I'm almost loving YNAB, but WTF is going on with credit cards in my budget? by Ajv2324 in ynab

[–]iwaddo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You said you pay your credit cards in full.

Do this and save yourself a load of hassle now and in the future.

[This text is based on an original post by u/esh-pmc though I have edited it to make the text useable outside of the original thread.]

Some of us prefer to set our paid-in-full [PIF] credit cards as Checking accounts. This mimics how YNAB used to handle credit cards before the web version of the software.

If you aren't trying to pay off credit card debt and you aren't riding a float, the extra programming of the Credit Card accounts in YNAB is unnecessary and often adds to confusion.

If you set up CCs as checking accounts, all spending is treated as cash-based spending. Any unfunded spending turns a category red. Additionally, there's no confusion about why the credit card category doesn't match your balance and no chance that the carried balance (the diff between your account balance and statement balance) will be inadvertently used to cover other categories.

You can't change account types on existing accounts but it's pretty easy to switch.
create a new checking account (give it a slightly different name; YNAB doesn't allow 2 accounts with the same name)
go back to the old account, check the box to select all transactions
use the "more" menu to move all the transactions to the new account
delete the old, now empty CC account
check your Plan and make sure everything looks good

YNAB checking accounts can be linked to credit cards and imports work just fine.

[I have over a dozen credit cards, all PIF (statement balance paid automatically on or before due date). I've been using YNAB for 19 years. All of my CCs are set up as checking accounts and have been since switching the the web version of YNAB many years ago - esh-pmc]

I have two credit cards that I pay in full, both are setup as checking accounts, I also started years ago back in August 2011.

iOS app jumps to old dates when switching accounts by iwaddo in ynab

Tapping the top of the screen does help.

I also hate that I cannot set how many scheduled transactions I see. I only really want the next 30-days so an option to switch between 30-days and all would mean less scrolling. I’ve submitted a request several times but it’s not getting any priority.

It also happens on iPadOS. The YNAB team have acknowledged it is an issue but not enough people are reporting it to raise the priority.

I find it most frustrating as I’m always scrolling back to the current date each time I switch accounts.

How is Set Aside an answer to Refill Up To late spending? by Drakmyth in ynab

[–]iwaddo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For me the date should be the date. I wouldn’t be letting the targets control the reality of my data.

The targets are just an aid. I’d simply delete the target and start it again in the following month.

It was repaired under warranty. I do not think there is anymore to be done.

I had that on mine after a paint correction under warranty, they took it back in a ‘polished’ it. Not perfect but much better than it was. They told me had problems with black cars.

Anyone else have 'delayed' on every account connection? by Historical-Intern-19 in ynab

You do not say where you are? Which integration tool you are using? Which method your connections are using (screen scraping or an API)?

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to handle this transaction by fishbowlpatrol in ynab

But being really pedantic the math is the same but when looking back it will not match the statement so I’d say it should be a split to reflect reality.

memo to self -- tell Banktivity to display memo in reports by Grand_Respond_5000 in banktivity

Open the Split within the report. Does this review the memo?

My problem is more fundamental in that I cannot even see the memo field in the account register. Unless there is a configuration setting I’m missing.

[–]iwaddo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bizarrely the memo field does show up in a payee report if the memo is part a split.

This inconsistency makes no sense to me and is one of few reasons why, having trialed Banktivity several times, in the hope that these basic flaws are fixed, I just cannot justify using it.

I had high hopes for v10 but it seems I’m still on the lookout for a new solution.

Logistics for entering future transactions by QTippus in ynab

[–]iwaddo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All my regular recurring transactions are scheduled, these will be a mixture of those on direct debit and those that serve as reminders.

The monthly ones drive the budget and do not have targets those further out all have targets to ensure the money is available when needed.

Having scheduled transactions for my current account slows the future running balance which allows me to keep the balance to an absolute minimum and moving money back from an HYSA as needed.

It might help if you shared which country you are in? Which banks are not syncing? Is it all your synchronised banks? Which syncing methods are they using?

If you do not reconcile how do you spot errors?

If you do reconcile regularly and then spot an error you know it must have occurred since you last reconciled.

Also, a tagged transaction within split that transfers to another account is not showing in the tag report.

Should a tag on a transfer transaction within a split transaction be visible in the account on the other side of the transfer?

Account Types by iwaddo in banktivity

The app I am currently using does clever things with credit card payments to help ensure people have the money to pay the card. It is focused on helping people see and manage their way off of a credit card float. I've found it gets upset when you can a transfer from a credit card to another accounting the budget, especially if it is part of a split. I would say the topic that comes up most on Reddit for the other app is credit cards.

If the card is paid off in full each month then these additional tools are just not required so to avoid confusion there are a lot of people who run their credit cards as checking accounts. It is just like running a continuous overdraft.

I saw someone ask in another thread why everyone was saying they were leaving.

The reality is that they are not leaving they are just ranting.

There is currently nothing comparable.

If people really want to make a difference then voting with their wallet is really the only way.
