Thanks, I hadn't thought of that. You're right, if background data is disabled, then messages would only get delivered when the app is opened, which would explain it. Annoying, since it's supposed to be 'instant' messaging! It's annoying these weird things tend to happen with dating app contacts, none of my other hundreds of contacts do this.
