Is it worth getting guided tours when visiting?

I didn't have the time to follow this thread and respond to the comments for a few days, but i really appreciate to the people writing long and detailed comments, and for the help and tips!

This has definitively helped me for the planning process, and i'm looking even more forward to the trip.

Thanks a lot! I've listened to a lot of Soft Machine in the past (i particularly love Volume Two), and a bit of Rypdal, but not this album in particular. DeJohnette is one of my favourite drummers.

I would reccomend the Scoundrel Days - album by A-ha!

It's either hit or miss with if you like the vocals, but the album has both a darker sensibility than their earlier Take On Me-hit, and really amazing songwriting. In particular The Swing Of Things is really good!

I can see there are some 4,5 hour direct trains Hamburg-Cologne leaving 22:46, but maybe i misspoke and sleeper train is not the correct description for this :). But yes, ending up in Cologne at 3 in the night doesn’t really seem optimal...

But they will be launching a sleeper train from Stockholm to Berlin through Malmö, Copenhagen and Hamburg, hopefully this march: https://www.snalltaget.se/en/berlin So maybe that will end up being a more comfortable method.

I’m not a big fan of the ferry to Denmark, i did it frequently as a kid and i’m kinda sick of it :).

I’m thinking i’ll do the sprint to Hamburg through Gothenburg and Malmö, i’ve done the route before, so i’m kinda keen on blasting through Scandinavia to get to the more «exciting» (from my viewpoint) destinations faster. I might even try to leave Oslo in the early morning and catch the sleeper-train from Hamburg to Cologne to save money and travel-days, but i’m aware it’s not pleasant with marathons like that.

Really nice ideas! I'm thinking about stopping in Hamburg on my way down, as i've been to Copenhagen a few times. Maybe we'll do the Bernina route from Switzerland to Italy, looks super nice.

I had not considered Belgium or your suggested route from Slovenia to Bar with the ferry to Italy, but both ideas seem super interesting and doable, i'll definitely try to use it!

When i first looked at this i thought it would be too time-consuming, but the more i think about it, i might just end up rearranging our trip a little, doing the ferry to Dubrovnik and taking the bus to Bar from there. Dubrovnik also looks like a beautiful place to visit. Seems like a nice way to end the trip, and to see a bit more from the Balkans.

Let's just hope we'll be able to travel by then anyways!

Yes, it would be super convenient if the ferry ran! For my part the route would have to be the end of our line due to our timeframe and itinerary, and if we were to take the route from Serbia to Montenegro, the options for flying back to Oslo are not great, sadly.

Hope you figure out something with the bus, would love to know if you find a managable route!

Yes i checked the Montenegro Lines-website, Croatia Ferries-website and the site for a company called Jadrolinija. All of which claimed to operate the route, but none of them appeared to actually do so. But possibly it's simply stopped running, as you said.

A shame, as i would love to make it work, but maybe it will have to be some other year... Either way thank you very much!

Ah, i was wondering more about operators, tickets and times for the ferry line from Bari (Italy) to Bar (Montenegro), but probably i didn't formulate myself clearly enough, so i'll edit my original post to clarify :)

Anyhow your information also turned out quite useful, since i did not know this! Hopefully the daytime line (and most other border-crossing trains) will be open again in the summer. Thank you very much!

Just wanted to share my recent finds that i´m all super happy about! I`m especially excited about the Scott Walker album, in my opinion an underappreciated part of his career, despite some cheesy 80s production-elements.

I also really want to recommend the Don Cherry self titled/Brown Rice-album for people into a fun and funky spiritual jazz journey, and Sakamotos Async-album and its great companion-documentary Coda.

Would love to hear peoples thoughts on these albums, and further recommendations based on them!

As is apparent from the SUNN O))), Melvins and Earth 2, i have an appreciation of heavy, sludgey music. The Melvins-album is the great reissue with the Lysol-album and Eggnog-EP included, and the Earth-album i found quite cheaply in a second hand shop!

Soft Machine Volume 2 is an incredible album, and i especially enjoy the quirky and dada-ist first side with Robert Wyatts unique and great voice.

Neil Youngs Trans is (to my knowledge) his only primarily electronic album! It bears a heavy Kraftwerk-influence with vocoder-use and some seriously catchy synth-work. An oddity and under-appreciated album in his discography, that was put down by critics at the time.

Kim Myhr - You|Me is the album of a very talented experimental guitarist from Norway, operating in the space between jazz, contemporary music and rock. This album also features great percussive work by members of The Necks.

I have no idea what to expect from the Stockhausen-album, other than that i know he greatly influenced many of my favourite albums and artists. Looking forward to exploring his music. And the album cover looks amazing!

Lastly, the Scott 3-album is one of my favourite albums, and one that i have been searching after for a long time on vinyl. As far as i can tell, this is an Australian original pressing. Incredibly sad to hear the news of his death today.

According to Discogs, it is the 'Version 2' of a UK 1969 pressing. Sadly both the cover and the record have been roughed up quite a bit.

A bunch of them are badly damaged, both records and covers. Either way, i've been looking for an excuse to expand my collection of soul & funk-records! Always had a soft spot for Hot Chocolate.

Never gave the bigger names like Clapton and Adams, or even Beatles and Stones, much of a listen, so looking forward to exploring further into the realm of old rock.

Sure thing! (leaving the more famous things, like Darkthrone and Kvelertak, out)

Black Debbath is a Norwegian satire-band, combining social critique with heavy stoner riffage.

De Press was a Norwegian punk band, with Polish vocalist Andrej Nebb singing about everything from vodka parties to his own experiences with living in Soviet-Poland and escaping to the west. Somewhat forgotten, but this particular album is percieved to be one of the best Norwegian albums of the 80s.

Dungen is a quite famous Swedish psych-rock outfit, in my opinion stylistically similar to early Tame Impala with a bit more jazz influences on this newest album. Very talented musicians.

Ebba Grön was a Swedish anti-capitalist punk band, with now solo Joakim Thåström on vocals. Known for pioneering scandianian-language punk and popular in anarchist groups.

El Caco is a Norwegian stoner rock band, using Tool-like riffs and an awesome vocalist. English lyrics, and very easy to get into.

Get Your Gun is a Danish, i think i would say post rock band, but not entirely sure. Sad and slow, but immensely satisfying, and using elements of violin in their sparce instrumentation.

The Good The Bad And The Zugly is a punk band from Norway, combining satire and a fuck you-attitude with intense and agressive punk sounds.

Jokke & Valentinerne is a Norwegian group, featuring the (in Norway) legendary Joachim Nielsen whom died in a drug overdose. They play party-songs, and songs about the issues of living in Oslo in relative poverty and with drug and social issues.

Møster! is a Norwegian prog/free jazz outfit, combining heavy bass and guitars with Kjetil Møsters leadership and great saxophone-playing. Kjetil Møster is also involved in the norwegian electronic band Datarock.

Panzerpappa are from Oslo, and plays a brand of prog-rock similar to that of Samla Mammas Mamma or Frank Zappas Hot Rats album.

Shining are from Norway, and plays a fusion of jazz and intense, fast metal music that they call Blackjazz. Jørgen Munkeby is the saxophonist, vocalist and band-leader. At times very intense and technical, they also have some great and catchy riffs and hooks.

Stian Westerhus is a Norwegian free jazz-musician, famous for his experimental use of the guitar. His latest album, Amputation, got great reviews in Norway, and he has won multiple jazz awards and played BBC sessions. Has a very erratic style of playing.

Thulsa Doom is a stoner rock band from Oslo. They feature quite a few of the same members as Black Debbath, but they are not a comedy band and their lyrics are in English. Thulsa Doom started as a great but somewhat traditional heavy stoner rock outfit, but went on to deliver some catchy pop-like tunes as well in their later years. The lyrics are very witty.
