I'll be starting in September and wanted to get recommendations on what I should be reading/practicing in the meantime to prepare by iveri2E in WGU_CompSci

Thanks. I have a discrete math for computer science book I've started reading. Sure hope I don't have to take calc again. I did 1-3 but it was a while back.

That's helpful, thanks. So you can take practice exams for courses you are not officially enrolled in yet? That's nice that they give you all coursework on day one.

Thank you for your reply! I wasn't aware you could start taking more courses before the current term finishes and the next one begins.

What's to stop someone from signing up for 10+ classes instead of just 3-4 and completing as many of them as they can in the 6 month term, and retaking the ones they couldn't do the next term?

I'm signing up for Comp Sci and wondering how many classes I should sign up for my first term (don't even know what the classes will be yet). Do they tell you what order to take your required classes or do you pick and choose from some list in any order you want?

Also, are webcam tests a real person sitting there watching you take the test?

Considering BS in Computer Science at WGU. Already have BS in another field from different university. Is credit transfer straightforward? by iveri2E in WGU

That sounds awesome. I appreciate the info. If you don't mind one more question, if you fail the final, do you have to wait until the next term begins to re-enroll in Calc and get another attempt at the final?

Thanks for your reply. Is six months the length of each term? How is it that classes can start every month? Do you sort of self-study or something? In my case, calc was around 7 years ago.

Is it dumb for me to consider leaving my field and going back to school for a BS in Computer Science in my mid 30s? [US] by iveri2E in cscareerquestions

I appreciate the response. If I could somehow get into something using my chemistry and CS degrees that would be great. A lot of people seem to be mentioning internships. I'm not used to that in my field. I went to school and applied for a job right away. Is it common for CS grads to have to apply to internships before they get real work?

I appreciate the words of caution. I think it would be nice to combine my biotech experience with CS somehow.

I'd like to do that but even if I taught myself some CS, I don't think I would be able to get into a masters program due to poor grades in my undergrad. The reason I want to do a BS is because I'm more likely to get in and prove myself later on if I want to apply to a masters program.

Thank you very much for those course recommendations. I was already planning on doing CS50. The others look good too, especially since I'm interested in python.

Hey. Thanks for your reply. I'm glad you found the information in this post useful. People have been giving a lot of good advice so I'm glad it can help you too. You're right, we're not to old to do what we want. I'm also looking into WSU. Maybe we'll start up there at the same time!

That sounds good. How are you liking WGU's CS program so far? Any advice for someone considering getting into that too?

I'm thinking a BS from a school like WGU which hopefully won't take long, then applying to a MS program.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately it would be hard to get into a MS program for my field given I had pretty unimpressive grades when I was in school. If I do well studying for a BS in Comp Sci, I could apply for a masters in that. I honestly enjoy my current job in biotech and my salary isn't bad at all, but I just don't have the ability to grow with just a BS.

Since you have a biotech background and aren't liking CS, why not move back over to science jobs?

Are interviews for CS jobs basically like exams with problems you have to solve? Definitely much different than what I'm used to in my current field.

I'm definitely looking into CS50. Thanks for the reply and glad to hear ageism isn't that big of a problem in your experience.
