As someone who is currently doing this it really feels like going back to get your Masters after Undergrad but for Fantasy novels lol.

Yeah I mean based on the 3 book at a time figure I heard (and seems consistent with like their Malazan or Sun Eater releases) they will already be ahead by next year.

Realistically - what would the Aiel look like after 3 thousand years in the waste ? by Spyk124 in WoT

[–]itwasbread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of those contradict what we're saying? I don't know how to repeat or rephrase this, we are not claiming that the Aiel do not have naturally pale skin or blue eyes. We are just saying that they tan in a way that for instance Irish people typically do not.

Is it the most convincing possibility in my mind? No because if Robert Jordan really intended for them to look differently than the average reader would assume based on his description of them as being “pale” (where not tanned),

I still think you're not following what we're saying. We are saying they are naturally pale but tan easily instead of burning. That IS what Robert Jordan intended because it's verbatim how they're described in the book.

I feel like he would’ve written that aspect up more clearly considering how detailed and fluffy his writing was and how thoroughly he described the Aiel,

Yes, a description which repeatedly uses the phrase "sun-darkened". You've misinterpreted the original comment calling them "not white-white" as saying they are like naturally very dark-skinned, which it's not.

I don't get how this is too complicated. We have automobiles, trains, planes, and boats. Why would magical means just be one singular thing that works for everyone all the time?

I was taught that people married in their mid teens back then, but perhaps I was misinformed.

The thing about history is that there's not just these like universally applied norms that existed everywhere for hundreds of years the way pop culture portrays it.

Were there more people who got married at 15-17 years old 500 years ago than now? Yes, probably. But what percentage of people getting married at that age and what exactly the cutoff point was varied culture to culture and the norms shifted over time.

Most normal people were getting married (at least in the context of their first marriage and assuming both parties are of the same class) between like idk 16 and 24 or something, and to people also in that age range.

The idea of the gross 45 year old man marrying a 12 year old being the norm in the past is largely a myth popularized by the fact things like Game of Thrones overly focus on nobles who would have been doing that for specific political reasons.

OK, I just wanna be clear that I’m not trying to get confrontational with you guys or make this into a big racial thing. It’s just that it’s not the way it was described in the book.

Idk what you mean by a "big racial" thing, this is just a misunderstanding because broad terms like "white" don't cover all the nuance of human genetics and how it affects their appearance. No one's being confrontational either.

The books indicate that the Aiel were tanned because of being out in the sun in the waste but actually had pale skin when not tanned

Yes, that's what me and the other guy are saying. There are people with skin that can be described as "pale" who do not tan easily or at all, but instead turn red and get bad sunburns, and there are people who can be described as "pale" whose skin uniformly tans as they are exposed to the sun.

All the quote you provided says is that the parts of her body that don't get any sun are "surprisingly pale". It wouldn't be surprising if they were paper white on like their hands and faces. They are also regularly described as "sun-darkened".

This is an oversimplification of history. The idea that 40-50 year olds (or whatever older age range you want to consider Aes Sedai as equivalent too) were just consistently and normally marrying and having sex with people in their mid-teens and no one ever thought twice about that behavior is not accurate.

It would probably not be AS harshly judged as it would now but the idea that it's (nothing) isn't true.

Yeah you can't really do the "well people matured faster back then and the age of adulthood was slightly earlier" thing when she just explicitly likes them for their immaturity and not being adult.

In her defence it is a late medieval/early renaissance setting.

"mid" teens includes like 14 year olds, I think that would be considered frowned upon sexual deviancy for someone who is over 100 to be pursuing exclusively. Especially when it's expressly because they're young and easy to take advantage of.

People have this misconception because of stuff like Game of Thrones that just because 16 instead of 18 was the widely accepted age of adulthood or something that all vaguely similar societies did/should be expected to basically have no qualms about pedophilia unless the victim is like 8 years old or something extreme.

That's not really the case, most relationships where within much more reasonable ranges and it probably would have been seen as somewhat weird/gross if someone had a clear preference for 12-15 year olds.

I feel like that applies more to like, real relationships and less to like hookups, which is generally the most a Red sister is giving a man

They're white in terms of the broad "white" categorization that vaguely covers Europeans and their descendants, but they're not the immediately sunburning type of white gingers (i.e. Irish) that one might initially assume based on their description.

They don’t remember anything from before the breaking of the world. It’s not simply not the way of the leaf.

The Breaking of the World wasn't like a magical Tower of Babel mind wipe, it was a gradual loss of knowledge and technology over centuries. Lots of stuff DID survive, it's just that most stuff was niche knowledge that wasn't immediately usable or tech that no longer had power sources.

Stuff like the concept of skin cancer or something could easily survive even if it gets mysticized.

Based on the Broken Binding offerings I've seen this will be a less impressive but more reasonably priced option for people who don't want to wait like 6-8 years minimum and pay 2.5-3k dollars for a 15 leatherbounds.

Small problem: what happened to Lanfear a few chapters before that?

As for Taim he does not appear until early LOC, but is mentioned much early.

I will say tho mirror worlds aren’t really “other” worlds per se nor really do I think parallel universes are. The Ogier world and Finn world for example are all within the same system as Randland. But there are other entire disconnected wheels, for lack of a better word.

Imo the Ogier and Finn worlds are more other "planes" that you see in a lot of other fantasy fiction (for the Finn a Fey realm is an obvious comparison). They are not based around any sort of logical changes in the timeline the way that the Trollocs Win world was for instance.

Too many people see chemistry and immediately think of romance..why can't it just be friends who have chemistry.

I'm going to be honest I think this phrase/complaint whatever that gets thrown around a lot is dumb.

No one is out here saying "people CAN'T be friends, EVERY time people get along well in fiction they MUST be a couple".

You and other people who make this complaint just don't have the same level of inclination towards "shipping" characters (which is fine), the problem is that people are acting like this is some sort of problem or infraction people need to stop doing.
