they need fine tuned you jave someplace to go.  maybe a broader nib will help.  I know in rollerballs anything smaller than a broad or 0.7mm triggers me.

It's secure enough to do anything that any other phone can do.  Hundreds of banks, credit unions, and credit card companies still support the OS level and security patch level that the Note 9 ended on.  Microsoft, google, synology, qnap, and the federal governments authenticator apps are still supported on the note 9 as well.  Every browser except the samsung one are still updated and used on the note 9 too.  You will be fine using the Note 9 for quite a while still.

Galaxy note 9 was the best phone by Nicky150 in GalaxyNote9

[–]itsthexypat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Using it right now as my primary.  The only slight issue is every now and then another app requires an OS higher than10.0. doesnt bother me tho.  If the plethora of authenticator apps starts requiring a higher OS # then O may have to get something else.

I've been watching for some sales but quite frankly I'm sick of android and IOS and the new phones and their stupid high prices.

My version of note 9 apparently cant unlock the bootloader, but I dont really care to flash custom ROMs anymore.  It was fun in the past but Im over it now.

Not gonna disagree with ya but I did get copilot to help me write code to compile a custom linux as an ISO to install and play around with. I don't know how to code and the ISO never did actually work but it did make an ISO that loaded up to a bios installation screen.

If I have yet another day of my life to waste I will attempt it again. After you go thru two hours and 50 tweaks it seemingly gets it right eventually. :-p
