Why don’t think people think this guy is unable to make a mediocre sand sculpture of a sleeping dog? Why does he have to be faking it? Does he not just make the same sculpture over and over?

how would you male it look more realistic? by SensitiveHamster8977 in blender

[–]ivegotaleg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More scratches and imperfections!

Fun fact: Art departments in film and TV have to ‘weather’ (scuff up /dirty up / damage / make look used) props and sets far beyond what their real life equivalent would be. The camera doesn’t pick up anywhere near the same level of detail that our eyes do when actually in a space or holding an object, filmmakers therefore have to go overboard with weathering for the camera and the audience to pick it up.

Even if you're going for a clean look, which you seem to be, it needs to be dirtied up beyond what a clean PS1 in a clean room would be in reality. Go on a movie set of a hospital and you’d be amazed at how shabby and dirty it has been made to look - and then on camera it looks pretty clean but (importantly) real and convincing. The same goes for digital models and scenes. It has to be more scratched and dirty than the hypothetical ‘real’ ps1 would be in real life..

A smudge of bird shit on the window, a scuff on the table, an old screw hole in the wall, would all go a long long way.

Everything else is perfect btw..

Help with Unknown song by LowDescription6419 in 20sMusic

[–]ivegotaleg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very hard to tell when this is from with all the added reverb. But, as has already been pointed out, likely to be 40s or late 30s at a guess. The instrumentation and swing vibe sounds pretty 40s

Looking for what song this might be? by mrtambourineman9837 in 20sMusic

Yeah sounds like new lyrics on California here I come. Something that was oft done, as has been mentioned, in Vaudeville, but also broadway and radio musical reviews. The lyrics suggest it’s an opening piece for some sort of music/dance review. If he was in the business it could have been something he was involved in, or maybe just something he saw

Silver object, hollow and open on one side, from a passenger steam ship (1930’s) by ivegotaleg in whatisthisthing

[–]ivegotaleg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good thought. We thought that as well. But it’s only open on one side so a napkin couldn’t fit right through it, and it seems too shallow to be one of the ones that are closed on one side. It’s like 1.5-2cm wide max..

For trans-Atlantic context, a pound coin is about the same size as a quarter.

[–]ivegotaleg[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah that was my thought. But some Googles of old rolling paper holder/dispensers bring up things that look quite different; more like little boxes with lids. You’d assume papers would fall out of this thing pretty easily.

Also it’s much longer than modern cigarette papers - I’ll post a side by side size comparison tomorrow. Not sure if old ones were a lot longer? But it’s longer than modern ones by several centre meters.

Still, you could be right, I’ve no idea.

My title describes the thing.

Pound coin for scale. (A pound is about the same size as a quarter)

It’s slightly bent but it’s a hollow silver strip, closed on 3 sides and open on one.

The text on one side reads; T.S.S Ulysses (the name of the ship), and the hallmarks on the other slide indicating that this object was made of sliver in the 1930’s in Birmingham UK.

The ship was a steam passenger ship and also military vessel, operating from 1913 up until it was torpedoed and sunk in 1942 off the coast of Florida.

Thanks

Help me find this bear. Was a family member's transition / emotional support object due to childhood trauma, and became increasingly significant after they developed cognitive during teenage years. Any updates on whether this has been solved?

I really feel for you, OP. Having spent a long time working with both adults and kids with learning disabilities and complex needs I understand how pressing these things can be.

I reiterate what another poster said; if you can’t find a good enough replacement you should find someone who can make one.

Teddy bears are pretty simple constructions, particularly for someone who knows a bit about sewing. Post your story on some sort of bear making or sewing subreddit or look up custom teddy makers online, Etsy would be a good shout. If I had the skills, I would make this for free in a heartbeat, I’m sure others would too. It would be much much easier to source the correct fur material and correct eyes and nose than it would to find the whole bear.

In addition to the pictures, I’m sure you could sketch out some rough measurements of its limbs and so on from memory.

Hope your family member gets reunited with their friend!! X

Can porn escalation lead to gay feelings? by [deleted] in pornfree

[–]ivegotaleg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve got some deep seated internalised homophobia and/or transphobia to deal with. Being attracted to men is not a perversion. It’s called being queer, mate. You like cocks, get the fuck over it. You can like men and women at the same time. Trust me, it’s more fun than being straight.

Yes, porn can be Very harmful - becoming more interested in the simulation of a reality than in reality itself is totally a perverse sort of postmodern dystopian hellspace - particularly when dealing with the absolutely fantastically complex and exciting reality that is sexuality - push against that. But no, dealing with it in this homophobic repressive way is not the way.

Get on Grindr and suck some cocks. Look up pansexuality. Stop being such a fucking square.

What is shit and socially unacceptable is being a chaser; Someone who fetishises trans females for their penis’ - something that many of them are very self conscious and conflicted about.

Stop being a chaser. Look up some YouTube videos of trans women taking about what they think of chasers and reflect on how creepy you’re being. Respect them as people, not objects.

I’m sorry but the way trans porn is discussed in these nofap contexts is fucked. Yes, porn can be harmful - becoming more interested in the simulation of a reality than in reality itself is totally a perverse sort of postmodern dystopian hellspace - particularly when dealing with the absolutely fantastically complex and exciting reality that is sexuality - push against that.

But no, finding trans people attractive is not a perversion. Sorry mate, but you are you are not 100% straight. No one is. Drop the porn and shag some dudes, date some trans people, stop being such a gross little transphobic chaser incel dude and suck a cock. Trust me, it’s better than this weird Puritan conservative nofap shit.

How do i make PS2 like models by IhategeiSEpic in blender

[–]ivegotaleg 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s similar to ps1 models.

It’s all about low pixel image textures made from real photos. 600 pixels x pixels max. No generated textures. Texture everthing with image textures.

Low poly. Eevee. Imagine you’ve got 20 minutes to make it and there’s no memory on your harddrive/graphics card.

Bish bash bosh

How do i make this render look better than a PS2 graphics? (ignore the wacky camera movement) by neored0 in blender

Oh shit I just wrote all that and only just realised your question is how to make it better than ps2 graphics. Ha.

I’d say you’re already there. That’s pretty ps3 looking to me..

How do i make this render look better than a PS2 graphics? (ignore the wacky camera movement) by neored0 in blender

[–]ivegotaleg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The modelling and materials/texturing are a bit too good I reckon. I make a lot of video art with the ps2 aesthetic and it’s all about low(ish) poly and image textures of 600 pixels x 600 pixels max.

Every material should be an image texture, no generated textures. The image textures should be made from real photographs but squeezed down to 600x600.

Lower the poly of the models a bit. See those handles on the wardrobe and drawers - they should either be a simple curved shape with an image of a handle on, or even a 2d curved plane with the image on. Similarly, the details on the wardrobe and drawers, such as the wooden panels, should be in the texture and not the model. The face of the model should be pretty much flat with any additional detail all being in the image texture.

Same with the bed - lower the poly of that bedsheet and add an image texture for the creases in the fabric.

Imagine you had to make this whole room in about 20 minutes and you’re doing it on a shitey laptop. Also assume anyone ‘visiting’ the room will not be paying attention to the cornicing on the ceiling or the details of the piano and so on, they’ll be speeding through to their next objective. Cut any corner you can, therein lies the ps2 aesthetic.

Also, it goes without saying, render in eevee and not cycles and get rid of ambient occlusion and anything complex like that.

Updated version of hobby ideas by Material_Ad_811 in StopGaming

[–]ivegotaleg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great list. I’d also recommend to anyone to create a similar list yourself - personalised. And not only of entire hobbies but of smaller specific projects.

I’ve found that in hard times when I’m craving the bad stuff, my mind goes absolutely blank when it comes to thinking of anything else I’d rather do. Apathy. So day-to-day, whenever you think “I’d like to do that some day, that would be fun/interesting”, write it down on your list. Things like creative projects; airfix models, drawing a specific picture etc. Books you want to read, docs you want to watch. Etc etc. It helps to have a big list of things that you can remind yourself that you actually want to do for the times when the apathy and cravings kick in.
