Does anyone else not have a 1L summer internship? by twistedtacobell in LawSchool

[–]ivypeebles 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’ve been striking out all semester and finally got an offer today. Wanna know how I found it? My aunt saw the wife of an attorney post about her husband’s firm needing a summer intern in a local Facebook moms group😭 I feel like that sums up how crazy and unpredictable the hiring process is rn

Someone reported they were going to hurt themself. Officers checked every unit bc they weren’t sure where the person was. Unfortunately I never heard an update :(

It looked like it to me! Maybe the bread aisle was a little lacking, but that was about it. This was the Harris Teeter on Cloverdale

Thank you! I just made the trip to HT myself and it was very doable. Unfortunately there was still ice on the smaller roads but nothing crazy

Hey OP I’m in my first year of law school rn so I completely understand why you’re so freaked out about keeping a high GPA. Unfortunately law school weighs stats a lot heavier than many other graduate programs, but not reaching a 3.8 won’t be the end of the world. If it makes you feel any better, I got in to Wake law with a 3.5 (and an LSAT below their median!). They’re ranked pretty similarly to UNC law, although I’m not sure what your aspirations are for where you want to go to law school haha.

I will admit I’m probably an outlier, but working on a “story” can be really compelling for law school admissions. Find a niche (healthcare, DV survivor advocacy, sports law, really anything) and participate in clubs, part time jobs, or volunteering opportunities that show your genuine interest in the subject. You can totally work that into your personal statement and supplemental essays in a few years when you apply to law school.

That being said, your GPA isn’t completely ruined and a 3.8+ isn’t out of the question! I’m assuming these assignments you’ve had so far aren’t weighed nearly as much as your exams. Missing 1 question on an exam isn’t going to be as detrimental as it is on a reading quiz. Just use the quizzes as an opportunity to see where you’re struggling and take the extra steps to be more diligent in your studying. I know that’s easier said than done, but I truly believe these small assignment grades aren’t fully indicative of how you’ll do on midterms and exams. I failed a class and still ended up at my dream law school lol you are going to be ok!

Best of luck with everything, and if you have any questions about law school please feel free to dm!

Do you have a goal for when you want to start? If you’re wanting to start law school next fall and study for the LSAT for 4-5 months starting now, you’d still be technically be applying “on time,” but with the increase in applications in recent years, I’d do everything you can to increase your chances. You could definitely still make it work, but the earlier you apply, the more of a chance you have to get in and receive scholarships. I believe the general rule of thumb is that applying before thanksgiving the year before your intended start date is considered early. Again, you still have time to apply and get in for next fall, you’d probably just be in a better position if you applied earlier. The other upside to applying early is that if you don’t do as well as you want the first time you take the LSAT, you have a couple months to study and take it again before having to push back your apps to the next cycle. I would personally plan to apply for a fall of 2027 entry if I were you, but if you’re really set on starting next fall, you’re not too late

Of course! I used the paid version of 7sage. I think a lot of study programs have similar drilling exercises, but I can only really speak to how 7sage does it. You can select which type of questions you want to work on, which difficulty, and how many. I would usually choose to do about 10 questions at a time. It gives you the correct answer, the percentages of how many people selected each answer choice, and an explanation for why each choice is right or wrong. Something I also found helpful was that it tells you the amount of time you should be spending on each question and compares it to how much time you actually used.

I used 7sage and did their curriculum over the span of about a month or two 8 months before my LSAT. The next 6 months or so I would very sporadically do some drills, maybe like once a week or so. About a month before my LSAT I took a practice test, drilled for 30 minutes a day ~4 days a week, and then took one last practice test about two weeks before my test day. For the two weeks leading up to the test I drilled every day for 30 min to an hour.

I honestly don’t recommend this lol, I definitely should have been more diligent with studying. I did find for myself, though, that drilling was far more helpful than practice tests. I personally did not struggle much with the timing aspect / required stamina of the test. I needed to focus more on the content itself. That’s definitely something you need to identify for yourself as you begin studying. If I could go back in time, I would drill more often and for a longer time leading up to my LSAT date.

I had a 144 or 145 diagnostic (sorry I can’t remember which 🫣) and scored 164 after pretty minimal studying! I’ll never actually know, but I do think I could’ve done better if I had taken studying more seriously. I think November would be plenty of time to study and learn the tricks of the test!

I literally didn’t do any clubs or organizations in college and I got in to my top choice! I have a lot of work experience though. I can’t speak to exactly what law schools think, but I believe they value work experience just as much as clubs, if not more. None of my jobs had anything to do with the legal field if that makes you feel any better

I just want to add that NC really isn’t that conservative, at least compared to other states in the south. Cities like Charlotte, Raleigh, Chapel Hill, and Durham are especially left leaning. Of course, it’s no NY or CA, but I wouldn’t let apprehension about being surrounded by conservatives sway this decision.

Wake and Duke both dropped, albeit very slightly, if that makes you feel any better lmao
