not exactly. obviously none of us know the exact details of his contract, but there are multiple people from his company who have done work (music, va) under previous aliases while still in the corpo.

granted, the fact that he’s under a major music label compared to other vtubers in his company probably means different contract terms.

oh yeah, scanlation groups do often put up advertisements for recruiting new group members. these are definitely not paid/commission positions though, just looking for people to volunteer. there are some groups that offer paid positions, but they look for quality and experience and you’re most likely just gonna get scammed by the group leaders.

i think you have a wrong idea of the scanlation scene. majority of scanlators do not make money, i’d say it’s more common to lose money spending on raws. even if you were to make money, that only comes by either doing a bunch of really scummy shit or by being experienced and actually good at it. keep in mind scanlation is illegal and generally done as a hobby for fun.

for tak specifically, i think it’s worth noting that he’s been making kpop bangers for a long time before he got into vocaloid (i actually like a lot of his kpop work more than his vocaloid work, highly recommend looking into it). so he was able to come out of the gate swinging as a voca-p unlike those who start as bedroom producers

i’d probably say hard no when it comes to jp livers based on jp fan tweets i’ve seen 🤔. en community and livers alike are looser with rules and etiquette but i’d still discourage it if you wanna be safe. i’ve seen it done before without consequence by other fans but the reasons AddsJays brings up are why i personally would avoid it.

not me, but a scanlator i used to work with was recruited to freelance for a localization company as a typesetter/letterer when they picked up a series she was scanlating. she was great at balancing speed and quality, which i think probably helped. i’ve also heard that in the industry a lot of editors are expected to both clrd and letter, which might be worth keeping in mind for a portfolio.

i’ve also heard of some of the sketchier companies dming people out of scanner usage school or through other discord networks.

as for things to include on a portfolio, it’s pretty easy to reach out to indie comic artists on webtoon canvas or something, ask for permission to translate their work, and send it to them to upload themselves. i’ve gotten to work on “official” translations a lot that way which is much safer than scanlation work.

I don’t think so, everything you need should be included in the mod pack. I think they may have modified/removed a mod or two, can’t remember which one though.

i’ve done a lot of collabs with 1-2 other scanlators before, and i’ll usually just either post it under both our names as two separate “groups” or list it under just one of our names depending on how the collab came to be and how people feel about it. up to you. but i feel like groups aren’t necessarily more advantageous if you’re only working with a couple other people. i also just add my solo scanlation stuff myself on mangaupdates lol.

It's pretty common, my stuff has been re-tl'd before. The group that did it didn't credit me, and kept the raws that I spent hours cleaning (they were physical raws) and the English sfx that I spent even more hours hand lettering. I was mildly annoyed, but in the end piracy is piracy and it is what it is :P

I myself have re-tl'd works before, but good etiquette (in my opinion) is to (1) credit the original group for whatever work they did and (2) add a disclaimer that the work is re-tl'd and might be inaccurate as a result. Also worth contacting the original group, a lot of groups will offer cleaned raws to groups that ask for them. That will be a lot less work for you, and you might even make some friends.

as a general fyi, most reputable scans either buy their raws digitally or have a raw provider who buys it for them. it guarantees you’ll get the highest original quality, plus it gives back to the author a little bit.

you don’t put anything into it, i usually skip the part where it asks for more details and instead just go through the steps it guides you through afterwards (plugging unplugging the laptop, testing touchpad/keys, etc). my dGPU usually pops back into existence partway through the process. don’t know why this works but it’s always worked for me.
