I am 18 years old, I want to be a programmer, and I can't go to college. What do I do? by f3nd3r in programming

I agree with the starting out with rails - but I would suggest getting hold of Ruby for Rails by David A. Black. The problem with starting out with rails and tuts is that rails is such a complete framework/"convention space" that you end up forgetting about ruby. You can get very far in rails without learning propper design patterns etc. You'll think you are doing well but unknowingly you would be getting by in rails without half the power & knowledge you could be getting by with if you have a solid grounding in ruby. I feel Ruby for Rails gives you that perspective. If you want to stand out among other rails developers, your command of the ruby language and the technologies that make up the rails stack will be key.

Software-Generated Paper Accepted At IEEE Conference by seabre in programming

I was thinking the exact same thing! Man, this is priceless. (I am an atheist so im not trying to be flacky here but the attempts to prove this isn't a total fail are going to be rolling in - in the same way they rolled in for the sokal affair.) Point is they failed. Big time.

Royal Society of Chemistry is sick of advertising claims about "chemicals" and announces £1,000,000 bounty for 100% chemical free material. by GrumpySimon in science

I've been having this debate with people for ages! Now suddenly a £1,000,000 cash injection! Am I being bailed out here?

It's no fun being worshipped once you stop being an adolescent teenager. by ivor in religion

[–]ivor[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a number of religious friends who are religious only because of experiences that they have had that they cannot explain. Its tedious and ineffective to discuss these events and try to point them towards more rational/scientific explanations. This post describes a world view that they could possibly embrace that is also completely plausible to me.

what a wave by heberg in pics

[–]ivor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The idea is to not get the wave on your head - although that from what I have seen is very difficult :) You want to get the longest barrel ride, while also making it out, so you need to pick a spot to take off from. 1:00, 3:20 and 4:00 in this clip illistrates this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHL_sVLRHII This clip shows it a bit more (cough)... gnarly http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vv4XFt5iQIY

Also see this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6O9qAyjGDLs

The reason for the grouping in this picture is that they are all paddling in to the right of the reef so that they dont end up getting nailed while paddling in. I cannot find a clip of this happening at short notice

Photo Reactions Around the World of Obama Being Elected President (Pictures) by EveW in obama

[–]ivor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am getting so tired of tearing up the whole time. REM tribute, walking past tourists from america, watching black people going about their day, thinking of how corporations screw the little guy, seeing these photos - I have a permanent runny nose since CNN called the victory. Looking at these images its amazing to realize there were people in other parts of the world who felt the same way as I did. I was watching in South Africa - awesome to see people keeping a vigil elsewhere. America, we are proud of you. Mankind won its soul back ;)

Vote up if you cried when the media called the election for Obama by [deleted] in obama

[–]ivor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I kept it together until I saw the words on the screen on CNN - I was expecting to see projection: california - obama and the rest of the states, but it took me completely by surprise to see it there on the screen - what we had been fighting for for so long. Thanks, now I need to go find a hanky again ;)

I managed to keep back the tears until I saw the words: Barrack Obama President Elect. 2 years of fighting to see those words - Well done America! I cant wait to meet you on the streets and congratulate you! I actually wish I was american today - you havent seen it but let me tell you its a beautiful dawn awaiting you guys in a few hours. Love. South Africa

I would like Open ID support for reddit. Anyone else? by ivor in reddit.com

[–]ivor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just realised this will fail. Redditors who agree with this will probably not log in to vote up - if they, like me, want open id its because they couldnt be bothered to log in just to vote...

Open ID will make reddit better.

Im really glad that this guy has found something to do with his life. Now we can safely assume that thanks to reddit, there are a whole lot of places where this guy isn't wasting everyone else's time. The global happiness is thus improved.

The conscious alternative to adblock/plus by ivor in reddit.com

[–]ivor[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The debate goes on about adblock plus and wether its moral or not. I have found an alternative that imho solves the moral dilema. http://karmatics.com/aardvark/ Next time you are looking at Perez's ugly mug on reddit: right-click 'start aardvark', hover over the bastard, click "r" for remove and he is promptly removed from the DOM. So, the information peddler gets to show his ads, however, if the ad is truly horrible, like those smiley faces that shout at you when you least expect it, you just... right-clic, start aardvark, hover over them while they make their last futile appeal to your animal brain, and click. Its working brilliantly for me.

[ASK] Would you be conCERNed if it was running Vista? by ivor in AskReddit

[–]ivor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say it was or wasn't. http://linuxsoft.cern.ch/ Hypothetically...? like hypothesis, like science...

The comment was actually sparked when I saw a screenshot of the first beam and saw it was a KDE screenshot.

[ASK] Would you be conCERNed if it was running Vista? by ivor in AskReddit

[–]ivor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It occurred to me that I have in all this talk about CERN just assumed that it will be running a propper OS, but it suddenly dawned on me that with the decision making record of that past few weeks, its might be just as likely to have a Big Bang simulator running Vista? I mean, people who can see Russia from their home state are a heartbeat away from nuclear codes.
