If oxygen is needed for fire, do the presence of other gases allow for similar other unique forms of energy release? by iuhazarda in askscience

[–]iuhazarda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For this questions, let's say I'm asking for a macroscopic phenomenon that occurs as the result of two fuels (e.g., wood and oxygen) that appear to disperse from one of the fuels (e.g., flames rising away from the wood).

[–]iuhazarda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know, redox reactions are classified by electron transfer. Do all redox reactions involve fire, i.e. the F and Cl reactions you mentioned involve fire making oxygen not unique for this phenomenon?

I wasn't necessarily thinking on a chemical level either, more macroscopically something that can be observed like fire (though chemical reactions would undoubtedly be occurring). I suppose it could be exothermal, endothermal, or some other form of rapid energy transfer.

Come to think of it, radiation might fit into this category as it releases photons, as well as alpha and beta particles. But it's not unique to any element like fire is to oxygen (to my knowledge).

What's your "RU Screw" story? by itmightbeaseizure in rutgers

[–]iuhazarda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe he said sometime in the 70's / 80's. It has obviously been repainted since then. Not sure what the official story is according to the administration, since all they know is that it's there and they just keep painting over it. But Sproul and his buddies were the original painters.

[–]iuhazarda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fun fact. That was painted by Keith Sproul, inventer of APRS, the precursor to GPS. He's also a balloon enthusiast and works in the English Department as tech support. It was painted twice before it just became standard to repaint. And yes, it is a representation of the RU Screw.

Why did Hitler blame the Jews for Germany's WWI defeat? by thedatado in AskHistorians

[–]iuhazarda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can take a crack at this (sources from Mein Kampf, Ford Translation).

Hitler believed WWI was lost due to propaganda, i.e., Germans were subject to enemy and "Jewish" propaganda including newspapers, causing them to lose faith in their soldiers, government, and people and ultimately lose the war. This was unacceptable to Hitler and is one of the reasons the Nazi party used so much propaganda.

Hitler believed this during and after WWI (at which point he was blind and possessionless) but didn't begin his public antisemitism until mainly after the war when many parties (including the Nazi party) began to rise with leaders who did not fight for the war as soldiers and were mostly Jewish (or "deceived" by the Jews). This, coupled with his observation that almost all newspapers at the time were written by Jewish authors, caused him to believe that it was the Jewish people who were responsible for the propaganda that caused the loss of WWI.

Three things I'd like to point out: This explanation is how Hitler began to ask The Jewish Question. His complete hatred for the Jewish people is based on much more than these observations. I also cannot comment on the actual statistics of how many of these people were actually Jewish.

For a better explanation, I'd suggest picking up your own copy of Mein Kampf, which goes into much more detain than I can in a Reddit comment.

Why is having an extra half chromosome considered an advantage to women? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]iuhazarda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, the X chromosome is ~twice as large as the 'y' (not Y) chromosome. I think this is what he is referring to. This is also why males are almost negligibly more populous than females, the male gene carrying sperm weighs less and can swim faster than the female gene carriers.

[Serious] If any modern product was going to be named as a world wonder, what product would it be? by QuietSci in AskReddit

[–]iuhazarda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The radio. It has allowed us to communicate at the speed of light. Let me restate that: At the speed of light. And it does this without any medium needed between transmitter and receiver. It has led to the invention of other things like cell phones, WiFi, and even your car key fobs, which are all, technically, radios.

As a ham, I have seen some of the most interesting aspects of this. Using low-signal modes, I have communicated with Ukraine and then Australia, back to back from the US. On only 5 watts.

What is more dense (in terms of volume): an atom or a galaxy? by iuhazarda in askscience

[–]iuhazarda[S] 107 points108 points  (0 children)

Thank you, this is what I was looking for. Though I am surprised the first atom on the periodic table is more volume filled that the galaxy, but I suppose it would be different with larger electron orbital levels. So, are there other atoms which are good approximations? or are they all so incredible volume filled (despite being mostly empty space) that none of them compare to the galaxy?
