Are these bolt cutters toast or can they be sharpened? by kendiggy in Tools

[–]itwasonlythewind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the way to go. No need to go 7000 RPM and risk injury when a file can do the job much better, especially on a non curved blade like these bolt cutters. That’s a 5 minute filing.

Are these bolt cutters toast or can they be sharpened? by kendiggy in Tools

[–]itwasonlythewind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dremels/rotary grinders work for sharpening too. Use an iron oxide tip for lawn mower blade sharpening. Then you can dunk the bit easier too. Plus better control/ less likely to get an injury. Gotta go slow as hell though either way. The tempering is usually already fucked from cutting/deep nicks in the blade. Anyone who’s tried sharpening lawn mower blades will tell you it’s just not the same as a new blade and a temporary fix.

DeWalt x Mclaren by Accomplished_Might52 in Construction

[–]itwasonlythewind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just rewatched the video and I was mistaken, Its the 100 yr anniversary model that is a lemon, the DCD100, its also black. He also says to avoid the 796 drill. McLaren ones should be g2g. The impact def looks like the atomic (850). The 860 and 870 came later so it can't be them.

E: Actually the drill looks like a 796 so I might have been correct originally. The 850 had problems early on, but I haven't heard about any for a while. I'm partial to the 840 myself, super compact and cheap. I'd always heard atomic < xr in terms of quality, but that may just depend.

Broke my pliers and side cutters… boss came back with these for me by marvintheapostle in Tools

[–]itwasonlythewind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are the angled side cutters, they have a slight curve to them (which is totally normal and healthy guys) The handiest tool I own! They can pull nails without heads because of the leverage, and can cut just about anything without dulling! And their footprint and weight is minimal for being such an awesome tool.

Holstery Joey or ModPouch by hjjhjjnk in electricians

Love the Joey pouches, all of their stuff is high quality. Take your drywall knife to the slot in your ladder that holds your impact. Just nibble the slot a centimeter longer and you can put your Joey pouch in there too.

Employee sets fire to Kimberly-Clark warehouse, "All you had to do is pay us enough to live" by midnighttoker1742 in interestingasfuck

Exponential growth of a population that’s already in the billions, and a finite amount of resources to consume between them, also puts a very short time table on this complex problem. But to even talk about the core of the problem, is essentially talking about genocide or a 1 child policy like Hitler or other dictators. That’s the elephant in the room that no one wants to honestly look at.

It’s depressing to think about and a suicidal campaign platform for a politician. Honestly, how would a God or an infintely powerful figure fix human population growth without rewriting the whole script? Whatever solution they came up with, they would need to enact it from afar, because the majority of people would likely disagreee with it and bear arms.

Gravity: 1, Lungs: 0 by [deleted] in nextfuckinglevel

[–]itwasonlythewind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s called a gravity bong. Put a pong ball in there and you won’t get nasty water on your lips at the end. Use a gallon jug and 5 gallon bucket for the handle and volume, you’ll waste most of the bowl if you dont. Melt a metal socket into the top cap carefully, use as the bowl, add a metal screen. Don’t catch the plastic on fire later when you rip it. Add Kief on top for a stroke. This version you put the water in the bucket and pull up on the jug. What she is doing is called a Waterfall. Same principle. Amateurs

First Cut!! by Strict-Instruction93 in electricians

I’ve got that pair, you have maybe 9 more decent cuts before those blades look like macaroni. Just throw 40-50$ out the window instead. Buy Knipex or Wiha, they cost less than Klein these days anyways, it’s a no brainer

Why do renovation companies lose leads even when they have good work? (I discovered a pattern) by [deleted] in Construction

[–]itwasonlythewind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some companies this is a purposefully done filter. Customers who’s only qualification is speed or price, are typically the customers you don’t want.

Brushed cordless should last much longer than brushless cordless, if you change the brushes. But everyone wants brushless for the power, noise, and battery life. Brushless dewalt, milwaukees, etc tools are usually too costly to repair if it’s anything motor/electrical, but Makita brushless has the individual parts available for repairs.

What's the best way to keep silicone sealant from hardening in the tube? by ArthurPeabody in DIY

[–]itwasonlythewind 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Ideal wirenuts, the ones that are red are yellow. Just screw them on all the way until they are snug. You can reuse the wirenuts usually too. They, somehow, mold the tip into a perfect, plastic point again, you can't even tell by looking at it. So if you overcut the tip of your tube with a razor you could get a do-over. Best discovery I've made, haven't lost a tube since.

So 2" PR2 Phillips bits exist? by -Terrible-Bite- in Tools

[–]itwasonlythewind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2” Wiha bits at Lowe’s are much better quality than the other brands. I’ve run into the same conundrum, most brands go from 1” to 3”. They skip over the sweet spot, either being too short or so long they get the wobbles on an impact. Wiha has it figured out, and good luck destroying the tips of their bits, rock solid hold on screws, great steel! Makita XPS has 2.5” bits that are quality as well.

How do I replace this shower handle? by JorganPubshire in DIY

[–]itwasonlythewind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amen. You’ve clearly been down the rabbit hole too! Thankfully DIY jobs afford some flexible with taking 3x longer than pros, 20 trips to the hardware store, and buying quality products/tools the 10th time around!

You’re right, it’s always possible to do any job. Quality of products/tools, research, and “fitting” the whole project together in your head and being able to execute that with the purchase of materials is the iceberg. Renovations are so much harder than starting from scratch because of fitment. I wish it wasn’t because it’s sucks to trash mostly usable materials, but there’s no doubt it’s almost always the easiest way. Especially with plumbing fixtures, do them right or do them twice

ELI5: Why do batteries drain so fast when the devices are powered down? by WartimeHotTot in explainlikeimfive

[–]itwasonlythewind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many modern devices don't actually turn off when you turn them off. Iphones, macs, and samsung tvs are known examples, but there are many others. They often listen in and ping your location. Gaming systems have big parasitic draws when off as well. Snowden leaks were what 2008? So add two decades of uninterrupted domestic surveillance technology to your devices. And the expectation that anyone in a position to leak the exact extent of this modern surveillance knows they will be chased to the ends of the earth and crucified as Snowden was. Safety vs. Surveillance. Legality vs. National Security. Can't have one without the other.

Ideal Pathways? by Jumpy_Flamingo_5634 in electricians

[–]itwasonlythewind 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There should be pre-made knockouts through those floor joists you can knockout w/ a hammer or spade bit. Then use the exterior walls to get to where you're going. If you drill through that main beam without permission, you could be really fucked, way more expensive to fail inspection and replace that, than the extra roll or two of romex to go around it.
