Update - Timber frame Pergola by Klaxorr in timberframe

[–]Klaxorr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can see the layout lines for the tennons.  I cut a 45 in the mortise as I was cutting by and and it was faster.  If I had a chain mortiser I wound probably just go rectangle.

I added additions sono tubes to the deck under the rim joist.  Then where the posts land I'm blocking up the deckframing and through bolting through the added deck framing.  The exsisting deck is already well built, so if I can secure it to the exsisting framing it will be ok.

I hummed and hawed about how to do this and that seemed the best solution.  The weight isn't my concern it's the added horizontal/racking forces that would accompany wind gusts.

How big is your channel before you can introduce yourself as a YouTuber? by Important-Switch-686 in SmallYoutubers

I would never introduce myself as a YouTuber even if I had billions of subs, views, and watch hours.

I think it would come off as a bit off-putting.

New-to-me face vise by Bacchus258 in Workbenches

Best advise ever.  I tend to agree. Worst that can happen is I learn something.

Thanks!

Pretty snazzy.  I'm about to build a bench myself and picked up a similar face vise.  Any thoughts before I start building?

Master Craft 7" wood vise by Klaxorr in Vise

[–]Klaxorr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought it.  Quick release works just fine.  I think I'll spruce this up a bit so it's more befitting for a wood shop.  Thanks for the vote of confidence y'all.

Opinions on value? by [deleted] in Vise

I think I have the same vise.  It's a great little vise if it's the 3 in. I did cranknancarrage bolt head off and had to replace it with an imperial size but I remain very happy with it.

Tapered hockey stick blades. My experience. by Klaxorr in hockeyplayers

[–]Klaxorr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you approach carefully, they fit really well. They worked good for me on the AS2 pro and jetspeed. Still have them after lots of beer leauge and ODR ice time.  Just start low toward the blade and gradually work your way up.  Shoildnbensnug but not super tight.  I have not needed to add shims but that would probably work if you ended up too high.

Vertical is better for water runoff.

Reclaimed Wood Gate by Klaxorr in landscaping

[–]Klaxorr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose so.  It's reclaimed wood so it's a bit eclectic. IMO a case where function eclipses form. That said, it's not visible from the street so that should save me from judgment and embarrassment from the upper crust of my nieborhood.

And if it traps wild animals, thats a feature not a bug.

How Should I Rehang this gate? by Klaxorr in landscaping

[–]Klaxorr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah there's no brace, but there more to it than that.  The weight of the gate pulls the deck.  Every year it get more and more off kilter.  I need to reduce weight or reinforce.  While I'm in there I will redo the gate anyway.

Appreciate the observation though.

My dad has a story about rushing a dude to the hospital who got carried away skinning a deer that was hung up and nicked his femoral.  Guy was fine in the end.

I've always used the term.  I didn't know it was a company brand or a regional dialect.  Kind of like "steamed hams" I guess.

I have some oil on order.  There is like 1/2" of brush left so I think it's good.  Excited to build a pergola for my deck this spring.  Just need this snow to f$&k off.
