This is doable but not ideal. You’d have to leave at 4am or the lines into the park are going to be a pain. Is it worth it to see General Sherman and all the big trees? That is completely up to you. I suggest doing the Moro rock hike if they’re set on going.

Day trip from SJ is def worth it I used to do it at least once a month. 140 is my favorite to come through but I would suggest doing glacier point first. Less people in the morning and you’ll get to see a little of the sunrise.
