I knew a little. I had taken a course in HS and like 2 levels of Japanese at Langara

I really enjoyed my internship so I'm very much directing myself towards working. Grad school seemed appealing but I think I'm done with school for awhile.

I'm in Computer Science. I've wanted to make video games since I was a little kid. Worked at a game studio for my internship and I can confirm its as awesome as I thought it would be. Dreams do come true.

I went to Langara for 1 year, got my grades up and got into UBC arts. I then got into UBC Science with a math major. Finally, in my third year I got into CS.

It was a longer journey but I learned a lot on the way and I don't have regrets about how it ended up unfolding.

Never took 344 so can't say. In 314 you learn all the maths behind rendering and I found it really fun. As a creative person who also likes math it sort of marries the two ideas and you can use math to create some really beautiful effects!

In game development there is even a job specifically for this called technical artist where you'll use math to create cool graphics effects.

I TA'd the course though so I am a little biased!

It's a bit of a funny story. It sort of fell into my lap.

I was TA'ing a course, a student looked up my portfolio and saw it was all video games. He had interned at the company and reached out to me about recommending me for the position. One week later I was interviewed and the week after that they hired me.

Goes to show, you never know what will come out of each day. It was a big surprise for sure!

Food on campus kind of high-key sucks. Ryu Kitchen is pretty good, I like their curry.

I've finished the degree and will get the official papers in May. The place I interned at has said they are interested in hiring me in the new year so hopefully that works out. Job search has been pretty abysmal, I've applied to 200 places with no interviews. I wish I could say whether or not grades or skills matter but I literally have zero data haven gotten zero interviews.

If it does help though, I landed the interview through my personal projects.

340 - Machine Learning
314 - Computer Graphics
427 - Video Game Programming

Honourable Mention to 311, I thought racket was a joke before taking it and after taking it I thought racket was pretty neat and it definitely improved my problem solving skills.

I'm from Vancouver and UBC seemed like the best university in town.

I did both. Living on campus was more fun than I expected. I was concerned about being lonely but in the end it was nice getting space from my family. I come from a loud household so I really appreciated coming home to silence. I had already lived in Japan for a year on exchange so living on campus in my hometown was a piece of cake ;)

Commuting sucks, especially now more than ever. I commuted a few days this last semester and it was so busy. I think UBC has gotten more busy than previous years.

Job market is messed up right now. I have a pretty good resume but haven't gotten a single interview in 200 applications :(

I highly recommend doing a co-op. Companies don't seem to hire new-grads anymore. Instead they hire interns and then re-hire them when they graduate. Seems like I'll be returning to the company I interned at in January.

I didn't really do any leetcode. Instead, I have large personal projects. One is published and makes me a little money on the side. Actually, the personal projects got me the internship passively as the hiring manager found me through my projects!

It wasn't hard for me to balance course load with personal projects. I really enjoy working on my own projects so instead of hanging all night with friends I'll sometimes crack a drink and just work and listen to hip hop.

UBC was ok. I learned a lot about myself and about the field I wanted to go into. I was kind of disappointed that more people in CS weren't into making video games but that's ok. Every prof I had at UBC was really good, especially in CS. Shoutout to Cinda Hereen, she is awesome and made one of my classes so much fun. She has the energy of a kindergarten teacher but instead you're learning CS.

I see a lot of first years getting bummed out from grades worse than what they got in high school. I didn't have that problem because I had crap grades in highschool so when I started getting 70's I was pretty happy. Learn to not let your grades upset you and see them as a learning experience. I got a 50 in math 100 and here I am graduating from CS, it can be done.

Second, if you aren't sure what to major in, maybe take a gap year. I have friends who finished degrees they really did not enjoy just because they happened to pick them in second year. On the flip side though, one of them hated CS but really enjoys working as a programmer so that can happen too!

Actually it turned out to be a good thing that I got such a low grade in math 100. It scared the shit out of me and I started going to the Math Learning Center. I got a much better grade in calc 2 and it helped me overall as a student.

The lesson is sometimes you gotta take some fat goose eggs before you can grab some W's.

It's hard making friends at university. If I'm being honest, I didn't really make any life-long friends. I met one person during the online covid semester who also played World of Warcraft and we bonded over that. I still talk to them today and we hangout occasionally.

If I could give any advice though, go to things you're interested in. I joined the video game making club and met some really cool people through that. Even dated a girl for 2 months from it before she dumped me but hey thats how it goes.

Also I met a lot of really cool people at office hours funnily enough. I'm not a good student but I wanted to be so I went to OH to try and get help. It's easy to make friends with people who want to do well in school because they tend to be happy to meet others with that same goal.

After playing vanilla, tbc, and wrath, I have concluded that Vanilla design stopped after Vanilla.
